Where were you when your waters broke?

At 39+6 wks pregnant today, I have become a bit obsessed with the thought of my waters breaking. Now, I know it might happen somewhere "handy" like on the loo or even on the bathroom floor or on the labour ward but keep thinking what if it happens somewhere that it would be totally mortifying? eg. in a queue at a shop, at someone else's house on their new sofa or living room carpet or in church? Did this happen to any of you? What did you do? How did everyone react? I know that people should understand, that you can't help it, it's a normal part of pregnancy etc. etc. but I can't help worrying how embarrassing this would be!

mine were broken at hospital - that can happen too ...

My first went in the theatre and my next 2 on the hospital bed.

Don't be embarrassed if they go in public. Focus on the fact you should be seeing your baby soon

In the hospital, my DD was born in her waters.

they were broken for me just as dd was born and there was hardly anything, most came after dd was born.
i did put those maternity pads on the bed, car seat and settee as soon as contraction started, infact i think i had one in the bed from 39 weeks.
my auntie's broke at a posh do in a ballgown, best dressed in the labour ward

They don't always go in a big gush. Mine slowly trickled for about 2 hours before the labour actually started. I was at home but had I been out I wouldn't have realised straight away but would have had time to abandon my shopping and go home without anyone knowing.

In the supermarket check out queue. With a big gush. .

they broke the membranes to get him out, he was being born still inside

I ran away. I just abandonned the trolley ad pushed past the people in front. In retrospect, a better move would have been to say loudly "excuse me but my waters have broken, we need a cleaner, some quick-smart packing and scanning and free shopping for a month". As it was, I imagine the people in the queue behind were left wondering what the puddle on the floor was...

The worst of it was having to deal with dh complaining about the fact we had no cereal, tea, coffee or butter when we got back from the hospital with ds.

In a church, in the audience of a concert, my husband had just put his viola to his chin to begin his solo, when our son decided to kick his way out at a bit over 41 weeks. The look on the face of the man on the pew behind me was priceless, and a memory to be treasured forever.

I always thought that if your waters broke in a supermarket, you automatically got your shopping free! Serves me right for believing and urban myth.

Mine broke in the birthing pool as I was pushing dd out.

Once at home the other three in hospital.

In bed, in hospital, just before labour began. And the horrible mw didn't believe me and told me I must have wet the bed because I hadn't heard a loud pop. I was ASLEEP

At home, in my kitchen - I had just stood up to go get DS1 his jelly for dessert and they went with a gush, soaking trousers, socks etc and kept coming. DS1 offered me his potty for the wee wee!!

What I'd say is definitely invest in some of the mothercare maternity mats - I slapped a couple of those under me until DH got home 45 minutes later as kept on leaking!

In the bath at home. Huge gush. Then soaked the car seat-

Top Tip- you need a lot more than a towel on the seat!

Mine broke in the car as I was pushing ds3 out on the way to hosoital.

My waters broke at 3 am. I was 36 weeks pregnant and I was just getting out of bed to go to the loo. I said to my husband "My waters have broken." and got the reply "Go back to bed you dozy cow!" He then got the shock of his life when he realised I was serious.

Anyway I think its quite rare for waters breaking to be the first sign of labour. I really would not bother too much. Admitally this time I am going to put a mattress protector on the bed.

First time round I dreamt that my waters were breaking, woke up, got up to go to the loo and they went just as I reached the bathroom.

2nd time round they went during labour - on the bed at about 7cm.

Last time they went in the hospital lift as I was kneeling backwards on a wheelchair, fully dilated and pushing.

At home in bed, twice. Almost exactly the same time both times. There was a strange popping sound followed by slow trickle which continued in the taxi on the way to the hospital.

I was in the labour ward with all 3 of mine - first one as he was born, second just prior to her appearance, 3rd precious one absolutely no memory of it!!

With dd, I was induced and my waters broke before I was in actuve labour, I had had a show about an hour before, was sat in bed watching scooby doo and I just felt them start to trickle.
With ds, I had just got out of a warm bath, and it took me a few minutes to realise I that I hadn't just not dried myself properly [double ]

With DS I was in hospital before he was born with suspected pre-eclampsia. Was asleep and had a really vivid dream about two snooker balls crashing into each other. Woke up to find the bed was saturated. Was quite glad it wasn't on my own bed .

With DD I think they got broken some time during labour.

just don't sit on any new sofas!
With my first child, my waters went in bed, when I had only been asleep for 15 minutes or so. I thought someone was stabbing me in the back!

With my second two children, my waters didn't break until the baby was born.
