Prisci · 16/04/2008 18:32

Hi everyone.

And sorry for not posting any sooner.

Theo, Yves, James was born on the 6th of April at 9:27pm weighing 7lb6. We are both doing very well.

Now for the story:

At 1:30am the water broke, we went to hospital at 5:30am, saw the obstetrician and decided to wait until 9:30am to see what to do next as they were pushing for inducing me since my contractions had not started and I was 10 days overdue. They also did not want to check my cervix so as not to insert any infections. At 9:00am the midwife came to see us, to get me ready for the induction. I had to explain to her that it was not decided earlier and that we still did not want to be induced, wanting to wait longer. At that point we were explained that if we went over 18 hours before delivering the baby from the water breaking, they will have to give him some antibiotics etc... As I was being monitored, I could feel some tightening but nothing more than that...grrrrr....
So, since at 5:00pm, there was still no sign of regular contractions, we asked to be induced, our Obs was informed since he had gone home. I was put on an IV drip with petocin and then everything started very very quickly, the contractions were very painful and when I was almost going to go for an epidural, I felt that the baby was near the exit! I apparently, shouted the baby is here and my partner and the midwife did not really beleive me since it had taken so long to get me started in the first place, however when she checked me I was fully dilated and at +1. She got quite a shock since it was only 4 hours after starting the induction, she then called the Obs to come immediately. At that point I was on all four, using the head of the bed as support, she then asked me to go on my back (it was clearly written on my birthplan that I wanted to be squatting). My partner had to challenge her, apparently this was what the Obs will ask me to do when he arrives, we had discussed it with him and he was fine with the squatting and there was no way on earth that I would have turned around...no way....Anyhow the Obs arrived just as the baby was going to come, which was perfect as he just gave me the directions in time ( he was great, and did not ask me to go on my back). The baby had one of his hand on his chest which means that I had two small tears and he came out so quickly that he had a beautiful little face and apparently as his head came out he was looking up just wondering what was going on, not screaming or showing signs of stress and he has been more or less the same so far. Only crying for feeding, he does not mind dirty nappy or our clumsiness at times of being new parents!.
I only received one shot of Antibiotics since the labout went so fast.

Putting some pictures on profile.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/04/2008 19:56

Prisci - he is lush, absolutely gorgeous. Congratulations!

EllieG · 16/04/2008 22:00

Congratulations prisci!

Can anyone wise help me? If my baby is not fully engaged (and this is my first) does this mean it will be very late? Is labour not going to start til is engaged? I think last week she was only 2/5 again....

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 07:39

ellieG - no. You can go into labour before baby's head is engaged. In fact, I think I heard that in subsequent pregnancies, the baby's head never gets engaged before labour.

Likewise, if baby's head is engaged, it doesn't mean that you are going to have it imminently - it can be that way for aaaaaagges before being born

(correct me if I'm wrong, lulu or mars. I think that's the right info?)

breakfast anyone?

ruty · 17/04/2008 08:28

congats Prisci! Well done you! [gorgeous name but i am biased ]

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 17/04/2008 08:38

EllieG - My first baby never fully engaged and I went into spontaneous labour (even though the Ob's said I wouldn't ) at 40+8.

DonDons · 17/04/2008 09:29

Congratulations Prisci - what a beautiful baby.

Happy due date EllieG! I remember your date because it is my sister's birthday today. It is also my cousin's birthday so I am hoping this is a family trait and will go into to spontaneous labour in the next 12.5 hours (wishful thinking emoticon).

Am thinking of issuing eviction notice to baby....

Chuck us a sarnie Squonk...

scorpiohasstillnothadbaby · 17/04/2008 09:29

I feel normal, had a couple of strong contractions last night but i went to sleep; figured if true labour sleeping will not stop it!

TMI: after i had wee today i had a show thing i think, but i don't feel crampy or anything. Going for a walk in a bit.

I am terrified of the fact i have 6 days left before they want me.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 09:35

I'm thinking that Paranoidmummy's induction worked and she's had her baby, but is still in the hospital.

(why, oh, why did I not ask Alan Johnson that bloody question about laptops for mumsnetters )

I have a cold, so you need to keep your brand new babies away from me.

scorpiohasstillnothadbaby · 17/04/2008 09:36

i told you to ask laptop question!!

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 09:36

scorpiohasstillnothadbaby · 17/04/2008 09:36

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 09:37

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 09:37
