if you had a growth scan at 37 weeks, how accurate was it and what weight was the baby compared to estimate?

I just wondered how accurate these were. Most sonographers say allow a lb each way. I had a scan today which estimated baby is 9lb now at 37+5. Wondered how much weight they will put on up to the birth.

Having one Thursday at 37.5 weeks so will be interesting.....

With ds1 they correctly worked out that he'd lost weight of around a pound since his previous scan at 34 weeks, he was 5lb 5oz so that kinda made sense

smartiejake · 08/03/2008 15:48

I had a scan at 36 weeks for dd1 and was told she was already 8lbs and going to be over 10lbs when born. Scared the living day lights out of me. She was only 8.3 when she arrived the day before her due date.
I know other mums who have told me that these scans are often wildly inaccurate.

LittleMissNorty · 08/03/2008 15:59

I had a scan at 38 weeks and estimate was put at "a bit over 6lb", she was born 3 days later at 6lb 7oz - so pretty accurate for me

Shazza2002 · 08/03/2008 15:59

I had a scan at 39+2, was preparing to be induced so they wanted to check rough size of baby and position etc. They said around 6lbs. Had DD at 39+4, weighing 7lb 5oz. So quite a difference in 2 days!!!

msappropriate · 08/03/2008 16:03

Mine was 1.5lbs heavier than I was told. The next one was 1 lb less than I was told. The sonographer says that the bigger the baby the harder it is to tell. Mine were both whoppers.

TuttiFrutti · 08/03/2008 16:06

Bang on. I had a scan when 5 days overdue (so not 37 weeks) and the sonographer said the baby was about 9lb 3oz. Born 6 days later at 9lb 8oz.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 08/03/2008 16:08

I had a growth scan at 38 weeks at 3pm which said baby was 7lb 12oz. Baby was born at 38 weeks at 7.01pm and was 6lb 12.5oz.

shelleylou · 08/03/2008 16:19

My sca at 37 weeks was to check an abnormality they did give us an estimated weight of 5lb11oz or 5lb12oz. Ds arrived at 40+3 and weighed 8lb 5oz took them 10 minutes to persuade me they were telling the truth and had read the scales right, I nearly got of the bed to check myself.

berolina · 08/03/2008 16:59

I have generally had pretty accurate scans. A scan at term (well, term + 6) with ds2 estimated him to be just under 3kg. He arrived 2 days later at 3010g.

Hersetta · 10/03/2008 12:21

Not particuarly accurate. At 36 week scan baby was 7lb 8oz so they were predicting approx 9 and a half pounds at term. She arrived at 40+1 weighing in at 8lb 5oz.

solo · 10/03/2008 12:59

I had 34 week growth scan due to overactive thyroid and medication for that and was told Dd would be about 8lb 3oz. She was a week late and weighed in at 7lb 15oz, so I guess if she'd been on time, she'd probably have been about 7lb 3oz...ish

mumofk · 10/03/2008 13:14

Different places do Estimated Fetal weight different ways. My understanding is that to get an accurate prediction for YOUR baby it needs to take into consideration you and the Dad- not sure if just your build now, or your birth weights.
Where I work (doing scans) we're rubbish at EFW from scans- we don't do it as routine becuase its no better than a wild guess in the majority of cases.
How we do it- based on tummy measurement (AC) only, then look at a chart that is over 30 yrs old.
So, IMO, depends how it is worked out whether I'd expect it to be a good guess or not!!
Good luck!

artichokes · 10/03/2008 13:16

At 38 weeks a scan suggested baby was 7.5lbs. 2 days later DD arrived weighing 9lbs 4oz.

soph28 · 10/03/2008 13:22

Most people I know who have had growth scans have been told baby would be bigger than it actally was.

Friend had twins recently and was told at about 34wks they were both around 7lbs!!! They were born around 35wks weighing 5lb 6oz and 4lb 8oz.

Chaotica · 10/03/2008 13:41

Had serial scans and ds was 2lb heavier than the scan said (9lb 7oz in real life at 39 weeks) (unless he put on 2lb in last four days of pg...). But he was in a bad position for measuring (apparently).

maxbear · 10/03/2008 14:11

I had a scan at 33 w with dd, said she was on the 10th centile, was born at term 6lb 10, just above 10th centile.
Had one with ds at 36w, showed he was on the 75th centile, was born at term 8lb 10 which was around the 75th centile, so for me very accurate both times.

wobbegong · 10/03/2008 17:08

My scan predicted an enormous baby, which was somewhat worrying. MN people reassured me that it might not be accurate. The sonographer did note however, that the baby was "very low down"- and lo and behold baby appeared 3 weeks early at a very sensible 7 lb.

Surr3ymummy · 10/03/2008 17:13

I had a scan at 37 weeks estimating size of baby at that point at 8lb 14oz. DS was eventually born at 42 weeks weighing 10lb 4.5oz, so I guess it was fairly accurate.

FWIW, having had 3, I found DS no harder to deliver even though he was at least 2lbs heavier than both DD1 and DD2.

tori32 · 10/03/2008 21:47

surr3ymummy that is very reassuring about the delivery Although tbh size doesn't worry me as much as position, as I ended up with a CS last time- dd 9lb 12oz and OP head deflexed.

I was told 18 hours before my ds was born that he would be about 7lbs. He was not even 5lbs and in fact had IUGR. Serial growth scans would have picked it up.

merryberry · 12/03/2008 21:05

37 week scan said 8.5 to 9.5 lbs at 40 weeks. Was 11lb 11oz at 40 plus 10 today. Oops.

tori32 · 12/03/2008 21:30

Oooh Merry that is a scary thought! LO was put at between 8-10lb at 38wks You did sooo well MB x
