Jab at home after elected c section?

After my emergency c section I got an infection so was in hospital for a week then when I got home I had to have a jab in my stomach daily for a week. I think it was to avoid blood clotting. I'm calling it a jab because it wasn't a needle that I had to find a specific vein to inject into.

I may have an elective c section for second pregnancy and obviously this is not a deal breaker but just wondered if having a jab daily is something that I'll have to have again. Or was it to do with the infection rather than c section itself?

I think you get them regardless, the only difference is possibly the duration you need to inject yourself for.

I've had 2 emergency sections but my consultant definitely brought them up ante-natally when I was trying to book an elective for dc2.

They are to prevent blood clots / DVT post surgery in particular but some women who give birth vaginally have them because of other risk factors for DVT such as smoking, age, bmi, family history etc. In our trust everybody has them post c-section, how long for will depend on other risk factors

Fragmin injections. I had to have it for 10 days after both sections (1 emc and 1 elective) to prevent clotting

Yep, pretty standard to have. Each time I had them for under a week, think it was five days.

I had them for six weeks because we were in hospital for more than three days so the risk of clots is higher, normally it's just ten days after a section.

I can't believe they didn't explain to you what Clexane was or why you needed it.

You will need it again for every c section, it prevents blood clots.

I had clexain injections after each section as had them for 10ndays each

I had them after a vaginal birth, due to my bmi. Seem to be common with c sections around here.

Yes, Clexane for 2 weeks post c section, both times. I got a little sharps bin to take home and dispose of at my GP’s.

Yes I had these for six weeks after my section due to having a huge blood loss and subsequent transfusion.

I was so happy to see the back of them!

I didn't have them on my first two sections but I did on my last. My other DC were absolutely fascinated by me giving myself the injections

Yes - two ELCS here and had to have Fragmin for ten days both times. I made sure that I got the midwife to show me how to do them properly this time and that helped a lot.

Yes - I had emergency c-section a couple of months ago and had to do six weeks of fragmin injections. Midwife told me you either get prescribed 10 days or 6 weeks, nothing in between, and I had the 6 weeks due to blood transfusions and longer stay in hospital. I hated them (found them the worst part of recovery) but their purpose is to keep you well and alive so I just made myself do them everyday.

@gallgal maybe they did explain it to me. But I was in so much pain due to the infection and baby only slept for a maximum of 1 hour at a time. I was like a zombie not even a walking zombie but a hombling one!

I had them after both of my vaginal births due to varicose veins. No fun but needed.

@birdisland hmm maybe it was just 10 days then as it definitely wasnt 6 weeks. I've just worked out I must have been in hospital for 6 days after the c section. (3 before) so maybe I did just have the injections for 4 more days. They were loooong days and even longer nights with all the night feeds.

I remember a noticeable difference when I was prescribed iron tablets before that I literally slept when baby slept then once I was on them i slept about 4/5 hours at night inbetween feeds then tried desperately to sleep more in the day but just couldnt.

Anyway I just want to do everything I can to avoid getting an infection following birth so that's why I'm opting for elected c section.

If my waters break before elected c section I'll opt for c section. As I believe the reason why i got infected was due to the long time inbetween waters breaking and giving birth. I had like 4 failed inductions.

I'm still undecided on what to do if i go into labour without waters breaking first.

I had to inject myself daily for about ten days at home after my second CS, didn’t need this after my first CS though. I also had a little sharps bin and took it to the GP surgery when I was done.

I had the Fragmin injections for 10 days after each of my sections; 1 emergency 1 planned.
They were the worst bit of the recovery. Only a tiny injection and I do 4 Insulin injections everyday so I shouldn't have found it difficult but they really sting.

A tip is you can do them in your tummy instead of thighs and it hurts a bit less but I was only told that by the midwife when I was coming to the end of the course the second time around.

I'm currently pregnant with baby no4 never had them before and I've had c section and a transfusion after c section and both vbac yet this pregnancy they started me on them last week at 28 weeks I do one injection a day until 6 weeks after birth

I had to have them for 6 weeks 2 a day! Omg I hated them .. it was due to my age I had to have them after my section.

I had them after my first csection but not my second. With my first, I was in hospital for 5 days and couldn't stand up straight for 2 of them (it turned out that the dressing was pulling my wound apart! Ouch!) I was up and about very quickly with my second though. They sent me home after less than 24 hours.

I had 4 sections (1 emergency, 3 'elective' i wasn't given a choice though)

Had to do it every time.
It wasn't an issue.
