Where were you when your waters broke?

At 39+6 wks pregnant today, I have become a bit obsessed with the thought of my waters breaking. Now, I know it might happen somewhere "handy" like on the loo or even on the bathroom floor or on the labour ward but keep thinking what if it happens somewhere that it would be totally mortifying? eg. in a queue at a shop, at someone else's house on their new sofa or living room carpet or in church? Did this happen to any of you? What did you do? How did everyone react? I know that people should understand, that you can't help it, it's a normal part of pregnancy etc. etc. but I can't help worrying how embarrassing this would be!

Sitting at the PC, evening of my due date. No contractions, just a sudden wetness that briefly had me wondering whether I'd wet myself .

Cue me legging it upstairs to the bathroom to check, to find DH busy painting fresh gloss on frame of bathroom door.

Me: "I need to go to the loo"
Him: "Bit awkward right now, can't you wait?"
"No, I need the loo NOW"
"If you really have to, but you'll have to leave the door open"
"I don't give a fig, I think my waters just broke!"
"Oh...."

And yes there was a lot, it just kept coming. Wish I'd heard of maternity mats; I tried my best with extra-large sanitary towels and went through the whole pack in about ten minutes

Ds1 - broke in the bath in hospital whilst in labour.

Ds2 - broken by midwife in hospital.

Ds3 - broke when I was pushing him out.

ilikeyoursleeves · 22/02/2009 20:47

Mine broke when in bed after having a power walk to try to make them break! I slept with a bin bag under my bum (under the sheets) from about 37 weeks I think just in case, paid off in the end LOL.

BTW I heard too that if your waters break in eg Boots or a supermarket you get loads of free stuff?

neolara · 22/02/2009 20:56

Both times in bed before contractions started. Trickles not whooshes.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/02/2009 20:58

First time I was induced and they went not long before ds crowned.

Second time I was on my way to the loo at 3am!

mamadiva · 22/02/2009 21:05

Mine broke in Mackays a day before my due date, ironically as I picked up some baby towels And was a blardy whoosh too thought I had pissed myself

Midwives ignored the possability that my waters had actually went, I had a membraine sweep and everything 2 dys later but was still told that it was probably just a leak then a week later I went into labour and the midwife tried to break my waters and there was literally a tiny puddle so she said it was defo my waters that had gone and was very annoyed at those involved who told me it was not.

Caz10 · 22/02/2009 21:07

In the birthing pool, so the wetness wasn't an issue! BUT I was so disappointed when I realised that tiny push and pop WASN'T the baby being born...thought it had been quite easy this labour lark.......

alicecrail · 22/02/2009 21:09

On my due date in hosp, just after the midwife had given me some pethidine and told me i had a long way to go
Was shocked at how suddenly they went and how much there was

BenFMsmum · 22/02/2009 21:17

In the hospital bed 1am in the morning after being there for 2 weeks due to "more fluid around the baby than was normal" can't spell or remember the medical name for it!! Much more than a trickle all the time from Saturday morning till ds was born by emergency cesearean on Tuesday lunchtime!!

ten10 · 22/02/2009 21:17

woke up at approx 1am in bed thinking I am very wet and I can't make this stop and then came to a little more and realised it was that my waters had broke.
(but baby didn't come along until nearly four days later)

BenFMsmum · 22/02/2009 21:19

ten10 are you me?? sounds very similar!!

FatController · 22/02/2009 21:20

Mine broke on the toilet after I#d woken up at 1am needing a wee! Very useful to be on the loo as there was gallons of the stuff!

April80 · 22/02/2009 21:30

Mine woke me up! (along with a big kick!)
I was 34 weeks fast asleep when at 5 am i felt a very big kick and heard a pop pop noise, i jumped out of bed and ran into the hall way as that was the only place without new carpet! Did think i had loss all control and wet myself for a moment. Baby was born 3 hours later

StealthPolarBear · 22/02/2009 21:32

being sick in the sink in our kitchen
Was fine as tiled floor but ruined my last pair of maternity trousers so DH brought down

  1. A pair of his tracksuit bottoms. He is skinnier than me when I'm NOT 9 months pg and
  2. (when I sent him back up!) A pair of paint splattered scruffy frayed trousery things of mine. Well at least they went straight in the bin at hospital!
MrsTittleMouse · 22/02/2009 21:37

Both mine went in the hospital when I reached 10cm dilated. I was worried too, but it's actually much more common for them to go in hospital. Unless you're an actress on a soap.

bababelle · 22/02/2009 21:42

In bed at 6 am - perfect timing to ring the labour ward and be told to have breakfast before coming in! Strangely enough I hadn't bothered with pads, towels etc. in bed - except just that very night so that saved the mattress...
Another one who was shocked at how much there was - went through all my maternity towel supplies and 2 changes of trousers before we even set off for the hospital. Bin bag on car seat in the end!

bringonthetrumpets · 22/02/2009 21:50

i was at the hospital when mine went. the midwife had checked me and said the waters were bulging and i was only 3 cms. she told me to go for walk with dh whilst she had some lunch and to come back in either an hour or when my waters went. we walked for about 20 minutes when i felt like i was going to have a trump and my waters went. such a weird feeling! ds was born about 2.5 hours later.

KnowingMeKnowingYou · 22/02/2009 21:52

DD1 was born in a caul (so think this means my waters didn't break?!)
DD2 - Sainsburys' car park, with a trolley load of shopping and DD1 aged 20 mths, DH nowhere to be found.
DS1 - in hospital

westcoastmum · 22/02/2009 22:40

DS - Broken by midwife.
DD - Heard a pop whilst on computer and then felt the urge to go for a poo. When I went to loo to push (tmi ) there was a huge gush. Went straight into labour and by the time I reached the hospital I was 10 cm dilated.

lisad123 · 22/02/2009 22:46

first one was broken for me in labour, second broke on bathroom floor in hospital, just as i got out the bath! 48mins later dd2 was here!

pavlovthecat · 22/02/2009 22:47

alas I was in bed asleep, and they sort of trickled more than broke...I thought I was wetting the bed for about half hour!

pavlovthecat · 22/02/2009 22:48

i did linger in mothercare a while though anticipating it happening there and DH suggested we pop in there on the way to hospital the next day and pretend they went! (I had seen some things I wanted, bit pricey, you know!)

4andnotout · 22/02/2009 22:49

DD4:Lying on a hospital bed with a mw up to the elbow in my fanjo, then as she broke them she had to try and hold dd4's head back as she tried to surf the tide

madrush · 22/02/2009 22:50

both times broken for me in labour

I know where you're coming from, I had nightmares, esp second time around about embarrassing situations

Ceolas · 22/02/2009 22:53

First 3 in hospital, well into active labour.

4th time on the wooden floor in the hall (home birth). Was quite grateful to have avoided the carpets!
