How long were you in hospital for as a FTM?

Just that really, interested to know how long you were in hospital for e.g. What time of day was it when you went, had you laboured at home for a while before going in, how long did it take before you delivered and then how long before they let you out?

I know it varies massively and there's no way to know but I think my DH seems to feel it's going to be a quick pop in and be out again within 12 hrs. He's very concerned about not being able to shower to wash his hair each day 😂😂 priorities right?!

Went in at 3am, baby born at 8am and left at 6pm. I was very happy that I didn’t have to stay overnight as I just wanted my own bed and home comforts.

GiveUsACwtch · 29/04/2023 19:53

Contractions started at 3am.
Arrived at the hospital at 6am, contractions were constant as ds was back to back. Midwife wanted to send me home at 9am as I was only 2cms dilated... luckily I didn't leave as things progressed quite quickly, dc1 was born at 12.52pm.
Back home by 7.30pm the same day.

Was in for about 24 hrs in total with dc2 and dc3.

5 days. In on Monday morning for induction on the drip as my waters had broken but labour didn't start. Baby born that evening but feeding difficulties and jaundice meant we stayed until the Friday.

niclw · 29/04/2023 20:00

My waters broke on a Thursday night around 9pm. I then had a slow start with contractions and finally they were close enough around 5pm on Friday. I was in labour all night. I lost track of time around 11pm as I had pretty much been awake for 24 hours. My son was born with assistance from a ventouse at 5.15am in the Saturday. No one mentioned going home on Saturday and I was happy to just have some sleep as I was so exhausted. I went home around 5pm on the Sunday but this was after I begged them to let me leave. I was a solo parent and they thought I should stay and get help but I wanted to go home so we could start our life together and mum and son. So 48 hours from arriving at the hospital and leaving. I also only live a 7 mins drive from the hospital so not too far to travel.

BeeDavis · 29/04/2023 20:01

I started contracting around 5pm on a Friday night, went to the hospital around 12am and I was 5cm so straight to a room. I gave birth at 11am on the Saturday but I stayed in overnight as I’d had an episiotomy and by the time I was ready to go home it was really late and my husband had been sent home, still some Covid restrictions in place. He picked up me and baby at 8am on the Sunday.

Okunevo · 29/04/2023 20:03

DS was born at 1pm and I was in for two nights. Would have been one night but I went and told them I was lightheaded. Wish I hadn't as it was difficult to sleep in a room with half a dozen other mums. XH went home the first evening and was only back for visiting.

Okunevo · 29/04/2023 20:04

I'd woken up in labour at 5am, got to the hospital at about 9am.

Lockdownmummy · 29/04/2023 20:06

2 quick labours with both DC born within 1hr of getting to the hospital.

One early morning and one mid morning but was in overnight both times, both to do with the baby rather than me.

Can recommend it though - I was never going to sleep the first night with a baby but gave DH the chance to go home, have a quick tidy, a good nights sleep (so one of us did!) to be ready for the mayhem.

Skyeheather · 29/04/2023 20:08

When I had my first (born at 6 pm) I was told I could go home after six hours had passed or stay the night. I choose to stay the night as I didn't have a clue what I was supposed to do with the baby! They woke me up at 7 am and told me I could leave as soon as the paperwork was complete. I left at lunchtime.

My second baby went straight to SCBU after birth and we were kept in four nights and I was discharged at tea time on day 5.

Jxtina86 · 29/04/2023 20:08

I went in on the Wednesday at 40+1, out by Friday 3pm. My bump had shrunk between my 38 and 40 week appt, so went in for a scan and didn't come out till baby arrived! I had an induction mid-Weds afternoon and then had an EMCS at 1am Thursday. They were happy for me to stay another night if I wanted by I hated the postnatal ward and just wanted to get home!

AwkwardPaws27 · 29/04/2023 20:09

Contractions started at 3am on my due date (Thursday), but took quite a while to become strong & regular (although enough to stop me sleeping).
Admitted at about 11pm on Friday.
Waters finally went around 6am on Saturday.
Baby born at 8.20am on Saturday (so 53 hours total).
Home by 3pm on Saturday (at my request, I wanted to give home ASAP).

Relatively straightforward labour (if a bit slow), gas and air + water birth, second degree tear & stitches.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 29/04/2023 20:13

Ten days thanks to my blood pressure having a party all by itself after a crash section. Would not recommend!

blahblahblah1654 · 29/04/2023 20:13

You have no way of knowing. Could be 12 hours if you're lucky. I had preeclampsia and was in for a torturous 7 nights, and went back for 2 due to feeding issues.

Trixiedrum · 29/04/2023 20:15

3.5 days being induced before baby was born. 1.5 days on the postnatal ward afterwards “establishing feeding” ie crying about how hot and noisy it was while baby slept like a log. I mean it was ok really but I wish I had just left tbh, they didn’t help me at all.

My second I was in labour for about 30 minutes when I arrived at hospital, she was born 2 hours later and we went home after about 6 hours.

Your partner needs to prepare for a longer stay. Pack a little bag and chargers and change of clothes for him in case you labour for ages.

He’ll be sent home at night when you’re in the postnatal ward so he can stop worrying about that.

newbie202020 · 29/04/2023 20:17

Went in on the Sunday night after 2 days of trying to give birth again home, gave birth at 2pm on Monday, out at 2am Wednesday, back on at 12pm Friday... it really is so hard to try and predict

Boltonb · 29/04/2023 20:21

Induced 9am Monday. Labour started midnight. Baby born by emergency c section Wednesday night. Home on Friday evening.

ChocolateTea · 29/04/2023 20:21

Went in to be induced on the Monday, he came by section on the Friday night. They tried to kick me out the Saturday morning whilst I was still bedridden with a catheter and high on morphine. Point blank refused and I stayed in until the Tuesday.

DS2 incidentally was an emergency section and they tried again to get me out next day. He was born on the Tuesday and they agreed to let me stay until the Friday, but mostly because of his weight and feeding (we had a lot of disagreements about my want to breastfeed a large baby) and also because I was a stubborn git who refused to go home 24 hours after major surgery.

A couple of days, I was loving it, in for a week given the chance, sadly they wanted rid. 1997, the next day. “Off you go Mrs H, you’ve done this before.

Tequilamockinbird · 29/04/2023 20:32

I was in for 8 days. But it was 1997 and I was a single teenage mum with no clue how to look after a baby.

Inthebathagain · 29/04/2023 20:37

Got to hospital at 9am after 4 hours labouring at home.

DS born 11.55am.

They asked if I'd like to be discharged at 6pm or stay overnight. I chose to stay overnight, so we left about 1pm the day after he was born.

nildesparandum · 29/04/2023 20:42

Twelve days both times but this was 1969 and 1972.
Both babies born by very emergency c sections, got them out just in time. Both DC had breathing problems because of their awful births and I was not well either.
That was a long time ago now.I am now a great grandma grandchildren and great grandchildren's births were shorter stays for their mothers. One was a premature baby who of course was in an incubator for a few weeks.Moher was in for a week.

8DPWoah · 29/04/2023 20:45

With my first, went into hospital for induction on the Sunday lunchtime. Baby born Thursday night but some complications kept us in til Saturday afternoon, should have been Sunday morning but I begged! Partner only actually stayed overnight on the Weds, once they'd broken my waters, though.

Second I went in Friday afternoon for induction and was back home with baby Saturday lunchtime. Partner again went home overnight, thinking it would be a long job again, he nearly missed the birth because the hospital delayed calling him because they didn't believe me when I was saying things were progressing...

CaffeineFirstPlease · 29/04/2023 20:49

5 nights first as lost 1.5l of blood and needed a bit of after care.

2 nights with no2 (planned c-section)

1 night with no 3 and they could
not get rid of me fast enough… also a planned c-section

YukoandHiro · 29/04/2023 20:50

A week, but I got post natal pre eclampsia and DD was on SCBU. Then we were back in 2 weeks later as she got an infection

Wils3011 · 29/04/2023 20:52

I had an outpatient induction on the Sunday as was 10 days over (pessary then sent home with them basically like 'this probably won't work but come back tomorrow 8pm and we'll decide what to do next'). 7:30am ish I got in the bath thinking I felt a bit off but must just be the pessary side effects they'd mentioned, bit later thought it could maybe be contractions but tried to keep an open mind. 9:30 arrived at the hospital, straight to delivery and baby born at 11:20 😂

They wanted to keep him for 12 hour obs as he'd been in distress towards the end, which annoyingly scuppered any plans of going home that day and it took until 3pm ish next day for a midwife to have time to come and discharge me.
As PP have mentioned, partners normally have to abide by visiting hours once you're on the ward so he'll get to go home for his hair wash if you're kept in 😅

If you have a really straightforward delivery I believe you can be discharged after 6 hours but obviously anything can happen!
