Woke up with my pyjamas quite wet this morning. Put on a pad and it was only slightly damp but smelled really sweet (?!). Phoned the hospital and went in, they said my waters hadn't gone and it could have been wee. But wee doesn't smell sweet - surely it couldn't have been wee. I'm only 35 weeks so it's not really time yet but was just wondering if anyone knows what this could be down to?

that is to make vanillapumpkin feel better!

skidaddle · 06/11/2007 16:57

that's actually quite reassurring Jbck as I'm only 35 weeks so would rather hang on a bit longer if poss - how many weeks were you when you started leaking?

vanilla - I take your point

Thank you Lulu!!! Phew!

I always thin amniotic fluid smells sweet, heard other m/ws say it smells like sperm. I'm always sniffing womens' pads

SmellyMurkySky · 06/11/2007 19:35

skiddadle, you may have left it the loo for the MW to test the pH. IIRC urine is very alkali and amniotic fluid is neutral.

VanillaPumpkin · 06/11/2007 20:07

Aha, thank you Stripey!

Jbck · 06/11/2007 20:25

skidaddle I was about 38 weeks iirc.
I had just been to the loo, no previous problems with leaking wee during pg & it was an odd sensation. It definitely didn't smell like urine either. Baby had been 2/5 engaged at ante-natal earlier that week & was 4/5 when I was examined that night so m/w at hospital reckoned it was her movement and she'd plugged it back up. I hadn't heard of hind waters till then.
Forgot you'd said you were only 35 weeks, keep your legs crossed then

skiddadle, don't want to alarm you but...

At 35.5 weeks I woke up with back ache and then leaked fluid as I walked across bedroom floor. I didn't think it smelt like wee so rang MWs at local (small) hospital, who advised going to nearest big hospital for assessment. Spent morning in hospital being monitored, and had internal exam. At 12 noon was told it was not labour, there were no signs of contractions, cervix was totally closed, the pain was due to a bladder infection (which I was taking ABs for) and I should go home, take some paracetamol, and rest.

I did this, and a couple of hours or so later was feeling worse and told DH I wanted to go back. Thankfully we decided to take hospital bag in case as by the time we got to the hospital I was screaming very loudly every 5 minutes! I was sent straight to delivery and gave birth to my 7lb (!) DD 2 hours later, with no pain relief, just a heck of a lot of screaming.

Thankfully DD was fine, though needed 2 days in SCBU to sort out blood levels (too high concentration of red cells) and needed treatment for jaundice. but she is now a healthy 5 month old full of big smiles.

How are you Skidaddle?? Hope all OK today.

My DH has said that his semen obviously smells sweet .

skidaddle · 07/11/2007 13:40

I'm OK thanks vanilla - I actually think it might have been wee now as I have this awful cough and I think that during the night when I cough my pelvic floor muscles aren't quite awake enough to do their job resulting in a bit of leakage

Am on ABs for the cough now and no more fluid/pain so think the doc might have been right after all - how annoying! Or else it was hind waters but head or whatever has stopped the flow - either way all now seems fine..

vanilla - all men seem to be under the illusion that THEIR semen smells and tastes divine - mine thinks his smells of strawberries

Lol.
I am glad you are ok anyway. I found having a cough a bridge too far for my pelvic floor. Was a nightmare. Good luck over the next five weeks anyway .

nowbringussomeJammypudding · 07/11/2007 15:14

Yes, glad you're OK skidaddle - had to pop back to check. Hope all goes well when the time comes

yetihed · 09/11/2007 18:56

hi Skidaddle-

Don't want to worry you, but if you're not sure you may want to kick up a fuss, maybe go to your midwife?

I had something similar when I was 40+8 and was sent away from hospita. When I gave birth 3 days later, my amniotic sac had a massive infection and we had to be on intravenous anti biotics for 5 days.

This probably won't happen to you, even if your waters have broken, but I feel duty bound to infomr you so you know it's important to check if you are worried.

skidaddle · 12/11/2007 10:59

Thanks yetihead - had a appt with the consultant this morning and fluid and everything else looks fine. I will probably go two weeks over now after all that...
