Sex to bring on labour?

Hello! Just waiting on a spicy curry to be delivered, and because I’m dubious about whether that will do anything to bring on labour...has anyone actually gone in to labour shortly after doing the deed or is it a myth? I want a few tales to be able to tell my other half because the dopey bugger is genuinely afraid he’ll poke his unborn child in the face if we do the deed! 😂

Because if she does go into labour soon after, then she’ll be going to the hospital with semen leaking out of her vagina. Confused
Is it fine these days to show your spermy bits to a midwife or a consulant??

Chienrouge · 03/02/2018 21:01

The whole point is that the semen induces labour, so using a condom would defeat the object!

Lj8893 · 03/02/2018 21:02

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at it, I've seen a lot worse!

It's the semen that may help her go into labour so it's a bit useless with a condom!

Chienrouge · 03/02/2018 21:03

Oh and I had a bath in early labour with both mine, so no need to show ‘spermy bits’ to anyone. Not that it matters, midwives and Dr’s see plenty of bodily fluids.

The only pregnancy when I wasn't have regular sex was the only one I went overdue in.

FusionChefGeoff · 03/02/2018 21:23

Yup - DD was 4 days over so we had sex et voila - her amazing birth followed the next day.

There is scientific evidence to show prostaglandins can bring on cramping if sperm gets into the cervix after sex. I have experienced this- really extreme cramping post shag- spoke to a gynae friend who explained it was the spunk that most of the time the "load" isn't shot into/at cervix so it's quite rare.

Stands to reason if you are pregnant and near term the same reaction can occur. Tell DH to aim for your cervix!

Having sex to induce labour is like eating poppies to induce a morphine high. There's some extrapolated scientific theory misapplied, plus a healthy dose of desperation and some coincidence. Apparently half of of women believe the myth. It's still a myth though. Same as all the craving x means a girl and heartburn = hair stuff. Pregnancy and labour are exciting unknowns, it's no wonder we try and control it all.

My partner made a joke once that sex during pregnancy is how kids get dimples - never stopped him though. If you're desperate to get the baby out, go for it. Anythings worth a try.

Uhohmummy · 04/02/2018 11:53

It didn’t work for me last night! Although I did lose some more of my mucous plug this morning (thought I’d lost it all 3 days ago).
Currently eating dates, bouncing on my ball and drinking raspberry leaf tea... I’m going to try again tonight!

Rikalaily · 04/02/2018 15:12

Has worked all 5 times for me... It's not just sex though, you need lots of orgasms Grin

TLH0307 · 05/02/2018 09:09

Well I’m still here ladies, the size of a house and still very much pregnant 😂 Ah well, a shag is a shag eh! 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

How far along are you? Normal gestation is 37-42 weeks with most first time babies coming after 40 weeks. You can't induce labour and I always think the arrangements of antenatal care around the 40 week date does make it feel like the baby is "late" when it isn't. In France, the mythical "due date" is 41 weeks.

At 40+ weeks I think you have a licence to do what makes you happy and comfortable and let biology and baby do the rest.

SkaterGrrrrl · 09/02/2018 23:50

We got DD out the same way we got her in. Made love at night, woke up in morning in labour.

titsandbits · 09/02/2018 23:56

So it's normal after sex to have a sperm leakage? Thank goodness! I though I was a weirdo @Lj8893
