Drop of alcohol to help him sleep? What do you use?

I have a 1 year-old who (like many I'm sure) is an absolute nightmare with sleeping. Not often but occasionally I've popped a few small drops of brandy (he seems to quite like the taste(!)) to help him off. It was something my nan used to do to me.

I wondered if this was something others did and which alcohol they tended to use?

Thanks in advance!

Just give him a space cake, he'll sleep for a week.

Soubriquet · 01/09/2016 16:17

If you have to use alcohol use Pernod.

Then the effects last the next day too

Hmm
Hawkmoth · 01/09/2016 16:18

Babycham. The clue is in the name?!?

MimsyBorogroves · 01/09/2016 16:19

I'm a bit retro and use laudanum.

The deleted message suggested the op could possibly dwell under a bridge.

Penfold007 · 01/09/2016 16:20

I presume you are trying to be funny. However, you do know it's illegal to give a child under five alcohol?

FoxSticks · 01/09/2016 16:21

Gin and tonic, the tonic is medicinal innit?

Out2pasture · 01/09/2016 16:22

IzzyIsBusy · 01/09/2016 16:23

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/09/2016 16:23

Beer bottle with a Jäger chaser.

bloodyteenagers · 01/09/2016 16:23

Well lack of sleep is a medical emergency, no?
That's also assuming everyone is in the UK. Could be in Moldova, no age.

Artandco · 01/09/2016 16:24

Pen - is that true? So it's illegal for me to give my 5 year old alcohol, but I can allow my 6 year old to raid the alcohol cupboard?

MagnumAddict · 01/09/2016 16:25

imyourmama calpol has no sedative in it so please stop using this as a method to get your child to sleep. It would only work if your child is in pain and that's the reason they can't sleep. So yes the pearl clutchers are out and pointing at you too.

As for the alcohol. Just no, fucking hell, no. I hope this is a joke but sadly I know there are people who actually think this is acceptable.

Martha91 · 01/09/2016 16:25

Wow! Some 'interesting' comments on here haha. I wasn't actually joking – my nan used to give me a drop every now and then before bed (apparently), and it's something I thought a fair few people did?! Thought I'd ask to see if/what people suggested. I gave him a tiny drop of gin once but he wasn't nearly as keen.

Absinthe works a treat.

JennyOnAPlate · 01/09/2016 16:26

Pass him a flaming sambuca. That's what I do.

Soubriquet · 01/09/2016 16:26

It used to be advocated years ago but it certainly isn't recommended now. Won't do him any good

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 01/09/2016 16:27

How long before the Fail or Twatthew Wright pick up this thread?

Amalfimamma · 01/09/2016 16:27

Pepsi flavoured Poteen

Buy it special when in donegal 🙄

SandunesAndRainclouds · 01/09/2016 16:27

Ah, those that no longer buy medised resorted to the hard stuff....

NerrSnerr · 01/09/2016 16:27

Well, my first thought is there is no way my child is getting their hands on my gin.

If you are serious then in the UK it is illegal to give a baby alcohol. I can't imagine a baby's liver is great at processing any amount of spirits. I have a child who is a terrible sleeper, but I don't think giving drugs is the answer.

TodaysAGoodDay · 01/09/2016 16:28

Diazepam if I haven't used it all on myself first or just go for a walk to the park, I can't hear them crying from there.
