if you had a growth scan at 37 weeks, how accurate was it and what weight was the baby compared to estimate?

I just wondered how accurate these were. Most sonographers say allow a lb each way. I had a scan today which estimated baby is 9lb now at 37+5. Wondered how much weight they will put on up to the birth.

one off growth scans don't really tell you anything. i had serial growth scans in both my pregnancies, every 4 weeks from 24 weeks onwards as i have diabetes. the growth was plotted on a curve, & the weight predictions for both children were very accurate. hth.

pucca · 08/03/2008 00:27

I had a scan at around 32 weeks, and the baby weighed 7lb 8 oz iirc, he came out at 38 weeks weighing 9lb 6oz, so they were prett good at guessing from the scan.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/03/2008 00:28

I had 2 scans - one at 39 weeks with DD and it put her estimated weight at 9lb on EDD. She was 13 days overdue and was 9lb 13oz when born (so put on the average oz a day).

The other one was with DS at 38 or 39 weeks - cant remember. It also estimated his weight at birth to be 9lb. he was born 5 days early and weight 8lb 12oz so spot on to the oz there too.

I think it depends on the skill of the sonographer.

But an oz a day is average. So if yours goes to EDD it will be estimated 10lb at due date I think.

tori32 · 08/03/2008 00:34

Thanks all. Thats really interesting because it seems that they are quite accurate. It looks like the estimates are usually not under IYSWIM because all the babies came out more than the estimate. If baby was a lb under at 8lb then he/she would come out not much different, if thats how to look at it.

Didn't realise it was an oz per day either VVV. Heck it could be 10lb2oz

I had regular growth scans with all of mine due to having diabetes.

DD1 I was told was going to be big - she was born at 38 weeks at 7lb 7oz

DD2 I was told was going to be average size - she was 9lb 15 oz

DD3 was going to be large according to scans and she was 7lb 9oz.

Completely random in my experience!

tori32 · 08/03/2008 00:48

Bang goes that theory then! .

I didn't have a scan with dd and she was 9lb 12oz. No diabetes though, DH is very tall.

I am expecting this one to be similar size tbh due to the genetics.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/03/2008 00:49

Yes - all in my family (except me, lol!) are tall. And DH is tall (6ft 1). I'm the short arse at 5ft 6

tori32 · 08/03/2008 00:54

Yes DH is 6'4'' and I am only 5'6''.

Both my parents are 5ft 9 +

My brothers are 6ft 2, 6ft 1 and 6ft 3!!!!!

They are all stick thin too! I'm not sure what happened to me

Lulumama · 08/03/2008 09:12

i had one at 35 weeks, baby estimated to be coming up for 6 lbs, she was born at 40 weeks on the nose, weighing 7 lb 8.....

agree that serial scans present a better picture

you also tend to grow the size of baby you can birth !

if you are having a bigger baby, all fours or supported squat is good to open up the pelvis...

lucyellensmum · 08/03/2008 09:41

i had a scan the day before my due date as my midwife was worried i was large for dates. They told me the baby would be 7Ilb. Two weeks late - 9Ilb 9 oz!! natural birth, no pain relief, no stitches

minster · 08/03/2008 11:39

Like hoxtonchick I had serial growth scans (every two weeks from 28 weeks) - the final estimate was between 7 & 7 and a half pounds & ds was 7lbs 3, so pretty good.

cece · 08/03/2008 11:43

I was told he would be about 10 lbs and probably early. DS was 11 days late and 11 lb 4 oz

Grouchyoscar · 08/03/2008 11:48

Monthly growth scan as the baby was 'very small' from 24 to 38 wks.

DS was weighed at birth on mat unit scales at 6lbs 12 oz

I protested as 'He felt bigger than that'... Community midwife brought her own scales and he was a whopping 8lbs 5oz! he was 40+4 btw so what the hell were those scans about

I feel the whole hospital just under estimate everything

Grouchyoscar · 08/03/2008 11:50

well done LEM btw. I thought I'd done well with DS with only entinox and essential oils

(sorry for hijack)

MerlinsBeard · 08/03/2008 11:53

i had a scan 2 days b4 ds3 was born. estimate was 7lb 1oz. born on thurs and was 6lb 11oz.

ChasingSquirrels · 08/03/2008 11:54

I had one at 36+5 as when I went for my 36 wk check my bump hadn't grown. AT scan the baby's head was well down and sonographer said that was why bump size hadn't increased (whole baby had dropped). Couldn't measure head as so low. Can't remember weight estimate (or if they gave me one) but said it was all normal. He was born 2 days later and was 7lb.

bubblagirl · 08/03/2008 12:06

i was told ds would be 8 half pounds he was born at 39 weeks at 7lb 1 oz every one really shocked though as i was huge lol

carrielou2007 · 08/03/2008 12:12

I was told at my 20 week scan I would have a 9lb baby, Iam 5'8 and a size 10/12. I was all bump and kept measuring 2/3 weeks bigger than dates but growth scans showed a big baby. I went 2 and a half weeks overdue and she was 9lb 6 and yes natural birth which hurt lots...but worth it!

oliviaelanasmum · 08/03/2008 12:20

I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and was told dd3 was roughly 4-5lbs then, when she was born she was 8'11 which was quite big for me as im only 4'11.
She was born naturally and i had no stitches. Bloody hurt though!

Dalrymps · 08/03/2008 12:47

i had a growth scan at 38 weeks, the weight they estimated was right but lo was born 2 weeks later so really it was about 1lb over, guess he must have put on about 1/2 a lb a week from the scan then, if that makes sense?

suedonim · 08/03/2008 12:58

Not me but a friend was told to expect a 9lb+ baby. Friend was massive but gave birth to a 5lb 1oz little dot. In her second pg she was monitored carefully because of the first low birth-weight. All seemed fine but this time she had a 4lb 13oz baby. She doesn't rate scans at all but says she's not having anymore babies anyway.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/03/2008 13:14

I had a scan at 39 weeks that estimated 7lbs 9oz and she was born 2 weeks later weighing 6lbs 9oz.

tori32 · 08/03/2008 14:39

I think it is right then that it is plus or minus a lb then looking at the newer posts. and that scans as a one of/ earlier in pregancy are less accurate.
