How long were you in hospital for as a FTM?

Just that really, interested to know how long you were in hospital for e.g. What time of day was it when you went, had you laboured at home for a while before going in, how long did it take before you delivered and then how long before they let you out?

I know it varies massively and there's no way to know but I think my DH seems to feel it's going to be a quick pop in and be out again within 12 hrs. He's very concerned about not being able to shower to wash his hair each day 😂😂 priorities right?!

30 hours before birth, 3 and a half days afterwards as dc1 was an emcs 80 odd hours after my waters broke and then had a NICU stay.

holaholiday · 29/04/2023 18:48

In for a week both times due to both babies needing IV antibiotics…...not my envisaged births at all!

TheInterceptor · 29/04/2023 18:50

1st baby I was in on Friday for induction, had him vaginally 5am Monday morning, and home by 4pm same day.

2nd/3rd/4th all CS, in for 2-5 days depending on their health.

Goingthere · 29/04/2023 18:51

I was induced. Arrived at hospital at 8am on day 1, baby was born at 11.30pm on day 2 and we went home at about 6am on day 3. So very quick between giving birth and being discharged, but I couldn't face another minute on a ward!

TrueScrumptious · 29/04/2023 18:52

About a day and a half with the first DC, and about 12 hours with the second. Both involved staying overnight. Dads were not allowed to stay.

AlltheFs · 29/04/2023 18:55

I went in to be induced but it had to be abandoned as I had a reaction to it, actual birth was 6.5hrs start to finish-spontaneous labour but I was already there. The gap between the abandoned induction and labour was about 9hrs I think.

I had to stay in for 24hrs after birth as I had GD and they have to monitor baby blood sugar for that long after as standard- she was absolutely fine but it’s non negotiable as there’s a risk.

I then transferred for 3 nights to a local postnatal unit for breastfeeding support and care. It was heavenly there. Entirely my choice, but it has amazing staff and lovely food. I’d have stayed for a month. I absolutely recommend doing that. We are very lucky to have it.

6 days. Induction due to being 2 weeks overdue. That was on the Friday, baby born early hours of Saturday the next day. Baby was in NICU due to birth complications and I was unwell to. Awful experience

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/04/2023 18:59

Went in Wednesday morning to be induced. Labour finally started Thursday around 2 pm, baby born at 6.30pm, left at 8am the next morning.

bravotango · 29/04/2023 18:59

Baby born via EMCS at 6:09pm, left to go home the following day around 7pm

RoseMarigoldViolet · 29/04/2023 19:00

Three days of labour in hospital and then baby and I had to stay in hospital for three weeks as the birth didn’t go well and the baby had some health issues.

Nothing during the pregnancy gave any clues that things wouldn’t go smoothly so you just never know!

Squidlette · 29/04/2023 19:09

In at midday.
Home by tea time.

Next time: in at midnight. Home by tea time next day. Should have had a home birth second time. All my instincts said it , but dh was too scared. Instead, I didn't sleep at all and came home utterly knackered.

Fandabedodgy · 29/04/2023 19:11

First time induction which resulted in emergency section - total time in hospital 6 days (1 day ante natal, 5 days post natal)

Second time admitted for hypertension - total time in hospital 18 days (8 days ante natal, 10 days post natal)

Elsmum25 · 29/04/2023 19:19

Waters went at 1am stayed home until 5pm that day. Hosp at 6pm was 2cm then baby born naturally at 21:49. Left hospital the next day at 11:30am so less than 24 hours! Due second in 3 weeks hoping for something similar!!

WeWereInParis · 29/04/2023 19:25

I think my DH seems to feel it's going to be a quick pop in and be out again within 12 hrs. He's very concerned about not being able to shower to wash his hair each day

He probably won't be allowed to stay overnight anyway, so he doesn't need to worry about that.

With DD1 I haemorrhaged but was out the next day (24 hours after giving birth).

With DD2 she was born early hours of Wednesday and we went home Friday 4pm. She was slightly jaundiced which kept us in.

OneCup · 29/04/2023 19:29

2 nights to make sure that breastfeeding was established although I was really getting different advice by staff. Some wanted me out (probably to free up a bed) , others wanted me to stay just to be on the safe side.

RoseDog · 29/04/2023 19:31

First dc I went in at 8pm on a Tuesday evening to be induced at 10pm, baby was born at 7am the next morning, quick, painless, mostly straightforward birth then a massive PPH because of that I didn't get home until the Friday afternoon as they had to keep checking my bloods.

Second dc I went in at 1.25 am he was born at 1.30 am and I was home by 1.30 lunchtime.

Lemondrizzlerain · 29/04/2023 19:33

Went in for a C Section for 9am on a Tuesday and discharged myself and was released midday on the Wednesday!

😊

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 29/04/2023 19:34

Labour started at about 1 am Thursday morning. I went to hospital at about 10pm that evening. I had him at 8:25pm Friday and I was home by 6pm on Saturday.

MummyJ36 · 29/04/2023 19:36

DC1 born at 7am and was turfed out (they insisted I was ok to go) that same day at 9pm. It was a terrible decision and I really should have fought to stay overnight. Please insist on a night even if you are feeling ok, I promise you it will set you off on a much steadier footing.

For DC2 I had a section and I insisted on 2 nights. It was 100% worth it and I’m so glad I pushed for it. But that was a c-section so slightly more full on recovery in the short term.

RealLife101 · 29/04/2023 19:38

First baby I was taken in for induction. Didn’t work so 4 days later I had a c-section. Was discharged 4 days after that as it was a bit of a rough ride, so 8 nights in hospital all in all.

Cantgetausername87 · 29/04/2023 19:41

Honestly it is how long is a piece of string ... even with an uncomplicated pregnancy things can happen which mean you may need to stay in. If you're in the UK he won't be able to stay overnight so can go and have a shower. When I gave birth my husband had to help me wash my hair, sounds like he may need some prepping for this ;)

ILookAtTheFloor · 29/04/2023 19:44

First birth, discharged 2 hours after giving birth.

Second birth, not at all as had a home birth.

Hoping for a repeat of 2 for number 3!

However my sister was in for 5 days as she had high blood pressure.

magneticmoon · 29/04/2023 19:48

Nothing happened at due date. 2 weeks later induced and went into really strong labour pains. 36 hours later and an epidural half way through that, was only 4-5cm dilated so they proposed c section.. Which went fine.

Then 10 days in hospital as I was ok at first but after a few days collapsed and needed close watch.

Oh, then they released me but I ended up back in a&e 24 hours later with a really high temp etc which turned out to be a c section wound.

Some women have a much easier time, it's very unpredictable.

Absc · 29/04/2023 19:49

Everyone’s different. I was admitted on a Friday to have steroids as baby was 35 weeks. Had the induction on the Saturday. Then an emergency c-section on the Sunday. We had to stay in five days after due to being five weeks early.

JeepersCreeperrs · 29/04/2023 19:51

Who knows? I d had friends who were out four hours after delivery, and those who stayed in a week.

personally I was in hospital before i went into labour due to reduced movement, had a spontaneous rupture of membranes and into labour. This was Saturday all day. Then laboured to Sunday lunch time when I had an EMCS. Ended up in hospital two nights, discharged after lunchtime on Tuesday.
