How long were you in hospital for as a FTM?

Just that really, interested to know how long you were in hospital for e.g. What time of day was it when you went, had you laboured at home for a while before going in, how long did it take before you delivered and then how long before they let you out?

I know it varies massively and there's no way to know but I think my DH seems to feel it's going to be a quick pop in and be out again within 12 hrs. He's very concerned about not being able to shower to wash his hair each day 😂😂 priorities right?!

Just to point out that you can Leave hospital whenever you choose. Feeding issues are not a reason for staying- the direct opposite in fact.

Back in my day (1972) FTM's stayed in hospital for 10 days after delivery, time to rest, recuperate, practise breastfeeding. Wards were large so there was a lot of mutual support and encouragement from other new mums, and of course the midwives who examined all of us daily. Visiting times were limited and so were visitor numbers so pushy MILs had no chance to take over. By day the babies were in the ward beside their mothers, but at night they were taken away to a night nursery so we could sleep. Bottle fed babies were fed at night by the nurses, breast fed ones were brought in for a feed then taken away by the nurse to be changed. By the time we went home on day 10, we were rested, past the baby blues crying, stitches were healing, (whichever) feeding was established and we'd been bathing and (cotton) nappy changing our new babies with midwives on hand to help if needed. When you finally got home, the local midwife visited regularly to make sure all was well.

My (ex midwife) Mum thought we were being shortchanged with "only" 10 days , as in her day FTM's "lay in" for two weeks.

Yes but births were highly medicalised, episiotomies were the norm and for many breastfeeds hindered by early bottle supplements and interference. I’d have absolutely hated it.

Went in about 5am-ish, gave birth 7.30-8am, stayed overnight and was signed out next day (wish I had stayed a bit, as I basically got home and couldn't find my own head if I tried).

Arrived at 4:10pm, had her at 4:53pm, left hospital at 11:45pm.
It was bloody marvellous.
I had a hellish pregnancy though!

I laboured at home for a few hours, got to hospital at 1am and was 6cm, dd born 7am, they said I could have gone home that afternoon but I chose to stay one night to help with her feeding

Arrived 7.45pm, baby born at midnight, left early afternoon. So about 19 hours. Second time we arrived at 3am, baby arrived 5am, home by 1pm.

Was in for nearly a week. Went in on Saturday am to be induced. Had baby Monday pm, had to stay in hospital until Friday pm as they were treating me for an infection and once that was gone baby got jaundice.

The visiting hours were 10am - 8pm, so if yours are similar then your husband should have plenty of time to shower!

Nine nights with my first, including induction/labour for the first two nights and then seven nights after the birth due to pre-eclampsia and sepsis.

Three nights with my second, planned C-section

Sounds like bliss! My mum reminisces about this era too

ferntwist · 11/05/2023 22:15

That was in reply to @2bazookas post about the 70s

Phos · 11/05/2023 22:17

Went in Saturday evening about 7, they gave me the pessary overnight, nothing happened so I was induced with the drip at 4am, laboured with a baby who could never have been born vaginally due to position for 20 hours before having an emergency c-section. Shoved on a ward at half one, ignored until 6am (no tea and toast for me), stayed one full day and then discharged myself the next morning because I wasn't spending one more day there listening to the 7 kids of the woman opposite running up and down screaming all day long, getting no sleep because it was boiling and having a senior midwife tell me I was "obviously doing it wrong" because baby was struggling to latch and my nipple was bruised.

cadburyegg · 11/05/2023 22:19

I got to hospital at 5pm on a Monday and DS1 was born at 1.25am on the Tuesday so we were in that night obvs, I was taken to the postnatal ward at 6am but H had to go home for a few hours as visitors weren't allowed til 11. We were kept in another night because he had trouble feeding, again H had to go home. They were pretty keen for us to go on the Wednesday! I think we left at about 3ish? So just under 48 hours.

A month! 3 weeks before the birth with placenta praevia and a week after, then baby in a further week.

cocksstrideintheevening · 11/05/2023 22:20

36 hours, EMCS at 31 weeks, I was chucked out, DTs stayed in for six weeks. APH, transfusion, laboured to 6cm and then section.

I'm glad I didn't give birth in that era! Two nights was bad enough, I'd have left straight after my shower before moving to the postnatal ward if I'd been told I could. I was far more comfortable and able to sleep, focus on breastfeeding and so on at home.

LadyJ2023 · 11/05/2023 22:33

Zero time in hospital all home births
First 8 hours labour and midwives literally arrives 10 mins before he arrived on the living room floor lol.
Second 2 and half hours labour and he was born on sofa
Third and fourth twins 45mins labour midwives arrived and didn't even get to unpack there kit before twin 1 came out and twin 2 literally followed straight away.
Best ever home births for me eating drinking tv all my usual stuff before they came

bexyo · 11/05/2023 22:41

I went into labour 4am, went to hospital at 12:30 and had my son just gone 1! I could have left on the day however I chose to stay as we needed help BF.

I think everyone's experiences are so different it just depends how your labour goes!

drV · 11/05/2023 23:05

Went in Thursday morning as waters broke unexpectedly at 36 weeks. Delivered baby girl on Friday morning. But we had to stay till Sunday noon!

namechange1986 · 11/05/2023 23:15
