Told the wrong sex and the baby turned out to be a girl!

Just wanted to share my own experience. We were told that we were having a baby boy at the 20 week scan, by two sonographers. It defo looked like a boy. Then a huge surprise she turned out to be a girl! Took me a while to recover from the shock. Even midwives were surprised saying it rarely happens. But it does happen everyone, you really never know until you have your baby in your arms…

Congratulations.

Nowgimmeagin · 25/09/2023 12:47

Happened to me other way round, told girl at several scans out popped a boy! 🤣

Happymorningmum · 25/09/2023 12:57

Haha how long did it take for you to accept it?! I mean I was happy immediately but at the same time felt a bit sad for the boy who didn’t even exist (weirdly)

Unless you get a 3d scan later on?

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/09/2023 13:09

Congratulations!

Dizzyspeeds · 25/09/2023 13:11

I was told girl at 20 weeks but later scans showed he was a boy. It’s not uncommon but being told
boy and then having a girl is.

Toddler101 · 25/09/2023 13:14

Oh gosh what a surprise for you! This is partly why I stayed team yellow each time 💛🤭

Congratulations on your baby!

Happymorningmum · 25/09/2023 13:51

Thank you everyone! I actually had another scan at 34 weeks as the baby was measuring small but because of the position we couldn’t see the area, and I already “knew” it was a boy so didn’t really bother. I’m anyway very blessed & happy to have a healthy baby 😊

Wow, that definitely is the rare way round of them getting it wrong.

I'm due any day. DD would love it if the sonographer was wrong 😅.

Roselilly36 · 26/09/2023 15:06

I know someone who was told boy and had a girl too, she was absolutely over the moon, she already had a lovely boy and wanted a girl.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 26/09/2023 15:14

Definitely happens. I have a friend called Alexandra, her parents were expecting Alexander 😂.

3 scans have shown this baby to be a boy, with clear visual evidence to support their assumption. Even still all have said 90% sure boy but you never know for sure until they're out!

Happymorningmum · 26/09/2023 19:44

Good to hear that it has happened to others too! I always knew it was never 100% guaranteed but the possibility didn’t even occur to me. I’m still wondering what it was that we saw during the scan… birth centre midwives said possibly her hand/fingers🤔

My mum's neighbour was expecting her 5th boy. Except the scan got it wrong and they were both gobsmacked and overjoyed to have a girl. Think that's allowed after 4 boys!

DEtU · 26/09/2023 20:04

Sometimes it's the umbilical cord that is misidentified.

Beaverbridge · 26/09/2023 20:09

Happened to my work colleague. Couldn't believe when her husband phoned and told me she'd had a girl. She's now 22, the most beautiful girl.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 26/09/2023 20:11

I was told a dd. 3 times on different scans. Even at 32 weeks. A well endowed ds arrived... Not sure how the heck they missed that! I joked on to him as a teen they pulled him out by a handle!

Ladyoftheknight · 26/09/2023 20:18

Our first was predicted to be a boy, then she popped out and we all had a shock. I was told "I bet you'll have all boys after this" and now have 5 girls! It took a while to get over it to be honest, we hadn't picked girls names and had bought everything in blue and green!

It's been easier to prepare gender-wise with last 2 DDs as the neutral tone baby clothes trend makes them easier to shop for! Now they all wear beige and black no one notices!

SmellyNelliey · 26/09/2023 20:34

Happened to me 9 years ago told boy my 17 year old self had bought lots of lovely greens and baby blues...her first pictures are in a blue blanket,I then went on to have 2 more girls and a boy

Thatsshallot1967 · 26/09/2023 20:52

Yes happened to me although there was no surprise at the birth. After 20 week (anomaly?) scan we were sent for a further scan the following day as they detected a problem with baby and I casually mentioned that sonography had said baby was female and consultant zoomed in and said "now....can you see what I can see?!?!" And there it was in all its glory. I was over the moon and that boy is now 20.

Thatsshallot1967 · 26/09/2023 20:53

*sonographer that should say.

Floralnomad · 26/09/2023 20:55

Congratulations, I hope you hadn’t spent too many hours thinking of boy names !

PinkMoscatoLover · 26/09/2023 21:00

Apparently my mum was told multiple times that she was having a boy. She was so excited as that’s what she wanted. When she had a C Section and she was told that I was a girl, she was so pissed that she started crying😂😂

When she was pregnant with my younger sister and saw on the scans that it was a girl, she cried again.

When I had my first scan that revealed the sex of the baby and it was a girl, she cried AGAIN. It’s only when I had another baby 11 months later (who was a boy) did she seem truly happy.

Tbh I think it was the fact that she was told that I was a boy and they got it wrong just pushed her over the edge lol. Everytime someone in the family was pregnant she always hoped it was a boy. Talk about obsessed!

Enjoy your little baby girl OP

I was wanting a surprise for my second but went for a 4d scan for my second. He had his legs up and was sucking one of his big toes and had his balls right up to the screen. There was no hiding it! Funnily enough he is very comfortable in his own skin and is regularly naked around the house.

mrscotton · 26/09/2023 21:15

I was told i was having a girl at my 20 week scan, people bought pink clothing etc for Christmas, had the name picked and then found out in the January at 32 weeks that baby was a boy.

Took me a few days to get over it as I was imagining the mother/daughter relationship we would hopefully have (i am very close to my mum) but he is now 18 months, very cheeky & a typical boy. I wouldn’t change him for the world. He is definately a Mummys boy especially when tired or not feeling 100%.

Enjoy your little baby girl.

when you were told this at your 20 week scan, were they confident it was a girl? Did they show you on the screen?
