What did it feel like before/when your waters broke?

Just a curious nosey oneGrin

Did you all feel any pressure or anything just before your waters broke? Or was it literally just a big gush, a trickle?

What were you doing when your waters broke?

Be interesting to read! X

I was being induced and had been bouncing on the birthing ball. DH walked in the room and I stood up to say hello and felt a pop and then a gush of liquid.

MeanderingGently · 11/08/2021 19:21

With my first baby, I was fast asleep. Woke up absolutely desperate to go to the loo, I was half asleep but as I raced to the bathroom something in my conciousness recognised this wasn't an ordinary urge to wee. Despite being very large, I leaped into the bath and my waters broke with a huge gush....
I think my body knew what was about to happen despite being asleep.

Hairylegs21 · 11/08/2021 19:23

I was masturbating. It was my first sign of labour. I have told no one. Then a Hollywood style flood after.i got up.

Narutocrazyfox · 11/08/2021 19:27

Mine didn't Grin First baby was practically born 'in the bag' and second time round they had to be broken by the midwife. Midwife said later they'd never have broken on their own!

Marmite27 · 11/08/2021 19:28

Half past midnight Wednesday night I was coughing laid down in bed.

There was a pop and a gush (no contractions). DH asked me if I was sure I hadn’t just pissed myself. There was definitely a difference!

It seemed to go on forever as I got myself upright (I practically needed a tug boat at this point). I just stood there watching. I finall went to sit on the loo and phoned maternity assessment, where they helpfully told me maternity pads weren’t just for lochia!

DC was born at 8:59 the Friday morning. At 38+1. Of course first babies are never early Hmm I’d have been in a right pickle in these Covid times, I practically had every symptom going Grin

Dd1 broke by midwife as she was about to be born in them, had to try hold her in while she popped them. DD was born in the membranes with just a small patch of head showing so classed as a veiled birth.

DS1 broke by midwife as I was 8cm but contractions were slowing down but still really strong. He was back to back.

DS2 woke up, went down stairs sat on sofa sudden urge to wee, stood up and waters went!
Just as DS1 walks down the stairs and shouts mums pee'ed her pants Grin contractions didn't start for another 2 hours. He was back to back with cord around his neck.

DD2 broke by midwife to induce labour. I was 2cm but stretched to 4cm. DDs heart rate kept dipping so they wanted her out as it was my due date. Born with cord around her neck 4 hours later.

They burst my waters. I was in full blown Labour, close to giving birth

I don't really remember it

Santatizer · 16/08/2021 20:07

Mine didn't go at all with DS14 and were broken for me in labour but had already had epidural so didn't feel anything. With DD 13 weeks they went early at 34+6. Was about 5am and was lying in bed and felt something wet come out and trickle down leg a bit. At first thought it was heavy discharge but the leg trickle wasn't usual so I got up & very quickly had obvious fluid loss in a smallish gush. This happened a few times and I had to use pads to prevent puddles!! Contractions started soon afterwards but were very stop-start so I was in and out of hospital for several days with more episodes of water loss before labour got going three days later.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 16/08/2021 20:25

I lost my plug initially then they just trickled was ages before I had a bit more of a gush and it was quite uncomfy. Then once he was born there was tonnes came out he was very clean, I had polyhydraminous so had tonnes anyway but it just kept coming. Other 3 babies waters only went when delivered or were broken for me

Boombadoom · 16/08/2021 20:39

I was lying on a hospital bed, and went to get up to ask to be discharged (waiting for induction but no beds on labour ward) and as I moved I felt what I can only like to an elastic band popping inside me and a gush of fluid.

jamsandwich1 · 24/08/2021 19:53

With DS they started leaking really slowly whenever I got up and moved. Went into hospital for them to check if it was my waters as I wasn’t sure and as I got into the room to be examined and took my trousers off they gushed all over the floor. With DD they popped as I was pushing, about 5 mins before she was born. I thought it was diarrhoea as I just felt a warm sensation going all down the back of my legs and obviously felt like I needed a poo and I was apologising so much about all the mess!

shouldistop · 26/08/2021 18:34

First time I felt and heard a pop and there was a constant trickle after that.
Second time I was transitioning, feeling tonnes of pressure and the midwife accidentally broke them when she was examining me. I felt relief for a second then the contractions ramped up and I was in agony after that. The midwife also looked panicked as there was Meconium in my waters.

EishetChayil · 26/08/2021 21:13

Mine went with a sort of popping sound. I'd been pretty anxious beforehand, as the midwife was about to break them if they didn't break naturally. I'd had a non-consensual sweep done to me earlier in labour, and was feeling pretty traumatised, so didn't want her going up there with a hook, if at all possible!

Senorasurf · 26/08/2021 23:57

Reminded me of when you bend over and your trousers rip or you ladder your tights

AmazinglyGraceless · 27/08/2021 00:04

With dc1 they burst my waters manually and with dc2 they didn't go until I was pushing so I barely registered it.

With dc3 I was sitting up in a hospital bed and it kind of felt like a 'pop' deep inside, suddenly. It's the oddest, wrongest feeling because it felt like exactly what had happened - something's burst inside you - which despite knowing in pregnancy is normal, still feels totally wrong!

Then a massive gush of water, a huge amount. And after I stood up for the bed to be changed, it kept gushing for about 20 minutes, every time I moved position there would be more. Totally not like what you see on TV, much grosser and messier and more inconvenient!

Ifonlyidknownthen · 27/08/2021 00:12

Was stood inbetween contractions at the end of the end of the bed with dc2, and literally felt a pop sensation and water fell down my legs, like the movies I suppose. DC 1 had to be broken. Dc3 section.

shouldistop · 27/08/2021 07:02

I'm glad there are others who heard / felt a pop. When I told the midwives that they basically said I was talking rubbish

HoppingPavlova · 28/08/2021 07:56

Mine all happened well before babies were born and generally all well before labour, needing induction for most. One was in bed and I woke up as was wet and uncomfortable. Another I was watching tv sitting on couch, didn’t ‘feed’ anything as such, all were just doing everyday stuff. Didn’t have contractions start naturally with any, was always ultimately induced after waiting and nothing happening for fear of infection. So pretty much had the joy of cleaning up the mess at home before going to hospital. It doesn’t stop either, your body keeps producing it and wearing pads or indeed incontinence pants (yep, thought I’d do this from second one) did jack shit. Even after the initial waterfall and enormous puddle any sort of pad would get soaked within minutes. I then progressed onto making sure I had an enormous pile of disposable bed mats (might have sniffled them from my hospital), and just sat on them or tried to secure them nappy style if I walked around.

HelloDulling · 28/08/2021 08:01

With DD, have been having contractions about 12 hours, but was standing up doing the ironing when they went. No pop, and no torrent of fluid.

With DS, I woke up at 4am in a puddle.

spicychickenwing · 28/08/2021 08:38

In advanced labour they popped. So much else going on not hugely aware of it. Because baby was so far down only the water infront of their head came out. The rest came out when baby was actually delivered.

Equalpayquery · 28/08/2021 08:46

I have had two spontaneous ruptures, both at full term. I didn’t know in advance either time. First time I was sat on the sofa and felt a sudden pop and a gush - I leapt up and saved the sofa but goodness that stuff is slippery!

Second time I was stood outside talking to a friend/neighbour about how although it was my due date there was no sign and I should probably just settle in for another couple of weeks. Then all of a sudden pop, but this was more of a fast trickle than a gush. They didn’t believe me at first, thought I was messing with them!

MagratGarlikInDisguise · 29/08/2021 09:30

We were at the hospital in the first part of labour trying to sleep as I wasn't dilated enough, heard a pop abd remember wondering where it came from as there were no balloons (!), then it whooshed out. Then the pain got seriously real so they took me seriously and ran the birth pool etc. 2 hours later, out he came!

SpikeDearheart · 29/08/2021 09:36

I have absolutely no idea when mine went! I know they were intact when I was examined by the midwife at 4 cm. DS was born 90 minutes later and I have literally no idea when they went, nor does DH, who was there the whole time and wasn't off his face on gas and air
