Where were you when your waters broke?

At 39+6 wks pregnant today, I have become a bit obsessed with the thought of my waters breaking. Now, I know it might happen somewhere "handy" like on the loo or even on the bathroom floor or on the labour ward but keep thinking what if it happens somewhere that it would be totally mortifying? eg. in a queue at a shop, at someone else's house on their new sofa or living room carpet or in church? Did this happen to any of you? What did you do? How did everyone react? I know that people should understand, that you can't help it, it's a normal part of pregnancy etc. etc. but I can't help worrying how embarrassing this would be!

The pop actually woke me up at 4am! (had dd 8 hours later) Had to get dh to evacuate the bed before the tidal wave! Had no signs before then once waters broke, established labour within half and hour and 3 mins apart within 2 hours. And they say the first labour takes forever

PfftTheMagicDragon · 23/02/2009 09:22

DS in bed at about 7am.

DD was born in her waters.

cmotdibbler · 23/02/2009 09:27

At home in the bedroom - got up from bed and a big gush went down my leg. Spent the next 30 minutes trying to persuade myself that it wasn't my waters (was 35 weeks). It came in gushes when I sat on the loo. No contractions

Went to hospital (had to call someone from work to take me) and as the Dr was examining me to see if my waters had gone, there was another huuuuuge gush all over her

Baby born 18 hours after my waters went

pinkkoala · 23/02/2009 09:40

i was at home trying to get off sofa, but felt them go and didn't dare move as i felt as if i was weeing myself, had to try and get to bathroom upstairs.

Wizzska · 23/02/2009 09:47

In bed at about 4am. Woke up feeling a bit odd. Stood up to gush all over the carpet (still need to replace carpet). Had to move between shower and loo until 8am when mw came as there was so much coming out of me. Induced 36 hours after that, and 24 hours after that I had my boy by CS.

cyteen · 23/02/2009 10:42

pinkkoala lol at 'trying to get off sofa' - i remember those struggles well

doggiesayswoof · 23/02/2009 12:39

DD - on my bedroom floor in the middle of the night as I got up to go to the loo - massive gush all over my 4 week old carpet

She didn't arrive for another 2 days

DS - the "pop" woke me up at 5.30am but there was only a little gush at that point

Got up, went into full blown labour almost immediately

DS born three hours later

andi0411 · 23/02/2009 13:26

My labour pains started in my sleep- I think- and I woke to severe cramping. Got up to use the loo and my mucus plug (gorgeous term) went and then my waters went on the landing. No pop though just a gush!!! I had to have a (tmi) feel and smell as I was sure I'd piddled myself...again. But no it was def the fluid.

sleeplessinstretford · 23/02/2009 14:26

first one in hospital, felt mighty internal pop when sat on the hospital loo having a wee (just prior to midwives breaking them to induce me) second one i was at dd1's parents evening when they started to go,wasn't sure thought i might be weeing myself a bit (although didn't have any continence issues during pregnancy) went home, sat on a towel, changed my knickers for dry ones, realised they were wet again soon after and went to the hospital (day before i was due to be induced)not a big dramatic event second time

Flier · 23/02/2009 14:28

I don't have a clue - was not aware of water breaking with any of my two dcs

TheThoughtPolice · 23/02/2009 14:29

On the loo - 11.30pm

sweetkitty · 23/02/2009 14:31

DD1 on the sofa, thought I had peed myself, more of a trickle than a gush, kept on trickling though, born 4h 20 minutes later.

DD2 on the ned 10 mins before she was born, MW popped them

DD3 in bed at night she was born 95 minutes later

Mij · 23/02/2009 14:43

In the back of the car, where I was precariously balanced on all fours trying desperately not to push. MW had brilliantly told DP to put towels down.

10am Sunday 21st Nov 2004 on a very high stool in cafe nero! Thought we had better leave sharpish only to have my daughter 3 days later! If I had known that I would have stayed and finished my muffin1

I heard the pop as I got out of bed at 4am to go to the loo, so dashed there thinking 'don't leak on the new landing carpet' - I was completely astonished to hear the pop, didn't believe that was true. I thought it was the first sign of labour, but thinking about it getting up at 3am to press your stomach against the bathroom radiator isn't normal behaviour

magnummum · 23/02/2009 19:46

Sitting on the sofa (ours) watching Bad Girls. Slight poping feeling and a trickle - wasn't even sure if it was my waters at the time!

EldonAve · 23/02/2009 19:50

DC1 at home - slow leak
DC2 at hosp - big gush at >8cm

NormaJeanBaker · 23/02/2009 22:04

DC1 in hospital late on in labour broken by midwife

DC2 on kitchen floor 10 hours into labour and 2 hours before birth (planned home birth)

DC3 on the loo - surprisingly neat and then startling since realised what I'd thought was a poo was DC's head crowning and not a midwife in sight. (also a home birth)

diddle · 23/02/2009 22:49

I was in labour only 4 cms, had some pethidine to help me relax and sleep, so i was just getting comfy and dosing off when there was an enormous gush of water, more than i thought there would be, once they stopped and the labour progressed i used a birthing ball and they kept coming out as i bounced, gross but a memory i will never forget. could not have coped with all that water in the middle of sainsburys

SoWhat · 23/02/2009 22:55

I was in the bath and felt a big gush as I moved! There was a pop aswell. Was on the phone to my mum saying contractions were getting quite bad and she said go for a bath - and it worked.

AnnVan · 23/02/2009 23:10

In hospital, five minutes beore ds was born. MWs and DP could see the bulging sack of waters as well as ds's hair, MWs put on plastic aprons waiting for the gush

laumiere · 24/02/2009 00:11

DS1: got up up, went to bathroom, came back to bed, lay down and WHOOSH. DH: 'Did you just wet yourself?'

DS2: Quiet dribbly breaking when sat on my DS's bed. Clearly it's beds with me!

Bettymum · 24/02/2009 09:09

In hospital, with a crochet hook. Apparently there was loads and loads of fluid but I was already 3 days in with a very slow labour and spacey on pethidine so was noticing nothing.
MIL's went on the steps of St Peter's church (coming out of the service and shaking the vicar's hand lol). If SIL had been a boy she'd have been called Peter

imoscarsmum · 24/02/2009 10:06

At 39 week antenatal appointment! Felt a pop whilst sitting on bed talking to consultant and got up to go home with DP and felt gush down my leg "um, think my waters have broken!".

Tip - think it was the earlier internal they'd given me ("just to see if anything's going on") that caused this - ended up with 2 day labour, induction, drip and emergency c-section. Next time (if there is one), I'll keep them well away from my bits...
