Constipation is very much a crying matter IME - never mind having just given birth and being a seething mass of hormones and ravaged flesh.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 10/01/2008 21:31

sounds fairly normal to me, I know I can;t go if I have a tampon in as it does eem to stop the passage

policywonk · 10/01/2008 21:32

Hydration V. important - the stool becomes hard and difficult to pass when you're dehydrated, because the water from the stool is leached out through the bowel.

I really went into this in some detail when it happened to me...

PeckaRolloverAgain · 10/01/2008 21:33

its definitely the poo

as i was trying to have it and felt it come down and then got this very odd sensation in fanjo, had little feel and could feel it

if its not a poo its an unknown twin trying to come out of the wrong hole

typical that after such a quick delivery of a perfect baby i cant get a poo out!

i did actually have one a couple of days ago and felt relieved that i had escaped constipation - how wrong i was!

im worried that my small tear wasnt stitched, does this make it more likely to tear further. i felt it give a little bit and then had some bright fresh blood from it - im hoping very hard i havent done myself an injury

I love mumsnet, where else could I have this convo

please, if you know me, dont mention this

know exactly how you feel pecka lactulose did the trick for me I became obsessed with pooing for about 3 days became almost a spectator sport in our house after ds 2

hoxtonchick · 10/01/2008 21:35

you can take senakot when you're breastfeeding. hope it's sorted soon.

bozza · 10/01/2008 21:36

If I have not been recently I can feel it when inserting my mooncup. I do have an anterior prolapse (slight) but I thought that meant towards the front. And the doctor is not that interested anyway.

I think you should try to avoid straining Pecka - I know you desperately want the bugger out of there but you'll give yourself piles if nothing else.

If you do the lactulose/prune juice/water thing it will come out without straining within about 24 hrs.

nortynamechanger · 10/01/2008 21:37

You can get glycerine suppositories otc from the chemist, these might help soften things a little.

I found a little massage with lubricant always worked on the DCs, clockwise on the tummy and the same on rectum.

Can you hold a maternity towel or a flannel soaked in cold water on your stitches/tear to feel as if you are supporting it?

Keep eating those apricots!

lulumama · 10/01/2008 21:39

pillock !!! that is not right !!

pecka, sounds like it is poo, and you are doing all the right things

fresh pad on the tear

horsey lips

and relaaaaaaaax

and tell us all when you have done it

GreebosWhiskers · 10/01/2008 21:39

You can get gelatine suppositories from the chemist that help things slide out. Not pleasant but really helped when I was pg.

Constipation is a nightmare at any time - I was actually hospitalised with it in my late teens - but even worse if you've just had a baby.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 21:40

pecka, same thing happened to me exactly. you need that gluco-stuff, what's it called? it's a stool softener. you do not want to take general anti-constipation stuff, it will make your bowel spasm and be sore. anyway, don't worry, it happened to me too and it's fine. you just need to do your pelvic exercises etc.

GreebosWhiskers · 10/01/2008 21:40

glycerine even

cross-posts norty

Aitch · 10/01/2008 21:41

lactulose, that's the fella!

ShakeysGirl · 10/01/2008 21:41

Its been like it as long as i can remember. And i don't get constipated so just thought it was normal! Just push on the lump and job done. I'm not complaining about it just that everybody doesnt have it. It is alot of hard work to go without pressing it, never really thought about it before. Lots of sympathy pecka

whomovedmychocolate · 10/01/2008 21:44

Now I was told you could use evening primrose oil caps because they would melt up yer bum and the poo would soften. But this was from a weird, weird woman who probably owns a home knitted fanjo cosy. Is that perhaps an option?

Heated · 10/01/2008 21:45

Tmi I know, but if you rub the 'exit' with vaseline or very soft & wet soap it may also help things along .

Imo lactulose is good.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 10/01/2008 21:47

eh? ive lost a post hope i havent posted it elsewhere

eating more apricots now

can anything actually soften it now its passed (almost) all the way through

It is actually a weakness in the pelvic floor which allows the poo to be felt in the vagina when the rectum is full and you are straining.

It is not normal, but it is quite common, can also happen with the bladder.

A physio trick is to put your feet in a low stool (no pun intended!)when you sit on the toilet, and as shakeygirl said, if you press the lower vaginal wall when you are straining, it should help to let you go.

Its really important not to get constipated, and lots of good advice here about that.
Also pelvic floor excersises will help a lot, and it should start to get better esp as the hormones start to reduce, although it might take quite a while to go.

Hope this helps.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 10/01/2008 21:49

breastfeeding dd as i type and very jealous of the squirty poo she has just had!!

policywonk · 10/01/2008 21:49

I think lactulose works by somehow getting water back into the stool.
