Hi All,
Do you mind guys sharing how long you were at the hospital after giving birth and whether it was a natural birth or c section etc. Many thanks x

1st Natural birth- had a really bad tear I was in for three nights.

2nd c section four nights as they couldn’t find a Dr to do the newborn checks.

Alloveragain3 · 22/01/2024 09:43

2 x emcs, 1 night for each

WandaWonder · 22/01/2024 09:44

Natural after birth about 12ish hours till going home

neleh87 · 22/01/2024 09:45

Vaginal birth (via induction). I was there 3 and a half days after birth because baby wasn't putting on weight and I was struggling to establish feeding.

I really regret staying so long. Once I got home and had some peace and quiet and sleep, I found it a lot easier to get going with breastfeeding. Once home, I saw a midwife regularly for weigh ins and they gave me a lot of advice so I didn't feel deserted.

I don't think most people stay in as long though. DP and my mom had to bring extra clothes in for me and baby.

ButterflyBitch · 22/01/2024 09:45

1st birth, gave birth at midday, spinal block and quite traumatic, was there overnight.
2nd birth, gave birth at 4am in water with no intervention and was home by lunchtime I think.

Curious23x · 22/01/2024 09:45

My first I gave birth at 3.28pm, I stayed until midday the next day because I was Group B strep positive, so they wanted to check baby was all fine, vaginal birth 2nd degree tear/stitches so they checked that was all fine too.

Second baby, I gave birth at 4.15am and left the hospital at around 4pm that same day, mainly because it took them a while to do newborn checks, discharge letters. Vaginal birth, no tears/stitches 🙂

0MammaBear0 · 22/01/2024 09:45

1st at a maternity unit - uncomplicated unmedicated birth, baby born at 8am, left the hospital that day

2nd and 3rd were homebirths

ButterflyBitch · 22/01/2024 09:46

I should probably add that the first birth was in hospital and the second in a midwife led unit.

MockneyReject · 22/01/2024 09:46

Natural birth (not that there's anything heroic or superior about that - I was just lucky, both times).

I went to the hospital at 12 noon, gave birth at 1:50, and was home in time to do a quick shop before the Co-op closed. So, about 6 hours.
If it's day time and there are no complications, if baby is feeding well, and you feel up to going home, there's no need to hang about at the hospital.

My previous experience was 30 years ago, and I went up to the ward for 2 days and nights. Things changed a lot between my two, 16 years apart.

pumpkinpiee · 22/01/2024 09:48

Natural birth after induction - I stayed in a week but this was due to the baby getting an infection. Had this not been the case we would have been let home the next day. We needed to stay in 24 hours in case either of us developed an infection as I hadn’t delivered by 48 hours after my waters broke. Turns out the baby did so I was glad we were kept in as a precaution

strawberryswizzler · 22/01/2024 09:49

elective csection - 2 nights
emergency csection - 1 night

Hiddenvoice · 22/01/2024 09:50

Elective c section- went in for 7am and was out by 6pm the next day. Would have been our early afternoon but it was Easter weekend so less doctors on the ward to check over my baby.

Workawayxx · 22/01/2024 09:50

Natural birth with my 2 although had an induction via balloon and waters broken with second. First I stayed 1 overnight, I think because they thought they could help with breastfeeding (but the person trying to help was really unhelpful 😖). Second I left 3 hours after she was born.

DocOck · 22/01/2024 09:53

1st birth - pre-eclampsia and induction, was in for 2 nights before, and 5 nights after birth.

2nd birth - spontaneous labour, had the baby at 3.30am, home by early afternoon

3rd birth - induction, was in 5 nights before as it took that long, ended in emergency c-section at 3.30am, had to stay in the night following as had a mega-baby and then I was home by 10am.

kernowpicklepie · 22/01/2024 09:55

1st - was kept in as I'd had high blood pressure when I was in labour but this was because my contractions were 1 minute apart when they were taking my blood pressure.
They wanted me to stay in for a few nights, I discharged myself after 1 night.
Natural birth.

2nd - labour 5 weeks early, DS ended up in NICU due to struggling to breathe on his own. I got put on a separate ward but after 3 days of DS still being in NICU I discharged myself.
Natural birth.

JBOH2020 · 22/01/2024 09:57

1st birth, born at 9.20am and home for 5pm same day

2nd birth, born at 8:50am and home next day simply due to gestational diabetes and needing monitoring

Suchardchoccy · 22/01/2024 09:58

1st - labour ward episiotomy and ventouse. I gave birth at 10pm sat evening and left the hospital at midnight on Sunday. The only reason I was kept in so long was because they were too busy to do the new born checks and discharge letter. I only left when I did because I complained, I was unnecessarily taking up a bed. When I got home everything was so much more relaxed. The amount of time they keep you in, when they don't need to, because they are understaffed is ridiculous.

2nd - MLU natural birth in water, 2nd degree tear. I gave birth at 8pm and left the hospital at 4pm the next day. Much better experience, but they were still understaffed and took forever to do new born checks and discharge letters.

I'm currently pregnant with my 3rd and I'm planning a home birth to avoid hospital completely!

Good luck! Every birth is different and every hospital is different 😊

pearsandbear · 22/01/2024 09:58

1st time about 4 hours as I couldn't wait to get home! Second time had a home birth so didn't go in at all.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 22/01/2024 09:59

DD1 - vaginal with a post partum haemorrhage. She was born at 13:30, and I was out the next morning.

DD2 - vaginal, born at 5:30 Wednesday morning and we were out mid afternoon Friday. That was because she was jaundiced.

coldbrightmorning · 22/01/2024 10:02

C sections. One emergency and one planned. Two nights which was perfect for me. It was nice to spend that time with nothing to do but be with my baby.

Maternity wards are light and noisy though. Bring ear plugs and ear protectors and an eye mask with black t-shirt to go over it. I did and slept well! I put the baby in the bed with me as the section meant I could not lift him out of the cot they put him in, and I still woke when he needed a feed. Must be some primal thing that makes you super alert to this stuff.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 22/01/2024 10:02

1st 3 nights (baby was unwell)
2nd > 12 hours

coldbrightmorning · 22/01/2024 10:03

Oh and with the first I went into labour about 10.30 am and he was born by section at 15.44

PurBal · 22/01/2024 10:04

1st 2 nights
2nd 3 nights, but went home with a catheter in for 10 days.
Both straightforward natural births (one with epidural one without) with small tears but my bladder got crushed by massive heads both times. I understand this is more usual with a c section.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/01/2024 10:07

1st, 25 years ago, badly managed labour that was allowed to go on for 76 hours. Prepped for section then one last pull with forceps and ventouse got her out. I needed a surgical repair though. Was horrific. In hospital for nearly a week.

2nd, 12 years ago at 42. Easy pregnancy, well managed active labour, got by on gas and air and had a bouncing 9.5lb boy. I wanted to go home straight away as I was absolutely fine but we had to stay overnight as he had an undescended testicle. Was out and home by lunchtime the next day.

Voulez23 · 22/01/2024 10:14

1st time - natural birth with gas and air - we came home about 9 hours after the birth (they expected me to stay overnight but I didn't want to and there was no medical reason to make me)
2nd time - home-birth
