Waters have broken, no contractions. 6 days now when to get induced?

My waters went on Monday and I’ve been waiting for contractions to start.

I’ve had regular no hyperinflation at the hospital and myself and baby are fine and no signs of infection.

But how long do I leave it? I really didn’t want to be induced and worried about the level of pain and escalation it often leads too.

today is my due date so baby is full term.

has anyone been through anything similar where they have waited for contractions?

thank you x

I got a stonking infection after a missed SROM, ended up with an awful birth and DS being in distress both before and after birth. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Sorry don’t mean to frighten you but I’d be getting things going ASAP.

My waters broke and the hospital wanted to induce me straight away, but I declined as I had in mind I would give it 48 hours as I didn't want an induction for the same reasons you've mentioned. I also wanted to be in the midwife led unit not labour ward. However they wouldn't let me go home as I was put on IV antibiotics (I had tested positive for group B strep at an earlier swab, but not at the end of pregnancy). Consultant came in twice and kept advising induction and tell me I was going against medical advice by waiting. I waited about 16 hours in the end, spending the time walking as much as I could with the iv antibiotics, bouncing on the ball, trying to relax with comforting foods and back rubs etc to try get the oxytocin going! Then I decided to sleep for a bit and agreed to the induction, they said it had to be drip as can't give the pessary since waters gone. I did find it very intense with no break in-between contractions and no gradual build up, I had an epidural after 6 hours which gave me relief but I was also able to move my legs and feel the huge urge to push and move into a better position for pushing. Baby was born 4 hours after the epidural no assistance needed and only stitches for internal grazes/tears and a very smooth recovery. So all in all very happy with how the birth ended!

I'm surprised they have let you go this Long
My waters broke on the Monday and I was told 48 hours maximum
He was born on Wednesday lunchtime

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/07/2023 16:20

Just saw PP
I had a cord prolapse too and ended up with crash section

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/07/2023 16:25

My waters broke and nothing happened... I was induced almost 2 days later... but mistake. Huge infection! Please go and get sorted OP. I wish I'd known about the dangers of waiting.

Totalwasteofpaper · 23/07/2023 16:28

Is this real??????

i thought 24 was the MAX most people waited. If you were reallyreally against it hospitals let you go to 48 hours..

I would want that baby out NOW.
Sorry to be blunt but are you not worried your baby will die?

carly2803 · 23/07/2023 16:30

why are you waiting?! for infection to set in?

sorry to be blunt but get that baby out! you are risking lives here...

nocoolnamesleft · 23/07/2023 16:31

I'd be worried about the risk of ascending infection, and wanting to get the baby out.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2023 16:39

You need to get induced.

You are at very serious risk of infection which could be catastrophic.

You are going to be in pain like no other regardless (if this is not your first baby you will have some idea of what you're in for).

If you're induced, you can get an epidural.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2023 16:41

And just for perspective here - normally if waters break, induction follows no more than 24 hours later if no progress of labour.

I do not know what your medical team are playing at.

fuckmyuteruslining · 23/07/2023 16:45

I think you're out of your mind tbh. Get to hospital, go with induction or tell them you want a c section.

justasking111 · 23/07/2023 16:46

I'm so shocked at this medical team. Ours will only allow 48 hours max and then things can go wrong.

TheChosenTwo · 23/07/2023 16:46

Are you in the U.K.? I’ve had 3dc, no inductions as my waters were broken for me in hospital as labour was already well established all 3 times but I too was under the impression that hospitals weren’t really keen on you going for longer than 24 hours due to risk of infection for the baby. I’m actually gobsmacked that you are 6 days after waters breaking and they haven’t pressed this rather important, frankly potentially life or death information, on you. And I can’t understand why you’re holding off an induction either: surely the baby’s safety is paramount here??

WeWereInParis · 23/07/2023 16:47

I was induced on my due date after my waters broke at 34 weeks.

It was fine, I guess maybe because my waters had already broken. I had the gel which kicked off contractions immediately, pretty uncomfortable but not really in pain for 9 hours, then 2 hours of more ramped up contractions, then she was born.

No, not on my due date! I was induced at 37 weeks.

Ihavekids · 23/07/2023 16:48

Sorry op, another one here who wasn't allowed to go more than 24h with ruptured waters. I'd ask for induction asap- actually if I'm brutally honest I'd ask for a c section to be on safe side. And that's coming from someone who's extremely keen to avoid a section. I'm really surprised they've 'let' you go 6 days.

It's time to meet baby 👶

Best of luck and please update us!

Polik · 23/07/2023 16:49

When my waters broke at home I was told I had to be at hospital in 24h if contractions hadn't got me to hospital before then.

That said, I'd be inclined to insist on a planned c section rather than an induction.

UnfortunateTypo · 23/07/2023 16:57

I was left for over 24 hours after my waters were broken, and as a result my daughter developed Group B strep. Please get checked, you might need antibiotics to stop that from happening.

Unwisebutnotillegal · 23/07/2023 17:20

Just joining the chorus of getting a C-section. At this stage you and the baby are both at risk and it needs to be treated as an emergency.

Optimist2020 · 23/07/2023 17:22

This thread can’t be real! Why don’t you want to be induced? Your risk of infection is very very high. My waters broke and within 24 hrs I was induced. However my LO developed an infection , I needed an emergency c section and we were in hospital for a week. Please get checked out.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 23/07/2023 17:24

If he comes on his own does he get a medal or something?

elliejjtiny · 23/07/2023 17:28

If you aren't full term then the advice (unless it's changed since I had my youngest) is to watch and wait and give antibiotics. Because there is also a risk of the baby having long term complications if born prematurely. My waters broke at 35 weeks with my younger 2 dc (separate pregnancies). With dc4 I opted for an immediate c-section. I wasn't a priority so I had to wait until 2 days later and we both had antibiotics post birth. Dc4 was in the neonatal unit for 4 weeks and has long term problems from being born early. With dc5 I waited because I wanted to avoid long term complications for him and this was encouraged by my consultant. On day 9 I developed an infection and was induced. I ended up with a crash c-section and we both had sepsis. Dc5 is fine with minimal long term damage but if I could choose again I would have had a c-section at 35 weeks because he came so close to dying and I would rather he have development delays than nearly die.

sheeplikessleep · 23/07/2023 17:32

My waters broke 72 hours before DS2 was born. I wasn’t induced but he did have an eye infection (as well as jaundice as he was 3 weeks early).

In hindsight I wish I had pushed for antibiotics whilst in labour, as it dragged on. I didn’t know at the time as he was my first but I’m sure antibiotics would have prevented the yellow gunk pouring out from his eye. Trying to get sterile water to clean his eye in middle of night in a busy maternity unit along with going to SCBU because of his jaundice levels. And I actually think an eye infection, we were lucky it wasn’t a worse infection tbh.
Good luck but worth considering getting induced and asking for antibiotics as well.

Jb2182 · 23/07/2023 17:40

My waters broke on Saturday night, contractions started 24 hours later and baby was born Monday lunchtime. In that time baby had got a massive infection and had to be on antibiotics for 6 days in hospital. Go and get sorted ASAP!

StackBlocks · 23/07/2023 17:42

I am surprised they have left you this long at full term. My waters broke but I was slightly pre-term, no sign of contractions, hospital wanted to leave me to 37 weeks but after 5 days i insisted on an induction. My baby was fine but if I had been full term I wouldn’t have wanted to wait more than 24 hours because of the infection risk.
