do hindwaters smell sweet? Or did I p*ss myself?!

Woke up with my pyjamas quite wet this morning. Put on a pad and it was only slightly damp but smelled really sweet (?!). Phoned the hospital and went in, they said my waters hadn't gone and it could have been wee. But wee doesn't smell sweet - surely it couldn't have been wee. I'm only 35 weeks so it's not really time yet but was just wondering if anyone knows what this could be down to?

sweet....could be a hindwater leak......

3Ddonut · 06/11/2007 16:02

I thought that the waters did smell sweet tbh, but if you've been checked over I wouldn't worry too much.

Lulumama · 06/11/2007 16:02

are you still leaking? also you can stop the flow of wee, but not of amniotic fluid

Lulumama · 06/11/2007 16:03

i was told my waters had not leaked and i had wet myself, but i knew i had not ! i had felt something 'go' and it leaked for hours after a small gush that wet my trousers .. i had my daughter 48 hours later

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:09

oh my goodness lulumama! I am almost certain it's not wee because I don't usually leak so why would I suddenly start?

It's so litle fluid though now I'm not sure it's anything. Do they check for hind as well as forewaters when they examine you (they put in a speculum and asked me to cough to see if any fluid came out which it didn't)?

Dr. also said waters didn't usually smell sweet which I thought they did - mind you she also said the head wasn't engaged after the m/w had said it was 4/5 so who knows what to believe...

if it IS urine then it will def smell after a while..(like you dont know that?)

my waters dribbled out for three days at 38 weeks...they smelt almost pleasant!...and lord knows i KEPT sniffing to check

good luck x

ManchesterMummy · 06/11/2007 16:11

I got told exactly the same thing - that I had wet myself (at 40+4) and "that sometimes happens in pregnancy" (!). Had my daughter 15 hours later... And the waters that were leaking out of me definitely were not wee!

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:12

eek, better get my hospital bag ready then...

they are checking for fluid pooling in the vagina i think , and if the baby is partially engaged, then it can stop hind waters from coming .. my baby was 3/5 engaged ( 2/5 palp ) when this happened, but i was 39 + when it happened

just keep an eye on things, you;ll know if it is wee, by smell and colour. waters can be almost pink tinged

anything greeny or dark needs checking out again asap !

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:13

lol at the sniffing beansonetoast - i told the mw and doc I had sniffed it and they both looked faintly disgusted - well what did they expect me to do?!

I had a little gush which didn't really smell of anything but definitely wasn't urine and then a few more which happened each time I stood up. Went to hospital, they checked me and said no my waters hadn't broken. I went home, it happened again, this time with a show and that evening contractions started (I won't tell you how long it was until dd was born because it was a lllllllllloooooong time but she arrived safe and sound nonetheless!)

ManchesterMummy · 06/11/2007 16:15

Skidaddle - I got my DH to smell mine too (bless)!!! Surely this is the only time in your life when it's acceptable to do so...!

Good luck!

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/11/2007 16:15

beansontoast - snap ! at 38 weeks something kind of went and there was water which I thought might be wee and kept sniffing it ! it leaked out for another 3 days then ds was born ! good luck skiddadle

DANCESwithHughJackman · 06/11/2007 16:15

I don't know why they looked disgusted, when I went to be checked the first time the mw made me take out the clean pad I had just soaked and she smelt it!

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:22

well quite DANCES - I had to leave mine on the side in the loo so the mw could do whatever she wanted with it - as far as I know she might have tasted it

When they broke my waters at the hospital I was quite embarrassed as not only was there a HUGE amount (even the midwife commented) but it smelt very distinctly of.......semen . I have been told since this is common , thankfully. Good Luck anyway!!

claireybraxtonhicks · 06/11/2007 16:28

Hmm my friend had a similar thing and the head had moved down so was kind of plugging the waters in, every now and then she'd get a bit more come out.

Have I scared you yet?!

Ooh how exciting, maybe we'll soon have a december baby!

VanillaPumpkin · 06/11/2007 16:28

I leaked quite a bit before dd1 was born and the midwife said my waters hadn't broken (doing that coughing test ) but said it could be part of my show. In which case I had a show for 12 hours, then labour started and dd1 arrived 12 hours later .
I don't think you would suddenly start leaking wee when you were asleep. I leaked when pregnant with dd2 when I coughed. It was a shock, but I knew all about it.
Do your pelvic floor exercises everyone.

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:31

semen vanillapumpkin - was that after trying the allegedly most effective way to bring on labour?

OP posts:
VanillaPumpkin · 06/11/2007 16:36

Lol, no! In a way I wish we had tried that as I was 9 days over by then. I have always suspected that is what the midwife thought and glad her shift ended shortly after she broke my waters (Plus she was a cow actually).

VanillaPumpkin · 06/11/2007 16:37

Oh gosh is no-one going to agree with me now?? . Maybe I am a weirdo after all.

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:43

well all I can say vanilla is that mine smelled sweet, almost virginal - draw your own conclusions

OP posts:
VanillaPumpkin · 06/11/2007 16:44

Well virginal is something you can't claim to be at the moment .

Jbck · 06/11/2007 16:52

Nearly p*ssed myself reading thread Skidaddle, 'she might have tasted it'. I lost hindwaters too & was quite annoyed that m/w thought I, a grown woman, couldn't tell the difference between wetting myself & unusual fluids leaking out of me. I had to go in & get checked & was actually having mild contractions for a few hours but they stopped, baby plugged it back up & I ended up induced at 10 days over. Fingers crossed you're actually on the way.

Lulumama · 06/11/2007 16:53

there is a spermy smell when the placenta is delivered, i have found
