Salary for a nanny who doesn't cook/clean etc.

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out what the hourly rate would be for this role. I'm a little confused and based on my Google searches, I think I've got it narrowed down to a 10-15/per hour ball park but may be wrong so wanted to check with you all to make sure I am being fair.

Nanny would be part-time live out. 3-5 days per week. 2 hours per day. No cleaning, no cooking, no diaper changing, no feeding. Two children aged under 3 years old. Nanny's role is only to play and communicate with the children in Arabic (the aim is to expose the kids to this language). Read them books, play with them using their toys, some very light arts and crafts.

If 10-15 is about right, or you have a different suggestion, please do let me know. I'd be very appreciative. Thank you!

£15 ph in London would be normal, assuming you mean gross

We could only pay min wage which was £7.50 an hour I think

Assuming the nanny doesn’t have sole care, because either there’s a SAHP or other nanny in the home then £10-15 is fine.

Yes that's exactly the set up. I am a SAHM and will be home the entire time so will tend to nappies, feeding, clean up etc. The "nanny" (or should I call her a babysitter actually?) would only be required to sit in the living room with the kids and play with them and speak to them in Arabic. I'd be on hand the entire time.

Oh wow, that's much lower than what I've found online. I'm located in London so I don't know if that makes a difference.

I think this could be quite a hard role to fill because you only want 2 hrs a day. I think offer £15+ and see what happens.

I think this will be quite tricky, if you are there they will want you. So personally I would pretend to be out , or go out for a walk and the Nanny deals with nappies and food too. Then pay the £15 as 2 hours is a short block. Taking to the kids about food, do you need a drink is perfect for developing language skills and then they know when you are out they speak Arabic.

Thanks for the wise tips. I also speak in Arabic to my children but a different dialect. I plan to hide upstairs and watch Netflix lol! Thank you for the direction on the payment. I'm coming to the conclusion that £15 would be fair.

I think the problem is, @SimplyRadishing, that 2 hours in the day is not attractive to the majority of childcarers. It isn't enough hours to live on and difficult to fit in with another job. Most people want a longer day, so even £15 p/h is not a lot when you think of it in this context.

You don't need a nanny. You need an Arabic speaking babysitter.

My opinion is that the wage you're considering is far too low. Essentially, you appear to want a teacher of languages. If that is the case, you need to be paying £25ph at least. If I were to work 1-2-1 in people's homes outside of my normal day at school, I'd be charging £40 per hour minimum. I assume you'd want someone DBS checked and qualified in EYFS too.

I think £12 would be a great hourly rate.

In my area this job would be minimum wage basically but your in London. £10.00 an hour sounds ok. But itsounds like it may be hard to find someone who would want to do that. Perhaps a semiretired teacher? Somone who works in an after school club?

I completely agree. I am a nanny and work 3.30pm-5.30pm Sun-Fri and earn £15p/h. It is not enough to live on, especially in London, and is incredibly tricky to find other jobs around. I love doing what I do, I wouldn't change jobs any time soon, and the family I nanny for is phenomenal, but the hours and money are sh*t.

This isn’t a babysitter either - this is a tutor who teaches through play. Going rate for this (DC speaks Arabic and Hebrew and have had this reinforced with tutors through play occasionally) is closer to £25ph in London. May be cheaper if you need Levantine Arabic , because finding native tutors will be easier than Khaleeji etc.

I wouldnt call this a babysitter rolle if they need to chat and play with the kids. Babysitters stay in your home while your kids sleep so you go out for a meal etc.
This is a very part time nanny role/ language tutor role. Part time roles are hard to fill as the nanny needs other work to fit around it.

If you are flexible about timings it could be a great job for an Arabic speaking student or actor who lives locally to you and I think they would be happy with £10 or £11 an hour. Pre pandemic we had actor/babysitters before who were really happy to do two or three hours each day and we paid £10/11 an hour, They played with the kids and chatted to them. Like an au pair but not live in. They needed flexibility to fit around another job/auditioning/possible acting jobs but it usually worked well.

Well First of all most nannies are employed by the family so this needs to be taken into
Consideration, you will need to pay her taxes , employer taxes , holiday pay etc etc .

You could find a self employed nanny but 2 hours per day is not appealing to most unless higher hourly rate so for London I would say £20-£25 per hour if the tile is to education languages definitely the higher end ..

A babysitter minds children in the evenings whilst children are asleep generally . X
