How did gas and air make you feel?

I didn't have g&a with my first but did with my 2nd and Oh My God, I bloody hated it.

I'd been told I'd feel a little light headed or drunk but I took like 10 big puffs and suddenly felt completely high. I was so not in control, felt like I was literallt floating and kept forgetting to breathe. I wasn't able to speak and I was suddenly convinced something really bad was happening. It did make me feel like the pain wasn't mine, but it made me feel so horrendous I had to stop.

After, I've spoken to some women who said their experience was nothing like this. Does it affect everyone differently?

I had it when they broke my waters as I was only 1cm dilated so they were expecting it to be uncomfortable. I felt totally out of it, I couldn't stop laughing! The consultant was asking if I was ready and I couldn't speak properly, I ended up with a C-section so never had it again but an odd experience.

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 29/05/2024 17:20

I loved it - had it once they broke my waters and the contractions really ramped up. The contractions whilst waters were still in tact were managed through breathing. The gas and air made me feel drunk. i could hear everyone talking in the room but couldn't communicate with them because i felt drunk, i did also have pethadine too which made me sleepy and relaxed me so much that i went from 3cm to 9cm in an hour!

at least with the gas and air, if you don't like it then you can stop using it immediately

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 29/05/2024 17:22

Gas and air did make my mouth sooooo dry though! And my lips were dry and cracked for a week after too

Blessedbethefruitz · 29/05/2024 17:24

Drunk drunk, like 10 hours into a party night and unable to stand up... I only had it once they started stitching me, the diamorphine during labour was much more pleasant and chilled. Would not recommend, and did bugger all for the pain (unlike the morphine which was truly excellent).

Dyra · 29/05/2024 17:25

Mostly spaced out. Like the pain was down in my body while my mind was floating above it.

Though if I'd taken in too much I'd feel extremely dizzy and need to take a few breaths of air to clear my head. It was a bit of a balance, but was fine for the most part.

Now diamorphine. That was incredible. As with PP I see how and why people get addicted to opioids. I was a drug addled mess while on it, but it worked.

Dyra · 29/05/2024 17:27

Oh and they took my gas + air away for pushing. I get why, and fortunately it didn't hurt too badly (diamorphine was still slightly in effect), but at the time I was very sad about it.

Fontainebleau007 · 29/05/2024 17:34

I didn't feel a thing from it.

whyamisotiredallthetime · 29/05/2024 17:35

Hated it
Dizzy and light headed so didn't have it for the others

STIAWH · 29/05/2024 17:35

Loved it! Like a massive G&T!

audweb · 29/05/2024 17:36

Best thing I’ve ever taken it. They had to calm me down using it as it was so good. Only thing I used and stopped when I had to push.

also used it to get my coil removed.

I could feel the pain, but didn’t care. So good.

LightDrizzle · 29/05/2024 16:10

I didn’t notice it having any effect aside from giving me something to bite down on.

Yes, this. Gave me a bit of focus and suppose encouraged deeper breathing which might have been better for me. I wondered if the mouthpiece was even really attached to anything 😂

Jossys · 29/05/2024 17:39

Like I was nicely stoned, you do have to breathe normally in between though.
With DC3 I was so focused on using it I didn't realise the baby was out and kept asking why my contractions had stopped.

Revelatio · 29/05/2024 17:40

Loved it. They kept telling me to take it easy on it!! Made me care less about the pain.

Dryshampoofordays · 29/05/2024 17:45

I hated it, took a couple of puffs but it made me feel out of control. Hypnobirthing breathing helped me stay focussed during labour

Waitingfordoggo · 29/05/2024 17:51

I arrived at the hospital fully dilated so sadly I only got two tokes on it before it was time to start pushing. I probably could have continued to use it but it didn’t feel productive when I wanted to push. I liked it though- nicely stoned as PP said- and I wish I’d got to use it for longer!

My husband had some recently while being moved into an ambulance with a back injury. He liked it a LOT and started rambling about wanting a Batman tattoo. Actually he was sort of yelling because I was outside the ambulance and he was in it and he wanted to make sure I heard about the tattoo 😂

Torturedsoul · 29/05/2024 17:53

Hated G&A for labour, made me anxious but loved it for back in spasm.

ThereAreNoSloesOnThere · 29/05/2024 17:54

I vomited big time on gas and air. And tens made me pass out with pain.

Give me an epidural any time tbh.

DogsDinner · 29/05/2024 17:57

I loved it! Felt like I could get through anything on it. When I think of my labours, I look back longingly on it.

I can totally see why people use it for leisure purposes, although I gather it was recently banned in the U.K.

Amazing how differently people react to different drugs.

toycat · 29/05/2024 17:58

I hallucinated there were people living inside me

NotHooray · 29/05/2024 18:01

Hated it in labour - had a few puffs and it made me feel terribly sick so ditched it.
Had it a few weeks ago in the ambulance when I had a ruptured appendix and the gas and air coupled with morphine was utter bliss especially after the extreme pain I'd been in. Although I did talk absolute twaddle to the paramedic for the remainder of the journey.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 29/05/2024 18:02

It relaxed me a bit. I used to smoke when I was young and it reminded me a bit of a nicotine hit - things felt less awful all of a sudden.

WeightoftheWorld · 29/05/2024 18:03

DC1 - It just instantly made me vomit and retch as soon as I breathed any in, so abandoned it after a few minutes.

DC2 - it helped for the peak pain of each contraction and I used it almost continuously for a few hours. Had no sickness from it that time, don't know why it made me so sick the first time?! It didn't make me feel spaced out or anything like that, maybe for a few seconds in each contraction but I guess that's how it helped! I was perfectly fine between each breath.

tothesea · 29/05/2024 18:10

DC1- during labour.. I didn’t think it was having any effect then I started seeing a pattern on the bed sheet of the Disney Seven Dwarfs all moving laughing and talking to each other.

So tripping basically.

Took my mind off the pain for sure. I had some difficulty explaining what I was seeing to DH though!

DS2- while getting stitched. You know that Blur song…’Whoo hooo!’
it was like that.

Conclusion - gas and air rocks!

cher97 · 29/05/2024 18:17

I've had gas and air with all of my labours. It was the only pain relief I had, it doesn't take pain away it just knocks the edge off the pain but I personally love it 🤣 does make you feel light headed depending on how much you use it! I giggled all the way through my 1st and 2nd labour! Didn't have enough with my 3rd as my labour was quick.
