Where were you when your waters broke?

At 39+6 wks pregnant today, I have become a bit obsessed with the thought of my waters breaking. Now, I know it might happen somewhere "handy" like on the loo or even on the bathroom floor or on the labour ward but keep thinking what if it happens somewhere that it would be totally mortifying? eg. in a queue at a shop, at someone else's house on their new sofa or living room carpet or in church? Did this happen to any of you? What did you do? How did everyone react? I know that people should understand, that you can't help it, it's a normal part of pregnancy etc. etc. but I can't help worrying how embarrassing this would be!

Pinkmarshmellow don't worry about it - they will break when they break and nowt you can do so don't worry. When they do go, they're pretty much unstoppable

KnowingMeKnowingYou, have you ever heard the old wives' tale that being born "in a caul" is supposed to give the baby supernatural powers? Spooky!

Belgianchocolates · 24/02/2009 12:00

BOF yep, I have heard of that too. But I always thought that it was just lucky and amongst sailors it was especially lucky as it was supposed to mean that you couldn't drown!

granty · 24/02/2009 13:38

my waters broke at a&e whilst getting my eldest boys swollen eye checked out.i thought id wet myself cos i was only 24wks.i was too embarrassed to say anything at hospital, little did i know my baby boy was trying to make his exit!

duchesse · 24/02/2009 19:45

Gosh, Granty, was your baby all right?

Chrysanthamum · 24/02/2009 20:14

My first time was in a friends house on his sofa! I quickly got to the shower for the rest. What a flood! I was there for over an hour while dh phoned hospital. My bump shrank to nothing as I was carrying so much fluid. Last time I was in bed but got to the shower in time. It was just a trickle. I'm expecting no 3 and do wonder how it will go next.

marie1979 · 24/02/2009 20:23

needahand · 24/02/2009 21:00

In my pool, pushing. DS was born 10 mn later

piprabbit · 25/02/2009 01:41

First time - was being induced in hospital and had had various medical type people rummaging. Got up on the Friday morning and was about to get dressed when I felt a pop. More of a dribble than a flood tho

Second time - I have no idea... went to hospital at 10am, was checked and only 2cm dilated so told to go home. Got home at 1pm, felt immediate urge to push so got straight back in car. 30 mins of trying very hard not to push baby out on A127. Arrived at hospital 1.45pm. Baby arrived 2:15pm. Hospital staff assured me that my waters had broken when I arrived back at 1:45pm - but neither DH or I have any idea when or where... if anyone saw a suspicious puddle in the Basildon area last May Bank Holiday please let me know

LoveBeingAMummy · 25/02/2009 06:29

I had just got in the bath to ease the contractions, and lifted my foot to turn on the hot water tap and POP, looked down and the water wasn't as clear as it was before! Got DH to help me out of bath and get me drie and dressed, whilst I was sat on the edge of the bed and he was putting some socks on me, all of a sudden GUSH, thankfully i'd put a pad on and still had a towel underme. (Nightime with wings and it held it all )

Flightattendant27 · 25/02/2009 07:40

Boringly, on the loo one time and during second stage the other time.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/02/2009 08:04

They were broken for me with ds1.

With ds2 they went during sex DH noticed but I didn't They then resealed and went properly about 24 hours later. I went to the loo in the middle of the night and realised that even though liquid was coming out of me I wasn't actually weeing anymore.

mumstheone · 25/02/2009 10:00

Mine broke while i was on the phone to a friend. It was like somebody had turned on the tap, first a trickle and then a bit more than that. I was sitting on the office chair and that must have been soaked through, but by the time we had got back from hiospital after having my son it was dry.

KingRolo · 25/02/2009 10:06

I thought mine had gone at 39+1 when I bent over in the newsagents and felt a slight dribble.

Later found out that no, I had actually wet myself.

Waters were finally broken by the midwife, 10cms dilated, one hour before I gave birth.

MiniMarmite · 25/02/2009 12:28

At our neighbours house...

We were there for dinner with other guests that we had only met once before . DS was about 8 days late at this point and it was 9:30 p.m. so I was urging DH that we should go home in case I went into labour during the night...as I stood up, a slight trickle...I hurried my goodbyes and shuffled to the door but you know how it is when you're trying to leave somewhere...my final parting words were "open the door quick my waters are breaking". I then 'ran' (this is how it is in mind but I very much doubt it) back to my house to the sound of everyone screaming with excitement...except DH who still hadn't quite figured out what was going on . My waters then fully broke in the downstairs loo all over our brand new oak floor that DH had only laid 3 weeks earlier (there had been much discussion about whether an oak floor in the loo was a good idea)! Felt a bit woozy every time I smelt the hand soap in that bathroom for a while. DS wasn't born for another 3 days (finally induced).

WorzselMummage · 25/02/2009 13:25

First time i had a trickle in bed at my parents house on christmas day and went downstairs to question my mother about how normal that was when they went with a pop on the kitchen floor. I was 30 weeks, dd was born 10 dys later.

Second time they went during the night, i knew it was my waters as when i went to the toilet it was far far to noisy for my little wee so knew what was happening and was mighty pissed off as was only 22 weeks. Ds stayed put for 5 weeks.

Bluemary3000 · 26/02/2009 15:01

Mine went on the toilet after I had finished peeing at 12:30 in the morning. I knew I wasnt going to the toilet anymore, but yet I was. I was v confused as I was still half asleep.

I phoned the hospital and they asked me if i was sure it was my waters. At that point I was still on the toilet trickling away.

My contractions didn't start until 9.30am that morning, after a leisurely Mc'Ds breakfast courtesey of my husband and even then I still had to wait 24 hrs before DD was born.

I would worry too much, but if you are that worried then carry loads of the largest sanitary towels around with you and keep loads of towels and plastic bags in the car. It wont stop thye initial trickle or whoosh, but it will stop the ongoing leakage.

Hope all goes well x

gillythekid · 26/02/2009 15:09

I have no recollection of mine eventually being broken but I do know my Aunty was in Tesco when hers went with a huge whoosh and a splash, right in the veg aisle.

headzookeeper · 26/02/2009 15:48

ds 1 got up to go to the loo at 6am and as I stood up they went with a pop and a whoosh all over the floor. he was born 3 hours later.

ds 2 exactly the smae thing at about the same time. he didn't arrive til 11.40

ds3 mw broke them as id gotten to 10cm and all contractions seemed to stop.

Although I had been kept in hospital overnight from the day before as they thought I was in slow labour and I was only 35 wks and having slightly bloody discharge and inconsistent contractions for the full day and because my others were so quick they didn't want to chance it. Again 6am for the loo what is it with that time couldn't walk back to bed mw wouldn't believe I was in labour.Even though I'd had 2 others and knew exactly what was going on. Eventually after an hour of climbing walls with no pain relief they decided I was 10cm and moved me to labour ward. ds3 didnt arrive till 12.45 they said he took longer because he was smaller???

mygirllollipop · 26/02/2009 16:00

DD1 - trickled a little on New Years Eve after being to toilet, but nobody could drive me hospital as had all had a drink! Went next day and they said not waters, I calculated I was 3 days over but notes said I was 7 days early, MW said baby wouldn't be born for another week after looking at my notes , labour started next day and waters had to be broken.

DD2 and DD3 popped and gushed so much so both times the waters pushed the troley at the end of the bed to the other side of the room.

DD4 must have trickled from 25 weeks or so as had previously been measureing 3 weeks bigger until 28 weeks when I measured 28 weeks. Had homebirth and felt the tiniest pop with 5mls water at most.

I think most times waters do go at hospital (if going) or at home. And judging by most stories on here if your waters going are the first sign of labour then you are in for a long labour or are very early.

Belgianchocolates · 26/02/2009 16:24

mygirllollipop I'd have to dissagree. My waters went first twice and ds was an 8h labour and dd 5h. Nothing long about either of them and they were both on time too.

Jazzy1986 · 26/02/2009 19:02

Mine broke in my sleep! I woke up thinking i'd peed myself! lol

digitalgirl · 26/02/2009 19:35

It was 2am, I was in bed after having just woken after what I a very mild contraction, thought I was going to do a little fart but the parp turned into pop followed by a trickle of water. I was 36+5 so hadn't been sleeping on a towel, but I didn't move until DH got me something to stem the flow so I could walk to the loo and break out the maternity pads. I felt very calm and relaxed, thinking I'd probably be sent home from the hospital. Spent an hour packing but by the time I got to hospital I was having proper contractions.

downbutnotout · 26/02/2009 19:40

Mine went with a splash on the delivery suite floor on the way back from the loo, 40 mins after having been declared to be 4cm dilated. Student midwife popped her head round the door and said "Oh shit!" and summoned help. Ds born 12 minutes later

LouIsAHappyLittleVegemite · 26/02/2009 19:48

I know that when pregnant with my sister he waters broke while she was having her hair done at the hairdressers. Since she was in labour with me for 4 dazs she stayed and had her hair finished while the apprentice mopped up around her.
