Waters have broken, no contractions. 6 days now when to get induced?

My waters went on Monday and I’ve been waiting for contractions to start.

I’ve had regular no hyperinflation at the hospital and myself and baby are fine and no signs of infection.

But how long do I leave it? I really didn’t want to be induced and worried about the level of pain and escalation it often leads too.

today is my due date so baby is full term.

has anyone been through anything similar where they have waited for contractions?

thank you x

I had 2 births where my waters broke and I had to be induced as labour didn't start in 24 hrs. I had an epidural and very quick labours both times. It wasn't what I originally planned (and I was upset the 1st time) but actually they were lovely and calm and turned into the ideal scenario. Please don't fear being induced to an extent that may risk infection. All the best!

I ended up being induced due to high blood pressure and I really didn’t want to be. It was much better than I expected. I had an epidural after around 5 hours but could still feel my legs and could still push. It was a much better experience than I’d imagined when I was first told I had to be induced. I think given the infection risk I would go
for it asap.

How far along are you? My waters broke at 25w and baby stayed in until 35w, they were trying to get me to 37w. Infection risk is high though so if you’re over 37w there’s no reason to wait….

This is madness, go in and have the induction

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/07/2023 19:20

As the baby is full term I'd go in now and get things started. Good luck OP.

Hey OP hope things have progressed on their own by now.

My waters went at 24 weeks pregnant and I did manage to hold off until 28 weeks before I went into labour. But my body actually started going into labour because of an infection.

My previous 2 babies also had their waters go early too and also ended in infection.

Hospital said to me, at 24 weeks, the risk of prematurity outweighed the risk of infection and cord prolapse. But if it was term then it wouldn't be worth waiting for the infection risk would be higher than induction risks.

I really hope the hospital have you on a course of antibiotics already. Ask for the antibiotics via a drip too.

Also please, if an infection does happen, ask your hospital about fungal infections. My middle son died due to a fungal infection (caused by thrush), everyone was so focused on a bacterial infection. Same happened again with DS3 but this time it was spotted by the lab who tested my placenta post birth.

Best of luck. I'd really go for an induction.

Really hope you and baby are ok x

@Diamondbabe hopefully it's all behind you now and you've had a bonny baby

Hollyppp · 27/07/2023 10:32

I’m shocked.
my waters broke and after 24 hours I had 7 doctors telling me I needed a c section (baby not in distress just fear of infection). I challenged opinion and managed to let them leave me alone til 36 hours but then I was firmly told I needed a c section or me and baby would be at risk

SemperIdem · 27/07/2023 10:36

I hope all is well with you and the baby op.

I am surprised that 6 days has been allowed or considered a good idea.

My waters went prior to labour starting, I was told outright if the baby hadn’t be been by 48 hours after, I would need a section because it was so risky in terms of infection.
