How long did you stay in hospital after a c-section?

Hi ladies,

I have opted for an elective c-section because I am absolutely terrified of giving birth, the thought has been keeping me up at night and giving me nightmares for about two months! I'm just wondering how long I will be in hospital for after? It would be great to know how long other ladies have been kept in for. I am 24 and healthy in most respects, unfortunately just not mentally strong enough to give birth!

Would appreiciate any answers the mumsnetters could offer

I stayed less than 24 hours. The procedure itself was fantastic. But after care was nonexistent so I decided I could care for myself better at home. They wanted me to stay three days.

24 hours , not an elective

I would have gone home sooner but had to wait for paediatrician to check the baby. I was desperate to get home for some food and drink.

Although actually one of them included the night I was in labour so technically only 2 I suppose.

My ELCS was great, op done at 2pm on the Thursday and I was out at 9am on the Saturday. It's not an easy experience - any way you give birth (vaginal or by c-section) is scary and recovery can be very difficult but I found it to be a great experience.

Went in Monday Am Had section on Monday PM out wed PM. Honestly I would have been better off staying in another night but that wasn't really an option.

I had an emergency c section and went home 24 hours later at my insistence. In hind sight I might have stayed another night as I was exhausted and getting out of my bed etc was agony. However I had been in for four days and couldn't wait to get out.
I had a particularly long and hard labour though so maybe that was why it took me a while to recover.

ELCS. Was going to go home after 30 hours but an (unrelated to the CS) complication meant that I had to stay for longer.

Had an EMCS and was in two nights. I lost a lot of blood so was on whatever level of care is higher than just standard. I didn't need a transfusion in the end but they thought I might. Technically I was three nights but one of those I was in labour all of it 😄

Two nights. Went in at 7am on Wednesday, had baby at 1pm, discharged at 5pm on Friday. Could have left a lot earlier on the Friday but it seems to take ages to get discharged from our hospital.

2nd CS and even though I knew to get up and move around as quickly as I could, I wouldn't have been ready to leave on the Thursday. If only because the hospital had the lovely Oramorph Grin Actually I think my blood pressure buggered around a bit on Wednesday night which delayed everything slightly.

My advice would be not to rush it. Go when you want to, but don't push yourself and if you think you need the stronger drugs to help you recover then stay and take them. But fingers crossed it will only be a night or two.

24 hours, then pushing the pram through the snow taking older son to school at 10 days.
Really quick recovery. ( no choice, zero help from any one as dh had gone back to work)

Two nights but then lots of rest at home, where I did bare min for another couple of nights. I learnt the hard way as first was emcs and tried to do too much to quickly got hurt. Second was planned c-sec and I recovered much better as I allowed myself much more time and asked for help! Good luck.

It depends on how it all goes, how well you recover and many other factors.

With ds1, I was in hospital for 1 week before my ELCS and 1 week after (in hospital before as a precautionary measure because he was transverse with the cord down and I was living quite a distance from the nearest hospital, so they made me come in at 38 weeks). Recovery was very painful afterwards. I lost a litre of blood during the op and was very anaemic, breastfeeding was difficult to establish, I'm rhesus negative and ds1's (positive) blood mixed with mine at birth, so they had to give lots of anti-D and do blood tests etc, hence a long stay after.

With ds2 I left the same hospital 2 days after my elcs. On the other hand, I was more realistic as to what to expect, went in better prepared (take support knickers so you don't get the "my insides are falling out" effect when you try to walk) and I lost a lot less blood.

I'd say be realistic about what you will or won't be able to do afterwards. Expect to need a lot of help at home and expect to be on regular painkillers for a couple of weeks aftewards.

Had an EMCS at 1am on Friday and was home Saturday afternoon, so about 40 hours.

I had an emergency section on the Sunday (did already have one planned but went into labour), was discharged on the Wednesday. They said I could have gone home on the Tuesday but I wasn't ready as I had a big bleed after the section and needed the recovery time.

Admitted to hospital for induction Monday lunchtime (failed and had EMCS very late that night), sent home Thursday night around 8pm as had to wait for paed clearance for DS. Had the option of staying again as it was so late and I kind of wanted to but figured I'd better go home at some stage!

I ended up in a private room in a public hospital through my insurance so that probably made it a better experience.

I am glad I didn't go home earlier, I was a FTM and appreciated the assistance of the midwives with helping to establish feeding and having that handle above the bed to help me sit up and get in and out was very good.

A friend last year had her baby on a Monday morning and was home about 24 hours later to a three level house and an active 4yo. That to me seems absolutely insane and not safe with such a serious injury! I cannot believe hospitals would send home someone who had just had other major surgery so soon yet childbirth is considered a completely different kettle of fish.

2 nights with both. Unlike others I had positive aftercare experience, got help with breastfeeding with no.1 and had a friendly roommate who asked me for help with breastfeeding when I had no.2. All meals cooked and served and cheese and crackers about 9.30 before bed. It nearly makes me want another... (or maybe a solo night on a hotel!!)

Was in for 5-6 days after an EMCS.

But baby had jaundice and was treated with phototherapy for that on the postnatal ward, so we were in for longer than normal because of that.
