How did your waters go?

Twice now I've had them ruptured by that hook and IIRC it really bloody hurt. If they've never gone naturally before, shall I assume that they won't this time either?

In a big, massive, Niagra type rush.

LittleB · 06/11/2009 19:31

I just noticed a bit of dampness, went into hospital and they had started to leak, so I kept having to take my temperature to check for infection. Was induced 2 days later, and they did break the rest of my waters when I wsn't progressing fast enough which did hurt and sent me into transition - so I guess it worked!

cyteen · 06/11/2009 19:38

I've only had one birth so far, but they went in a big gush. DS was going mad wriggling for about 20 minutes and then POP, all over the leatherette swivel chair

Took another 30 hours or so for labour to start though.

Disenchanted3 · 06/11/2009 19:41

DS1- No idea, must have gone in the pool as I felt nothing,

DS2 - they didn't he was born membranes intact into the birthpool water and he came out of the sack in the pool.

DD - they didn't break again but this time I was on dry land and pushed anintact placenta out which promtly exploded whilst half way out of me and soaked everything!!

ThePhantomPlotter · 06/11/2009 19:41

I want mine to go naturally this time.

dd1 - no idea, arrived at hospital to find waters already broken, no idea when or where. mw suggested they may have gone in th eshower or on the loo and i just didn't notice

dd2 - mw stuck a crochet hook up me chuff. didn't hurt but dd2 had scratches on the top of her head when she was born

bibbitybobbityhat · 06/11/2009 19:43

Leaked for 5 days, starting at 39+5. Induction, crash c/s, baby in scbu, a week of iv antiobiotics for dd, had to remain in hospital. Hospital nearly sued by me and dh because we had been in there twice before they finally agreed with me that my waters were leaking and agreed to induce. My case brought about a review of the hospital policy on checking patients who report slightly leaking waters.

titferbrains · 06/11/2009 19:47

Broken by one fo those hook things by a nurse as I was induced. Don't remember any pain but I do remember the "checks" to see how dilated I was being hideous - nurse assured that she was being gentle and then told me that if I couldn't handle that then

wasabipeanut · 06/11/2009 19:49

I had a SROM, (slow rupture of membranes for those who may not know). Was induced by synto drip 48 hours later when nothing was happening - not sure why they didn't break my waters properly or give me a pessary as my Bishops score was as low as possible.

Perhaps this contributed to the failed induction and eventual emergency cs?

I have given up wondering.

3 times, natural "breakage" - I felt a sort of "oomph" deep in there IYKWIM? and then a rush of fluid all over the bed. By the second time, I was prepared and when I felt the oomph, I jumped out of bed and grabbed the towel that I had left there for that purpose, stuffed it between my legs and therefore saved the mattress! I cannot believe that I could move that quickly at 40 weeks .
During one labour I did have the hook thing, but I had polyhydramnios and the baby was floating around like an astronaut. My major concern was that I would have to have a C/S so maybe I didn't really notice the ARM? Happily, he was delivered just fine, naturally, even though it was in theatre as a precaution - not a nice place to deliver.
Last labour - waters went and I didn't even notice - just thought I had stress incontinence .

thisisyesterday · 06/11/2009 19:53

had mine broken the first 2 times
third time they went by themselves, but only a couple of contractions before he was born

fruitshootsandheaves · 06/11/2009 19:53

I have 4 DC's and I can't remember my waters breaking with any of the births.
Bit disappointed as i wanted to hang around M&S or Waitrose in the hope of a dramatic TV style gush and a lovely hamper.

facebookaddict · 06/11/2009 20:09

First time went 6hrs before birth. First sign of labour. Tiny bit, wasn't sure but bit more over ten mins and realised. Hardly even wet. Went to hosp still no pain, then all went quick.

Second time went 3 days before induced birth. LOADS which continued to be LOADS for full 3 days. Literally niagra falls, many changes of clothing. Irony, after 12 hours no progress induction on drip, midwife realised forewaters intact (god knows what waters had been broken!) and broke remaining waters with hook. Needless to say 40 mins of established labour and 2 push delivery ensued.

Hook doesn't hurt, didn't harm baby at all. Not nice being examined in labour but by then you want the quickest exit strategy so anything goes.

facebookaddict · 06/11/2009 20:09

Sorry, should have said 'hook didn't hurt me' rather than contradict that it has hurt you..

bluebump · 06/11/2009 20:12

I got up in the night for a wee and as I stood up to flush the loo I thought "what is that odd sensation" and all of a sudden there was a small gush of waters. That was fine, the next lot went in a bigger gush in Tesco the next day! Good job I had black trousers on as I scuttled out at an alarming speed back to the car! The midwife still managed to break even more waters when I was in labour, there must have been loads of it.

sazlocks · 06/11/2009 20:15

A few hours after having a show I felt a small period like pain and stood up and they went. It was a small gush and then a slow leak for a few days till I got admitted into hosp and then induced. I was around 37 weeks.

PoppyIsApain · 06/11/2009 20:18

Mine leaked all day from 1am till 8pm, my ds was born at 20.20.

alwayslookingforanswers · 06/11/2009 20:20

DS1 - niagara falls

DS2 - trickle every time I moved my pevlis (was interesting playing the organ trying not to move my hips/pelvis in case I leaked more

DS3 - not sure was actually in labour when they went - I was sat on a birthing ball and said "oh I think my waters have gone" - MW and Doula looked around me and said "no doesn't look like it"

A little while later I wanted to get onto the bed.........stood up and everyone ended up in a puddle of water - I was sat in a pool of them in the "dent" on the ball and when I stood up the ball went back into shape and spilled the lot over the floor

Crocky · 06/11/2009 20:20

Both times my waters went soon after I got into bed. I heard a pop, somehow guessed what the noise was and jumped up and ran to the toilet. Got there just in time.
Weird how both times started exactly the same. Went quite differently from then on though.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 06/11/2009 20:20

crochet hook thing first time
2nd time was spectacular, I was in the pool labour progressing really fast (5cm-out in 1 hour) and they burst in the birthing pool, I heard the pop and felt a huge pressure I burst into tears and screamed that I had been shot it took dh and the midwife to calm me down.

YanknCock · 06/11/2009 20:23

I THOUGHT they'd gone on Saturday noon outside the library, when I felt a big gush, but went to hospital and they said they couldn't see any sign that they'd gone and I wasn't dilating. However, my contractions started 6 hours later so I'm not convinced I wasn't leaking a bit.

Then on Monday 2am I was in hospital, MW went to examine me and said 'oh your waters have gone!' as a big gush soaked the bed (I think she accidentally or purposely popped them with her finger). Later on that morning someone was trying to attach an electrode to DS's scalp, and my hindwaters exploded all over a registrar and midwife! I could hear water running all over the floor, seriously sounded like someone had kicked a mop bucket over. Everyone was running to get towels and the poor registar's scrubs were soaked, as were the MW's tights.

I won't be mistaking those small gushes for the real thing second time around, that's for sure.

doobry · 06/11/2009 20:27

#1 with a loud twang and a gush in the bath (handy) and #2 with a big gush in the car on the way to hospital!

wilkos · 06/11/2009 20:33

started contracting at home and it was getting painful so went into hospital, where they informed me I was only 1cm dilated

As it was 1 am kindly midwife gave me the option of going back home with dh or staying on the ward for the night

I chose to stay on the ward with a couple of other pregnant snoring women, 20 minutes later I turned over and had that "oomph" (very good way of putting it plasticbandit!) and waters went in a big gush

kindly midwife came back in and said "well done!", bless her. after that contractions got much more intense but dd wasnt delivered until 14 hours later. might have been slowed down by the epidural I ended up having though

daisyj · 06/11/2009 20:33

Membrane ruptured with hook thingy at 9cm. Didn't hurt, felt quite nice - maybe it hurts more if done earlier on. Don't know why I kind of assume mine won't break naturally next time either (was thinking about this yesterday for some unknown reason, as not even pg).

Grendle · 06/11/2009 20:42

DC1 -small pop and little gush at 5cm dilated following pessary induction. No-one believed me. There was very very little water fullstop, but then that was known in advance.

DC2 -massive pop in the birth pool just as I started involuntarily pushing. The gush was immediately followed by a head descending and crowning . Apparently this is classic.
