Button up nightdress/shirt for labour - where are they all?

Looking for a couple of fully button up nightdresses/nightshirts for hospital. Last time (4 years ago) I bought a couple of non-maternity ones in a much bigger size than I normally wear and they were really useful but unfortunately I didn’t hang on to them. Looking again now and I can’t seem to find anything.

I’m looking for:
-buttons all the way down

  • cotton (or at least mostly cotton, so I don’t get too sweaty)
  • not super expensive
  • either maternity fit 16 or size 18-20 normal fit
-available to buy online. Can’t get to the shops as I’m on modified bed rest.

Is this too much to ask?! I’d rather not buy from Boohoo because their ethics are so crap (I know others aren’t much better) and the only other thing I can see is a Seraphine ‘birthing gown’ for 40 quid.

Has anyone found anything along these lines recently?

I also really struggled to find anything before I gave birth in March. I ended up going with a button down nightdress from Boohoo and it did do the job, but agree it's not a brand I would usually buy from.

I got 2 from asda back in 2019.

MagicMatilda · 01/09/2021 19:21

I got mine in Primark (not helpful as not online) and also M&S. eBay/Amazon can also be quite good if you have a good old search.

Heartbeats0708 · 01/09/2021 19:22

Primark have these, I got one when I gave birth and noticed they still had them in last week now the more "winter" nightwear is coming out. Any chance someone could pick one up for you?

ActonBell · 01/09/2021 19:24

Thanks - I looked at M&S, Asda and Sainsbury’s but couldn’t see any. Ebay might be a way forward. Amazon are so hit and miss these days in my experience - sometimes the thing is nothing like the description when it arrives - so I’m a bit hesitant.

I had to shell out on a seraphine one last year when all the shops were shut. Spendy! But it's nice and comfy.

ActonBell · 01/09/2021 19:26

Maybe I can get someone to pop to Primark - thanks for the suggestion.

@IWasBornInAThunderstorm - might have to do this. At least I’d get lots of wear out of it for feeding in the night.

Although not button down, Primark do a £6 stretchy as hell seamless nightdress. I got three for birth/pp - did the job perfectly. You don't need to size up either.

girlmom21 · 01/09/2021 19:40

The only place I found that did them were boohoo but then mine were all damaged in different ways on arrival so I ended up with normal nightdresses for labour and then some pjs with button down tops for breastfeeding after the birth

mangowithasqueezeoflime · 01/09/2021 19:41

I go two nightgowns from Matalan for mine a year ago. They weren't quite your specs but pretty good!

sazzt · 01/09/2021 19:42

Boohoo were the only ones I could find too. I saw on here that Gap had some good ones about 6 months ago but when I looked more recently they didn't have anything like them anymore. Could be worth a try in case they have come back in though

ActonBell · 01/09/2021 19:46

It’s so weird. You’d think this was a fairly standard thing especially for somewhere like M&S. Maybe it’s to do with the time of year and some will show up in the autumn?

Or is there a brexit-related button shortage?! (Kidding Grin)

Pretty sure I got a couple in John Lewis.

Milkbottlelegs · 01/09/2021 19:47

And yes, it would have been autumn. I wanted long sleeve anyway as I used to get freezing cold feeding in the night.

goinggently · 01/09/2021 19:48

There's a sale on at yawn?

ActonBell · 01/09/2021 19:52

@Milkbottlelegs-John Lewis have one (just one!) and it’s less expensive than the birthing gown so that’s an option. Thanks!

Ooh - haven’t heard of yawn. Will check it out.

No luck on Matalan as far as I can see. I do have a few more weeks to get this sorted but I’m at high risk of premature birth so I’m just trying to get organised. Maybe it’ll be easier once the autumn stock is in.

I got exactly this from next.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/09/2021 19:54

Mine are from H&M and Primark

ConstantlyIrksome · 01/09/2021 19:57

I had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago! Finally got one in Primark and one in M&S (it's got cats and dogs on but beggars can't be choosers). Next also had one cheap one but it was out of stock so maybe worth checking to see if it's back.

CallMeRisley · 01/09/2021 19:57

I got a few from Asda that weren’t maternity but I sized right up - like this one however I do see this is out of stock in larger sizes:

direct.asda.com/george/women/nightwear-slippers/green-check-print-nightdress/GEM854081,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C18

Try Amazon too.

I had exactly the same issue last summer and all the shops were shut! There's a massive gap in the market!
victopai · 01/09/2021 20:04

Cheapest I found online was Bon marche! Big sizes and comfy.

YorkshireGirl35 · 01/09/2021 20:06

Can you send someone else to primark for you. It was the only place I found any last year
