Congratulations.
Happened to me in 1995 and I made the local papers!
I had a bleed from the placenta at 38 weeks and I had overdone it as I was still working. I was taken into hospital for a weeks bed rest.
I had a scan and ultrasound every day.
On one of the scans a nurse exclaimed about the baby being a girl and sure enough on the screen there was an 'obvious' shape of the baby being a girl.
On my last day I was wheeled to my consultants office and whilst waiting I noticed an enlarged newspaper story of a tiny looking woman holding up a ginormous baby and the caption of this 13/15lb baby being delivered at the hospital.
The consultant said I may wish to change my birth plan of having a natural birth with no pain relief as the baby was going to be a large baby.
Given the picture on his wall I was somewhat alarmed.
I told my mother and she said what a load of nonsense that it was obvious I wasn't carrying a big baby and no one in our family had. My mother was also very surprised that I was having a girl and she still thought I would have a boy.
I had been careful not to gain weight and my bump was a nice neat size for a first baby.
When my waters broke the agreement had been that my father would drive to take me to the hospital if it was before 9.30om as my partner did not drive.
Local taxi would not take me so I was told to call an ambulance. My partner called for one at 10.00pm and was told none were available and they were sending a police car!
It was rather exciting and a distraction from the contractions to be sat in the back of a police car being driven to hospital! The officers were lovely, one older with children who said he always wanted to deliver a baby and his young colleague who looked terrified at the prospect!
I duly gave birth fairly easily with no pain relief to a 6.2lb boy!
I was kept in again for a few days as my baby was a bit of a bugger and didn't want to latch on and I point blank refused to bottle feed despite the coercion of the nurses but that's a whole different story.
During my couple of days there the Registrar came to see me and she asked if I was a celebrity as she had press asking to see me and get a photo!
Unknown to me the police officers had passed the story on to public relations and it was a nice human interest story to promote public relations with the police and several local newspapers took up the story and they wanted to get a photo of baby and I!
As I was taking to her I also mentioned how amusing it was that my baby was small and also a boy and I recounted the scan and the consultants findings about baby supposed to be a large girl!
She was concerned I would sue the hospital but I laughed as I found it funny.
The moral of this story? My mother is always right!
