How did your waters go?

Twice now I've had them ruptured by that hook and IIRC it really bloody hurt. If they've never gone naturally before, shall I assume that they won't this time either?

Ds1 laid on my side on the bed, mw stood behind me, felt lots of pressure and then relief. Heard 'oh shit' 'oh sorry' then lots of laughing.
My waters had gone with huge force and completely soaked the poor mw!!
The student mw was doubled over laughing, my dh was hugely relieved as he was stood the other side of me and the poor mw had to go borrow some theatre scrubs and paper knickers!
No mw wanted to come near me for ds2 after they read my notes for ds1!
They did it again the second time, but i was in the bath, nearly caused a tidal wave!

WowOoo · 06/11/2009 20:51

I'm sure mine went as a result of attempting to give myself a pedicure.

Felt no pop. Just loads of water.

Midwife on phone dared to ask me if i was sure I hadn't wet myself a bit.
No human bladder could hold that amount of water!!

Tinkerisdead · 06/11/2009 20:53

My waters were a bit of a mystery, initially I swear I had a leak and no-one believed me as pad was dry for days after. Went to hospital in established labour after 20 hours and midwife said there was a hole in my membranes and had i had them broken?

Me face in pillow with half effective epidural mumbling to my indpendant midwife, i told you i had a leak!

Then I was dozing and felt what seemed like a huge bucket of warm water pour down my legs. Me, face in pillow mumbles "waters just broke on my leg" everyone lifts covers and agrees and think how strange as she had such a large hole in membranes!

later I told them that they had broken again!!??? But the midwife informed me that the baby had poo'ed out of my vagina. The joys of birth!!!

Just drifting back to sleep at 0140 when I was 41 weeks. Felt a pop-glug-glug-glug sensation and leapt out of bed (well, as near as I could get to leaping at that size) and just made it to the loo.

Then came downstairs and looked at old Mumsnet threads - the consensus seemed to be I'd be in labour in a couple of hours.

Went back to bed - called the birthing unit in the morning (still no pain) and they told me I should have been in hours ago - went in and they said my cervix was closed, was I sure it was waters - much waiting and testing later they agreed it was.

10pm that night contractions finally started - and DD was born 28 and a half hours later. Only 13 of those were "official" hours though (which I always think is a bit of a con, no-one tells you you'll go through labour for bloody ages but they won't start the clock for hours)

IckleJess · 06/11/2009 21:04

1st labour I was at home on soaf and felt a pop, ran to toilet just in time as waters gushed out like a waterfall.

2nd labour, waters went just before I started to push - it kind of marked entering the transition stage for me. Again, gushed everywhere, all over hospital bed lol.

3rd labour, had woken in night with what I thought were contractions. Tried to time them but couldn't keep awake properly so said to DH that I obviously wasn't in labour and that I was going back to sleep. Shuffled back down into lying position and felt that pop again - knew that if I stood up it would be disasterous so shouted at DH to get a towel which I thin wedged between my legs and hobbled off to the bathroom and stood in the bath! Luckily this time they were more of a slow trickle that continued all through my labour. Mind you, DD was born within 2hrs of my waters breaking, at home

FlyMeToDunoon · 06/11/2009 21:24

DD1 broken with crochet hook thing and was painless, although I have heard many others say it was agony for them.
DD2 eh dunno when they went. Had epidural so may not have noticed.
DD3 went to loo and peed and thought gosh thats going on a long time..... until I realised.
Slow trickles for two days following that.

hairtwiddler · 06/11/2009 21:38

When first examined in hospital, at 10cm dilated, all over the doctor!

BalloonSlayer · 06/11/2009 21:49

Got up for the nth time that night at 41+4 to go to the loo.

Settled down back to sleep, then felt, rather than heard, a sort of pop (when you squeeze a spot and it pops you don't hear a pop, but you sort of feel it?) and loads of uncontrollable water went everywhere.

Had first contraction soon after. Had to get carted to hosptal straight away as head still not engaged (LHA rule).

Midwife said "are you sure it was not urine?"

I said, "Erm, well, yes, pretty sure - I had just had a wee" instead of what I wanted to say, which was: "Well Yes, as - and I'd thought you'd have known this being a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL - urine comes from the ur-e-thra, and amniotic fluid comes from the vag-i-na. OK??"

AnyFuleKno · 06/11/2009 22:17

like crocky, broke when getting back into bed (after umpteenth night time wee). I knew what it was straight away. Went straight into labour.

pointydogg · 06/11/2009 22:22

Ruptured for me the first time.

Broke naturally at the very last minute (well, 20 mins perhaps) before dd2 was born.

I have very very strong membranes, natch

pointydogg · 06/11/2009 22:23

phantom, why were yours ruptured twice?

DingALongCow · 06/11/2009 22:24

Both times I just felt a pop and had a tiny trickle, less than half a cup full and that was it for 17/19 hours. With DD I have no idea when the rest came out, possibly in the bath. With DS they didnt pop until I started pushing, just a feeling of release and then a gush down my legs. DS born 3 minutes later.

LoveBeingAMummy · 06/11/2009 22:26

Heard a pop whilst lifting my leg up to turn on the hot tap in the bath, and then when i was getting dressed whoosh.

madamefreckle · 06/11/2009 22:27

Had contractions for 30 hours before waters broke quite explosively in hospital - baby still didn't arrive for another 4 hours though.

Wheelybug · 06/11/2009 22:29

DD1 - with crochet hook during induction(didn't help, ended in emcs)

DD2 - at 39+4 in my kitchen after my 3rd session of reflexology, wierd sensation but a gush. Stood in and phoned dh 'um I think my waters have gone, but i may have wet myself'. DIdn't help either - didn't go into labour and ended up with a semi-elective c-sec 2 days later.

Meglet · 06/11/2009 22:32

I had the crochet hook after 10 hefty hours of labour, didn't hurt though, but ended in em cs not long afterwards. I remember being suprised at how much water gushed out.

TaLcSfromTheCrypt3 · 06/11/2009 22:42

DD1 after 24 hours of labour, lots of meconium, emergency forceps. Attended mat ward two days earlier thinking waters had broken but had wet myself.

DD2 emergency cs

ThePhantomPlotter · 07/11/2009 10:24

Pointy - Not entirely sure, first labour was long and horrendous, midwife said it would bring it on a bit. Second labour was lovely, didn't want any intervention but I saw her head down there and she came up with her hook and told me she'd broken my waters.

PlumBumMum · 07/11/2009 10:28

Mine went naturally the 3rd time I was soo pleased,
standing in admissions (already having contraction every min,
just felt something warm running down my leg and said oops I think I've wet myself, hmm maybe not,
Midwife said well which do you think

dh, mw, and I staring at floor, waters

fingers crossed for you plopper

pointydogg · 07/11/2009 10:38

You should tell your midwife that you don't want your waters broken unless there is a good reason for doing so.

With dd1, they broke my waters because the labour was dragging on and had slowed down considerably so I agreed to it, to see if things would speed up.

I don't think there's any need to do it, though, if the labour is progresing and you are feeling happy. I'm sure I cn't be the only one whose waters only break when birth is imminent.

Please ask!

sammummy2007 · 07/11/2009 10:41

For DS1, 13 hours into an 18 hour labour, in a huge gush just as the MW was examining me. She got soaked from head to toe - DH was delighted as she'd just really P*d me off by saying that she hated "doing first time births" because they took too long. Can still picture DH mopping gallons of amniotic fluid up from the floor, still shaking with laughter.

For DS2, another big gush followed by a wonderful midwife saying that she could see the head. DS was born 3 minutes later. Big surprise as I'd thought I had hours to go! I'd felt the urge to push before the waters broke but thought I was imagining it.

dawntigga · 07/11/2009 10:46

5 weeks early when I coughed quite hard - it was a tiny bit of shock.

sammummy2007 · 07/11/2009 10:51

I should have added that my second labour was wonderful and relatively pain free. The midwife thought this was in large measure because my waters stayed intact for so long. If you and the baby are okay, then, if I were you, I would refuse to allow anyone to intervene and break your waters.

After all, it is possible, although rare, for a baby to be born in an intact sac without the waters having been broken at all - it's considered very lucky in many cultures. Your waters almost certainly will break eventually, but maybe, like me, not until the very last stages.

funtimewincies · 08/11/2009 20:30

I'd been induced in hospital with a pessary. Things had kicked off nicely and dh was advised not to go home. It was night-time so we snuggled up together to try and get some kip, although the contractions were quite serious by this stage.

Suddenly there was an audible pop and I leapt off the bed (giving myself a HUGE bruise on my thigh) and my waters went all over the floor.

The MW wasn't impressed, muttering about having to clear it up. Dh's response was 'I'm sure that it's not the first time it's happened' and whispered to me a 'well done' for not getting him wet .

For some reason that got me giggling which meant that it just kept coming!

She was the only grumpy MW I encountered, though.
