If you've given birth at least twice, how long did each take? Was the second much faster?

I've heard that childbirth usually takes longer the first time. I've been trying to find stats about it but the only thing I could find is that on average the first time is 8 hours and subsequent times it's 5 hours. That seems short to me but I think it is only counted as "active labour" from 4cm dilation... so you could be in early labour for hours before getting to 4cm and the official count starts.

Anyway if you have given birth at least twice please could you tell me how long it took from start to finish each time?

With DC1 it was about 10 hours from the very first twinge to his birth, I have no idea at what point I was 4cm though. I am pregnant with DC2 and wondering how fast it might be this time...

I laboured very quickly so my first was 4 hours 50 minutes and my second 1 hour 30 minutes. The next two were delivered by CS but not due to speed of labour.

tiredanddangerous · 14/03/2020 16:50

My first was 6 hours from first twinge to birth, second was 3 hours. I remember my midwife telling me that second labour is generally half the time of the first, and in my case she was right!

BoswellsBollocks · 14/03/2020 16:50

DS1 from first twinge to birth was 44 hrs, from 4cm I think it was 12 hours.

DS2 was 10hrs from first twinge,

IndecentFeminist · 14/03/2020 16:51

#1 27 hrs, forceps
#2 1.5 hrs
#3 4 hrs

BoswellsBollocks · 14/03/2020 16:51

Posted too soon,

5 hrs from 4cm I think

yadayadayesokay · 14/03/2020 16:54

DD1 36 hours (was stuck)
DD2 5 hours

OkPedro · 14/03/2020 16:55

DD is 11 from first twinge to giving birth was 24 hours. Active labour 12 hours.
DS is 8 first twinge to giving birth 5 hours. I went from 1cm to 10 in 30 minutes! It was too fast and I panicked. I’d only had the epidural and then had the urge to push

527040minutes · 14/03/2020 16:55

DS1 was 17 hours
DS2 was 1 hour 15 mins

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 14/03/2020 16:56

All are 1st contraction to holding baby.

DS- 14 hours
DD- 14 hours
DD - 3 hours.

sprite25 · 14/03/2020 17:02

DD nearly 24 hours
DS 5 hours
Next baby is expected any day now so hopefully another quick one

"I remember my midwife telling me that second labour is generally half the time of the first"
Interesting! So by that theory mine could be about 5 hours... we shall see.

Indecent and 527040 DC2 was a lot faster than DC1 for you then! Presumably more straight forward too??

Those of you who laboured for 1h30 or less, did you go straight to the hospital as soon as it started?

I would worry about giving birth in the car Confused

Dc1 31hrs
Dc2 38hrs

Neednewwellies · 14/03/2020 17:06

No1 about 36h
No2 2h 16mins
No3 10h (worst birth)

Eeyoresstickhouse · 14/03/2020 17:07

1 - 6 hours
2 - 1 hour 42 minutes.

mnahmnah · 14/03/2020 17:08

Mine were both pretty much the same. 12 hours contracting at home, then 10/9 hours respectively in active labour

Aquamarine1029 · 14/03/2020 17:09

First, waters broke, no contractions yet then born 4 hours later.I

Second, waters broke, no contractions yet then born 1.5 hours later.

Neednewwellies · 14/03/2020 17:09

No2 I got to hospital about 30mins before the birth. I was 8cm on arrival. Pushing stage was dramatically quicker. (That stage was also quicker 3rd time despite ridiculously long latent labour)

chocolicious · 14/03/2020 17:10

First labour from waters breaking(no contractions felt yet) to DC being born was 2 hrs 13 minutes.
Second labour was similar at 2hrs 2 minutes.
No pain relief with either birth.

Runningonempty84 · 14/03/2020 17:11

  1. around 24 hours
  2. just over an hour

DD was nearly born in a hospital corridor. I hadn't wanted to go in, as thought I'd be going for hours and hours like the first time Blush

nameymcnamechangeagain · 14/03/2020 17:11

I’ve had 3, mine got quicker each time but also more painful!!

Verily1 · 14/03/2020 17:12

First was normal length- 12hoirs from established to birth. Second was 20 mins!

BertieBotts · 14/03/2020 17:12

I laboured very slowly. First was around 11pm Friday to 7am Sunday. So 32 hours. Second was around 10am Sunday, born at 3am Monday. So around 17 hours.

Active stage with DC1 around 8 hours, active stage with DC2 1-3 hours (I honestly don't know what time it was I went from 1-6cm in about 20 minutes)

steppemum · 14/03/2020 17:13

dc 1 - bloody days long, I can't remember, 2 days or more.

dc 2 - about 4 hours

dc 3 - 1.5 hours

BertieBotts · 14/03/2020 17:13

I feel like I would cope with labour so much better if it was only 8 hours or so Confused

Panicmode1 · 14/03/2020 17:14

#1 - horrendous 36 hour labour with every intervention going (bar a C/S!). Born on his due date.
#2 - about 6 hours, born day before due date
#3 - about 3 hours, born day after due date
#4 - mildly twingy all day, thought it was Braxton Hicks because it was 2 weeks before his due date. I had 1 almighty contraction at 6pm, raced to hospital (10 mins away) because felt ready and delivered him 6 minutes after arriving at the delivery suite door. The midwife didn't even have time to get a delivery pack!
