Waters have broken, no contractions. 6 days now when to get induced?

My waters went on Monday and I’ve been waiting for contractions to start.

I’ve had regular no hyperinflation at the hospital and myself and baby are fine and no signs of infection.

But how long do I leave it? I really didn’t want to be induced and worried about the level of pain and escalation it often leads too.

today is my due date so baby is full term.

has anyone been through anything similar where they have waited for contractions?

thank you x

Sorry that should say regular monitoring at the hospital

I didn't know you could leave it that long after waters break. So you're being monitored at the hospital? Daily? I think you need to try and push to get the show on the road because it all sounds a bit unnecessarily risky. Good luck!

minipie · 23/07/2023 14:52

I’m surprised you haven’t been induced already. I would at least ask for a sweep. Antibiotics would also be a good idea.

2bazookas · 23/07/2023 14:53

Tell the senior ward staff you are worried about this and need to discuss it with your consultant. Would they please convey this message to your consultant.

tryingtorelaxandgivebirth · 23/07/2023 14:54

I think it's entirely up to you considering there's no sign of infection.

I can't really tell you anything other than what I'd do in your situation.

I think a week with no waters would probably be my limit especially given you're 40 weeks. I'd go for a pessary induction, but decline the drip. If that didn't work I'd book in a C-section.

Reason being I think it's harder for baby to shift in to optimal positions during labour once waters have gone and I wouldn't want to have those intense contractions that a drip can cause without the fluid there.

That's a very personal choice, only you know what you feel comfortable with.

Diamondbabe · 23/07/2023 14:55

They have suggested an induction but I have held off as I’ve wanted the baby to come on it’s own but obviously this can’t go on indefinitely.

They wouldn’t do a sweep because of risk of infection with waters already going.

Just get induced, I can't see any brilliant reasons to sit around and wait for an infection to set in.

tryingtorelaxandgivebirth · 23/07/2023 15:00

As long as OP isn't having sweeps, exams, sex - the risk of infection is low and she's being monitored regardless.

Perfectly valid for her to not want to rush baby out.

CallMeDiaz · 23/07/2023 15:03

But the point is that being monitored isn't going to stop an infection setting in. All it'll do is let the staff know there is now an infection.

I don't see any upside to that risk.

headcheffer · 23/07/2023 15:06

I'm surprised you haven't been induced already, you and your baby are at risk of infection. Ask for a pessary.

Sunnysal · 23/07/2023 15:08

I ended up with a prolapsed cord after my waters broke. It was a long time ago , but I still remember my son being navy blue. I was told to 'grit my teeth' as they cut and rushed to get him out. Make sure youvare being monitored really well.

HowcanIhelp123 · 23/07/2023 15:17

Infection risk is colossal! I'm shocked they've left it this long:
www.chelwest.nhs.uk/your-visit/patient-leaflets/womens-services/your-waters-have-released-waters-have-broken-2013-what-are-your-options#:~:text=Before%20the%20waters%20release%20there,it%20is%204%20in%20100.&text=Decreased%20chance%20of%20infection%20for%20you%20and%20your%20baby.
"Before the waters release there is a 1 in 200 chance of infection and after they release (and within the first 24 hours) this increases to 1 in 100. At each 24 hours after this that chance doubles, so at 48 hours the chance is 2 in 100 and at 72 hours it is 4 in 100"
You're on day 6! Based on the doubling you're now at 32% chance of infection and labour hasn't even started yet, and an induction can take days. Get to hospital and get that baby out!

I'm sorry OP but your concerns over an induction could make your baby very very poorly. Ask to speak to a consultant about the risks. At this stage I wouldn't be surprised if they really push emergency C section.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 23/07/2023 15:19

Crikey, i wasn't allowed to go more than 24hours after my waters broke due to risk of infection.

Honestly, just get baby out and here safely, why would you wait?

Same!
They sent me off for a walk. I went up a steep hill, down again, around and around. DD1 was reluctant to let go, so I had an induction the next morning. It was quite painful, but I had an epidural and all was well. Born within 12 hours.

Simonlebonbon · 23/07/2023 15:28

Get induced ASAP.

And I had an induction with no waters, no pain relief and baby was 10lb15oz and that was by far my easiest birth.

Please just get induced, the waiting is so unsafe.

Smittenkitchen · 23/07/2023 15:32

I was never keen on the idea of an induction, although I never imagined I'd need one for some reason. But my water's broke and no sign of regular contractions so I was induced with drip, my hospital only let me go about 17 hours. I'd say it was a bit more intense than my previous non-induced birth but not massively so. In your position I would really go for induction as soon as possible. Best wishes to you and your baby.

Smittenkitchen · 23/07/2023 15:33

*waters 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thelonelygiraffe · 23/07/2023 15:34

So you're 37 weeks? I'm amazed they have let you go this long with no waters. When mine broke and labour didn't start, I was admitted and induced.

Zlistcharacterinashitshow · 23/07/2023 15:38

I'd get that baby out ASAP...

Insheerpanic · 23/07/2023 15:47

Hope you're at the hospital and have been induced, I'd want baby out ASAP! Hope everything is ok x

QueenofLouisiana · 23/07/2023 15:54

I was given 48 hours, with midwife checks twice a day- morning and late afternoon. I did start a spontaneous labour after about 44 hours but had to go into hospital as planned at 48 hours anyway.

I think I’d get some medical help to get the baby moving now.

Exibstudent · 23/07/2023 15:55

My eldest nearly died when I was left six days after my waters went with daily monitoring due to a break down in communication and failure to follow the correct process in the unit. I didn't know to ask to be induced. I was having daily monitoring too.
The risk of infection is absolutely massive.

BirdGarden · 23/07/2023 16:03

I ended up on day 5 after waters broke; was induced at 72 hours as I didn't get a single pain or even Braxton Hicks, but even with pessary and drip labour took days. No monitoring or antibiotics given prior to induction. Baby and I developed sepsis during labour and wouldn't have survived if we'd not been in a hospital with an NICU, like someone else said there was a huge grit teeth, cut and rush at the end because they were playing with minutes to save her (hospital cock up that it hadn't gone to emergency C-section, but there we go!).

I would not recommend waiting a second longer.
