I have a son who is nearly 2, my labour with him was long - I wanted a homebirth and after 2 days of labour at home I was transferred to hospital, he was back to back and stuck. I then had an epidural and was taken to theatre, ended up with keilands forceps being used, I had an episiotomy and a 3rd degree tear. I remember being stitched for 45 minutes but didnt think anything of it - and I healed well.

Im now almost 6 months pregnant and at my booking in appointment the midwife mentioned that a c section may be discussed with me by my consultant further on in the pregnancy but that there was no reason why I shouldnt be able to have my baby vaginally at home as I wanted.

My second appointment was with a different midwife who wasnt supportive at all and said I should have a c section or end up faecal incontinant. This was a huge shock. I asked if that would mean further c sections with subsequent children etc and she said why would I want to try a vaginal after having a c section?! She wasnt friendly and couldnt get me out of her office soon enough it felt. She was brushing off my comments and questions and made me feel that my even thinking of trying vaginally makes me crap

I was upset and met with the midwife 'manager' from my hospital who said there was no reason why I couldnt have baby at home etc and she would make an appointment to see my consultant sooner.

I saw my consultant who said there was a 10% of another 3rd degree tear, and a slight chance within that 10% of further complications, so basically the odds were looking ok. She also said that there was nothing to suggest that this baby would get stuck (while the midwife said the baby prob would) and that if anything the labour would be longer as my uterus would know what its doing etc so to speak! She also said that now we 'know' that a baby CAN pass through my pelvis so that shouldnt be a worry. She said that I prob wouldnt be offered a c section either due to how well Id healed etc.

I left feeling a bit better but what the other midwife said has stuck with me. Im not enjoying this pregnancy much because Im so worried and I dont know what to do for the best. My partner says that if the consultant was worried about that trauma again then she wouldve said, nevermind agree to support me with a home birth and I guess hes right but it still bothers me. Ive changed midwives so I dont have to worry about her turning up on the big day and causing me stress - Im sure shes a nice person but she didnt offer the support I needed.

I know a lot can change between now and then but I just dont know what to do. I dont personally see that opting/pushing to get a c section and having major surgery is better for me than the slight risk of a tear. If I have to have a c section then fair enough but I dont want to pick that option. I sometimes think that either way I'll feel like Ive made the wrong decision. I dont live near family so would have to look after my 2 year old and a newborn by myself after the 2 weeks paternity leave and that causes concern if Ive just had surgery.

I want to try for vaginally at home but does that make me selfish?

Sorry for the long post but Im all over the place. x

Right I am really getting fed up now lol Im so amazingly achey and bored with needing to pee all the time! Had a good walk around town this morning but all that did was tire me out

Fingers crossed its not too much longer now, if anyone else texts me asking if Ive had the baby yet I think I'll scream!

turn your phone off or let A/P pick up , message saying, 'no, i;ve not had trhe baby yet, yes i am p*ssed off and yes, i;ll call you when i have given birth!'

if you have to be induced then you will cross that bridge when you come to it

sweep at 41 + weeks usually offered before full induction

By my dates Im 41 weeks today, tomorrow by theirs. I have a midwife appointment this morning so will ask for a sweep, Im a bit worried though

I hope its not the midwife that Im not very keen on.. il just have to grit my teeth and get on with it I guess.

Are they very uncomfortable?!

OP posts:
Lulumama · 28/03/2008 08:53

depends on the positions and consistency of the cervix and how thorough the MW is !

if you are soft and anterior, it should not be more than mildly uncomfy

concnetrate on breathing deeply and don;t clench your fists or teeth whilst it is happening.

dillinger · 28/03/2008 09:06

Ok thanks. Think of me at 9.50!

I think I mightve been having a show for the past week or so, only I didnt realise as with ds everything came away in a lump (soz tmi)and it was pretty obvious! I read on another thread that it can seem 'snotty' in appearance so maybe thats in my favour. x

OP posts:
dillinger · 28/03/2008 10:57

Well the midwife didnt do a sweep because of the Polyhydramnios, which is fair enough. I have to see another consultant on weds to discuss being induced as they wont let me go past 42 weeks at all, they may even want it to happen a day or so sooner, apparently.

Was hoping I might be labouring by now but hey ho, I think I feel more at ease with the fact that baby MIGHT come any time, but also with the talk of induction an end is finally in sight!

Bit worried about the induction process itself, I think I'll try the gel and if theres then talk of them putting me on that drip then I will opt for an epidural straight away. Obv I cant be definate on that until the time but it sounds like being 'made' to contract is more painful than contracting of your own accord, iyswim. Im going to be panicky enough in hosp as it is.

I might regret not trying, and that worries me as it took a while to get over ds' birth but Im trying to tell myself that its my mothering that defines that part of me, more than how my children were born. I cant have the birth that I originally wanted, so now I just want to make things as best I can.

OP posts:
VictorianSqualor · 28/03/2008 11:09

I don't know how true this is but I was told that the drip is better than the gel because it can be turned of, whereas they can't exactly wipe the gel off iyswim.

Good Luck

Also nothing wrong with going past 42 weeks if your placental function is checked often enough.

They like to induce because they think the placenta may stopw orking and baby will suffer but there is no reason to worry if it's still working fine.

Also are your dates spot on? My scan coincided perfectly with my LMP dates so I had no leeway but you may have if they didn't.

Sorry if I've repeated anything already said!

dillinger · 28/03/2008 11:34

Thanks for your post! Im pretty sure they only have my dates out by one day as I know when I concieved, so pretty much bang on!

Ahh ok I thought that the gel wouldnt be as 'crazy' as a drip, iyswim! So if Im screaming merry hell would they turn the drip down/whatever?

Maybe if the gel is awful I'll go for the epidural then lol

Think Im going to have to try to get things going this weekend.

OP posts:
Lulumama · 28/03/2008 14:21

the gel ripens and softens the cervix and is usually done if the cervix is not open enough for ARM. once ARM can be done, you are moved to delivery and have your waters broken and given a drip if necessary to get ctx going or make them stronger.. the drip can give you incredibly strong and frequent ctx very quickly

hpoefully you will labour yourself before any of that is necessary

even if you are induced you can be mobile, once you have had the gel and some monitoring, you can walk and stay mobile...

dillinger · 28/03/2008 14:53

Yeah its that drip part that freaks me out. Im hoping if I do go in for induction that having my waters broken will be enough to get things going. Had a few twinges a moment ago but again nothing Think I had more of an obv show earlier though, more like egg white consistency.

So Id get some time to be mobile before any drip talk? Cos that might do it. Fingers crossed that the talk of being induced will set things off!

Gonna have to be curry and sex tonight then, and then more over the weekend I guess Ive never felt more unattractive than during that lol anyway needs must!

Send me some labour vibes please!!

sending lots of vibes!

if you are dilated enough for ARM, then that is a good start... don;t focus on the negative if you can help it

Woken up by contractions at 4.15am, found it nigh on impossible to lie back down as it made things really painful but managed to doze on and off til about 6am when I decided to get up. Had quite a show too.

Contractions seemed to be pretty regular straight away - one coming less than every 10 mins, and lasting 30/40 seconds. They seem to be stronger now but not lasting any longer than that, and my notes say to go in when theyre lasting more than a minute so I guess I need to hang on.

Part of me thinks I should phone delivery suite but I dont think its necessary to go in while Im coping and waters are intact.

Should I go for a walk or something in a bit and see if that brings things on a bit better? Ive got a feeling the contractions are going to stop for some reason xx

OP posts:
Lulumama · 29/03/2008 09:30

sounds good ! you are right to hang on before going in, but if they stay regular, worth calling delivery suite to let them now

also , beware that things can kick off a lot quicker, so labour can change quite quickly second time, so don;t let DH go too far today !

did you have a bloody show?

dillinger · 29/03/2008 09:44

The contractions are being pretty iffy at the moment, feeling strong but the time between them varies. Should I just phone anyway so they know I might be in soon?

The show was like egg white again but more of it, not really any colour to it.

Dp had something to do quickly this morning so I told him to go get on with it before things really kick off! Im expecting him back any minute.

OP posts:
dillinger · 29/03/2008 09:54

Right just phoned up and spoke to someone (sounded very nice and although I know I prob wont have her its made me feel a bit more at ease about going in), she said it all sounds good and to go in (phoning first) when Ive been having contractions every 3/4 minutes for a couple of hours, or obv if my waters go.

Weathers looking well grim Im not sure I want to walk anywhere lol

OP posts:
Lulumama · 29/03/2008 09:55

the strength and length of the ctx is good indicators.... keep us posted!

Boobalina · 29/03/2008 10:00

Hey Dillinger - how very exciting - you are going to meet you LO very very soon!!!

I'd jsut remember that 2nd babies can come along very quickly with dilation being more efficient so as soon as they come every 5 mins I would get your self ready to go to hospital - so you dont get caught short and end up in the local paper for having a baby in the car!

Dont be scared about the hopsital - they all want whats best for you and baby and remember this.... the symptoms of Fear are exactly the same as EXCITEMENT! Turn it around and keep telling yourself you are really excited about meeting LO! It worked for me with my 2nd one

Good luck xx

dillinger · 29/03/2008 10:11

Thankyou for your lovely post Boobalina. I hope I do have a quicker labour this time and that everything goes smoothly!

I will definately try and feel excitement rather than fear, I know I have to keep positive in order to keep some kind of control.

Was really looking forward to a curry tonight, and wanted to get some olives today..thats obv whats kicked everything off lol

OP posts:
Boobalina · 29/03/2008 10:46

It will all be cool as it is literally a means to an end and then a whole new begining - then in 6 months time you'll be posting things like me on AIBU!

If you are induced / have a drip / have a c-setion - so be it, it will be for the right reason for you and your babies health and safety. You will never be a failure regardless of the outcome. You will be a mum of two ;)

babe, the pains are not going away when you lie down, and that means they are the sort of pains you want !!!

you don;t need an epidural yet. trust me

take a bath, it will give you a bit of a rest, take some paracetomal if you want to. sit on your birth ball, get your DP to massage your back , lower back or shoulder to keep you relaxed

the pain is bearable, or you would not be in the zone of being able to post on MN!! IFYSWIM

by all means go in and be seen, but unless you are 3 - 4 cm you won;t get admitted to labour ward and get an epidural

TENS machine?
