Husband earns over 100k. Do we get 15hrs free funding?

Sorry I know a lot of people have asked this but I’m still confused.

My husband earns over 100k. I earn 30k.
our son will be 2 in Jan 2024, so come April 2024, will we receive 15hrs funding from the government? Then, if we are to have another child (not pregnant yet), by the time other child is born, when they start nursery, they too will get 15hrs?

Someone said you get nothing if one earns over 100k, but I thought EVERYONE gets 15??

it’s so irritating if you compare our situation to parents who both earn 90k each. I know we’re fortunate but with my husbands salary comes higher mortgage payments and we live and work in London.

anyway, I hope someone can answer this for me.

thank you so much

You don’t have higher mortgage payments because of your husband’s salary. You have them because this was the mortgage you got. Just saying.

catbla2957 · 09/10/2023 18:36

Can your husband pay extra into his pension to get his overall salary down.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/10/2023 18:36

We both have similar salaries to your husband’s and wouldn’t even try and get free childcare. If you are unsure if you can afford another child, don’t do it.

Exactly 💯

Yep everyone gets it - some choose not to claim it though obviously if they really don't need it

Pottomous2 · 09/10/2023 18:38

I was told if you earn over 100k no free hours for nursery. You get 15 free if you earn up to 100k not over it.

Overthebow · 09/10/2023 18:38

You’d get the 15 hours but from age 3, not 2, so April 2025.

1988really · 09/10/2023 18:38

I really hope you are not someone who complains about low earners claiming UC @!

minipie · 09/10/2023 18:39

The simple answer, without all the judgment, is yes you do.

SarahLKelp · 09/10/2023 18:39

Yes you are entitled to 15 hours free funding per child from the term after they turn three. You can ask your childcare provider for the form to fill in, it's very straightforward.

Ignore the rude posters, you are entitled to your 15 hours per week. It's worth noting that the 15 free hours per week only apply during term time, so they usually average out the "discount" across the 40 term time weeks of the year.

At my daughters nursery most parents were only claiming 15 free hours and everyone did, it would be ridiculous not to!

Dessertinthedesert · 09/10/2023 18:40

The term after he turns 3 he will get 15 free hours of education for 38 weeks of the year. Some private nurseries will stretch this.

3WildOnes · 09/10/2023 18:41

You will get 15hrs from the term after their third birthday. As that is universal and for the purpose if education. You won't get any of the additional funding.
However, if he is literally earning 100k and not substantially more then he can just up his pension contributions to bring him under the threshold.

Weefreetiffany · 09/10/2023 18:41

Seeing as you no longer benefit from a lot of means based tax breaks and therefore paying the equivalent of 60% tax, yes you must claim the on thing you are entitled to- 15 hours free after 3.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/10/2023 18:43

Two different questions here. The one... is it fair that child benefits, childcare access etc is based on just the higher earners income not total family income... then yes. Your friends on 90k don't need it anymore than you do.

CesareBorgia · 09/10/2023 18:43

Be mindful that we might have a change of government next year, when you are planning more than three years ahead.

Not for the two year old funding. They will get 15hrs term time only, funding from April 2025, not 2024.

CowboysAndCowgirls · 09/10/2023 18:45

I'm glad some of the later answers were actually helpful and not from the jealous, nasty brigade that only thinks you should post if you're poor.. What do they sound like? 🤣

My friend is in a similar position and they'll get it from the term after their child turns 3.

renthead · 09/10/2023 18:46

Yes to this- if he earns just above the threshold, then if he increases pension contributions to bring his salary just under 100K, you'll be eligible for the full 30 hours.

Startingagainandagain · 09/10/2023 18:47

Seriously? do you really think the taxpayer should pay for your childcare considering what your joint income is?

QueenofTheSlipstreamVM · 09/10/2023 18:47

You don’t have higher mortgage payments because of your husband’s salary. You have them because this was the mortgage you decided to get.

AutumnWellyBootsandScarf · 09/10/2023 18:48

Just like you have an
opinion on this re parents who both earn £90,000 I have an opinion on your situation

its a piss take, taking the 15 free hours. It's killing nurseries. It's just selfish when you earn enough to pay for it.

you weren't forced to buy a bigger house (thus have a bigger mortgage, you chose & you chose to have a child/children.

take some responsibility for your choices!

Maybe compare yourself to two parents who earn minimum wage and you will be less irritated.
