How did gas and air make you feel?

I didn't have g&a with my first but did with my 2nd and Oh My God, I bloody hated it.

I'd been told I'd feel a little light headed or drunk but I took like 10 big puffs and suddenly felt completely high. I was so not in control, felt like I was literallt floating and kept forgetting to breathe. I wasn't able to speak and I was suddenly convinced something really bad was happening. It did make me feel like the pain wasn't mine, but it made me feel so horrendous I had to stop.

After, I've spoken to some women who said their experience was nothing like this. Does it affect everyone differently?

I didn't think it was doing much but then I had a contraction without it... When under the influence I gave a lecture about the importance of remembering the First World War, and sang 'I Am Woman', so all in all an interesting experience!

Soubriquet · 29/05/2024 15:52

I liked it. It made me light headed and floaty and distracted me from the pain. It wore off very quickly once I took a few mouthfuls of normal air

toomanytonotice · 29/05/2024 15:53

I hallucinated. I also felt very detached and out of control.

i was about to lecture the dr’s on the fact I had two uteri because I was getting two separate sets of contractions. My brain made up a whole completely logical (to me) explanation as to how that was possible. Fortunately they took it off me before I could think about actually speaking,

SilverSimca · 29/05/2024 15:54

I didn't have it with DS1 as it made me throw up, but had it with DS2, it just kept the pain at bay, it didn't make me feel out of it. I didn't have ten big puffs all at once though, just one every so often, so who knows!

JulianCasa · 29/05/2024 15:54

I vomited straightaway!

I didn’t get it till I was 9cm though as I was stuck on the prenatal ward, so think I boffed it then it just made me sick.

Mischance · 29/05/2024 15:56

I felt great!!

Cattenberg · 29/05/2024 15:57

It made me feel lightheaded and spaced out, but I loved it. It was way better than alcohol.

Yummymummy2020 · 29/05/2024 15:59

I had great fun on it. I had it taken off me a few times by the doctor as I pretty much knocked myself out with it(was ever so glad as the contractions were dreadful😂) apparently I was snorting a lot at one point as I was chugging it but I didn’t care. I remember though when they took it away I wasn’t a bit pleased. I had no sickness thank god but I did feel like everything was an echo when anyone spoke and that I was floating!!!

Screamingabdabz · 29/05/2024 16:01

It sounds awful. I’m glad I refused it in the throes of active labour. It was too late for real pain relief (epidural) so I just thought I’d rather have none than something that left me woozy and out of my head.

Pomegranatemum · 29/05/2024 16:01

Really dizzy, sick and horrible. Stopped after 2 goes. I was in absolute agony, but no way could I manage more g&a.
Don’t know if it’s at all connected, but I have a very low tolerance for alcohol too (not that I was drinking during labour!).

spiderlight · 29/05/2024 16:04

I absolutely hated it - only had one big puff and it made me feel horribly detached and panicky. On the other hand, when DS had it for stitches aged 6, he loved it so much he asked the doctor if he could take some home.

Devilsmommy · 29/05/2024 16:07

I was huffing on it like it was going out of fashion 🤣 had no pain relief so I bloody needed it. Loved that blissful feeling ☺️

AlltheFs · 29/05/2024 16:08

It does absolutely bugger all for me, I have had it 5 times (once for birth), other times for injuries.
Slightly takes the edge off and makes my lips dry.
I once exhausted the supply in 2 ambulances (knee dislocated in a remote place).

mathsAIoptions · 29/05/2024 16:10

I felt a bit floaty and giggly. Like I was stoned with the good stuff. I don't remember it taking away the pain but it made me give less of a care about it.

LightDrizzle · 29/05/2024 16:10

I didn’t notice it having any effect aside from giving me something to bite down on.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 29/05/2024 16:11

I barely noticed it!! Between that and remifentanil (which was so useless I didn't even notice that the pump kept getting disconnected...) I really wish I'd gone for an epidural!

SingingSands · 29/05/2024 16:35

It just made my mouth really dry. And gave me something to concentrate on I suppose.

Pethidine though... was like being dipped in a warm bath and I was totally blissed out on it. Can see how opioids are so addictive. I've never felt anything like it.

evtheria · 29/05/2024 16:36

I felt a bit dizzy then I threw up (into the mouthpiece).

Iggityziggety · 29/05/2024 16:50

I found it horrendous, I used to be a big drinker in my twenties and it made me feel like I did then, conscious but not in control of what I was doing, scared and room spinning, felt sick. Nothing like I expected.

tobee · 29/05/2024 17:13

First dc a tiny tv was on in the delivery suite. Horse racing was on (Saturday afternoon) I spent an inordinate amount of time slagging off one of the jockeys. 🤷🏻‍♀️ .

I did like it though.

tobee · 29/05/2024 17:13

I did have to practice using it though to avoid feeling sick.

Caravaggiouch · 29/05/2024 17:15

Sick and drunk, the room was spinning. Did shite all for the pain, I just felt nauseous as well as in pain. Absolutely hated it. I hate anything that makes me feel out of control of myself. Epidural all the way!

Thebigfriendlymoth · 29/05/2024 17:15

Started ranting about Santa and his reindeer and their ability to fly like I was VERY knowledgeable on the subject. 😂 In fairness it was a few days to Christmas. Loved it though 😳

spiderplantmum · 29/05/2024 17:17

I felt slightly drunk. But then the pain became so overwhelming it basically did nothing, didn't even make a small dent.

Singleandproud · 29/05/2024 17:18

I vomited at first and then it made me very spaced out. They took it off me in the end as they needed me to concentrate so ended up having no pain relief when it counted.
