Drop of alcohol to help him sleep? What do you use?

I have a 1 year-old who (like many I'm sure) is an absolute nightmare with sleeping. Not often but occasionally I've popped a few small drops of brandy (he seems to quite like the taste(!)) to help him off. It was something my nan used to do to me.

I wondered if this was something others did and which alcohol they tended to use?

Thanks in advance!

Doctors used to recommend smoking as being good for health. Look how that has turned out!!

Soubriquet · 01/09/2016 17:55

I watched it too because you said offensive but I must have missed it. No subtitles

Of course I don't give my kids alcohol! Ridiculous.
I just drink myself into a stupor so at least I get some fucking sleep.

pictish · 01/09/2016 18:06

I agree that alcohol is avoidable.
I'm still not sure why everyone here is shredding the OP though - no one has come forward with anything concrete to justify the self-assured mass kicking the OP has had.

No one knows anything about it.

So you think there's no issues giving alcohol to babies pictish?!

WaitrosePigeon · 01/09/2016 18:12

Thanks for the laugh OP Grin

pictish · 01/09/2016 18:12

Where did I say that?

FairNotFair · 01/09/2016 18:12

Stella. It made them a bit fighty, but they're boys so that's healthy, right? Hmm

HerRoyalFattyness · 01/09/2016 18:14

What would everyone recommend for my 13 month old who had his jabs today? He's obviously going to be quite unsettled so just wondering what would be best to give him.

DropYourSword · 01/09/2016 18:15

Because you keep banging on about how no one can say why it's bad. Except that plenty of people have said why!

Freshprincess · 01/09/2016 18:17

Oh I've had such a shitty day, but this thread has made me genuinely laugh out loud. You lot are hilarious.

Thanks OP for starting it, but seriously, NO.

Many years ago, in Geneva, I remember reading about a couple who really didn't know any better, who had been anointing their young, teething, first baby's gums with brandy at regular intervals to calm him down, and possibly putting it in his bottle, as well. This lasted for about three months, if I remember correctly, until the baby died of alcohol poisoning and the parents were accused of murder, I think. They were from a Mediterranean country and their parents had told them to try it. It's no joke.

rosie1959 · 01/09/2016 18:18

In the 80 s Gripe water had alcohol in it did make the babies sleep !

Queenbean · 01/09/2016 18:19

I wasn't having a go Dixie! Just that I see what you mean!

pictish · 01/09/2016 18:19

My point is not that alcohol is good for babies. My point is that people on mumsnet pile in a for booting, despite not having a clue what they're booting someone for.
