best bit of childbirth

my ds is 6 months old on saturday and i've been thinking back to his birth. it was an emergency c-section which was a bit scary but i have the loveliest memory of the night following. i had him lying on me almost all night, bf him every now and then, with the lights all dim. i know i nearly lost him but there was something magical about that night and it is one of my best memories ever.

wondered what were the best bits of childbirth for other mners ?

err, looking back on last labour, the best bit of childbirth was when....

it actually happened

Maddison · 26/02/2007 21:43

Best part with DS1 was DH looking to see what he was, and exclaimed 'it's a XXXXX [DS1's name]'

The best part with DS2 was after I'd pushed his head and shoulders out, I pulled the rest of him out myself! Would gladly do it again this time

Olipop · 26/02/2007 21:47

The TOAST and MARMALADE at the end!!! Apologies if someone has beaten me to it..haven't read them all.

pookey · 26/02/2007 21:48

The best bit was when I had ds in my arms after he'd been cleaned up and dressed - having a big naked slimey yellow thing slung on my chest immediately after giving birth just freaked me out! Another best bit was looking at ds in his platic crib on the morning after he'd been born and him looking back at me with his huge blue eyes and then doing a baby bird chirp thing with his mouth. I had just read that mouthing meant they were hungry so I actually felt like I knew what I was supposed to do with him for the first time since he'd been born!

liath · 26/02/2007 21:52

Strangely, the best bit was the Ring of Fire as I'd been pushing for what felt like my whole life and the midwives had kept telling me I was doing it and I knew fine well they were LYING and that I was going to DIE - then suddenly I could feel dd's head there and knew that I was doing it after all.

Also, when I went to the post natal ward, they put dd into bed with me and I just gazed at her all night....that was lovely.

I found childbirth v difficult, went on ages first time, only a few hours but even more painful 2nd time.
Suppose best bit was sheer relief it was over and everything was alright.
Then the tea and toast - utter bliss!!!!!!!!!!
Then the realisation I didn't have constant heartburn any more.

WindUpBird · 27/02/2007 11:02

Just the relief that it was all over, the baby was out and alive, that it was a GIRL...I didn't get the 'rush of love' though! When she first opened her eyes about 12 hours later in the middle of the night, looking at me quizzically. Can't wait to do it all over again

NatalieJane · 27/02/2007 11:16

The best bit with DS1 was bringing him home (I know not exactly the best bit of the birth but I don't think there was a best bit of that one, except that he was healthy obviously)

The best bit of DS2's birth was when the silly cow of a midwife finally believed that there was indeed a head hanging out of me and I wasn't just making it up As he was crowning she asked if I wanted an epidural because I was making too much noise and it was going to be a while half an hour of labour and 4 minutes of pushing kind of made her see sense in the end.

best bit is the 'slithery' feeling when the body comes out in the contraction after the head emerging.

ahhhhh

and relax...

loopyredangel · 07/03/2007 22:04

Have to agree with NatalieJane, bringing my DS home was the best bit and I think the scariest bit, you get in the car and drive so slowly, we live by speed bumps - that was hilarious, we would stop and crawl over, I swear I saw a snail overtake! It's nice that you are getting the chance to look after your baby without feeling as though you are being watched!

Rhubarb · 07/03/2007 22:07

Best bit.

Getting the little bugger out of there!

MrsPhilipGlenister · 07/03/2007 22:08

The best bit of childbirth is the bit when it stops hurting!

pelvicflawed · 08/03/2007 16:24

The tea and toast ( I hate tea normally but this cup tasted wonderful!!!) and watching DH cuddle DS

barmybinky · 15/03/2007 01:58

Best bit.....

reaching between my legs and holding my daughter's face in my hands... stroking her hair.... before she had taken a breath of air into her lungs........... still 'breathing' from me, and knowing I had bloody well 'done it'

The best bit for me was bout 6 hours after. I was on my own with brand new dd and she just kept crying. I kept thinking I couldnt pick her up TOO much otherwise she will get clingy (!) so kept quietening her down and putting her back in her goldfish bowl only for her to cry again. It was driving me mad!

Eventually the lady 2 beds down came over and said ' its ok love. She just wants to be with her Mummy'. I sobbed for hours and sat and cuddled her all I wanted after that.

And do you know what? I still do now and shes 4 and I'll never stop!!

Crying now!

I think this thread needs to be bumped. I'm due in 8 days...good to read nice stories like these.

Lucylou21 · 13/04/2007 11:46

Being told I'd just gone to 5cm dilated when I went in and had my first internal. I must admit that I felt really smug as the pain hadn't been that bad.
Then, the moment they fired up the resuscitaire as I knew the baby was coming out very soon and it would all be over.
And the cup of tea & chocolate cake when I was all stitched up after tearing (ouch)
The overwhelming love came along a few days after.

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 13/04/2007 12:00

chocolate cake

sheepgomeep · 13/04/2007 14:10

Pushing the rest of there bodies out and the feelingof relief there was no more pain.

Having ds plonked directly on my tummy as soon as he came out.

Having the epidural for dd and no pain for an hour till I was ready to push her out

The tea and toast afterwards, although I sicked back up again afterwards in the sink when I was in the bath

Why do some women feel sick afterwards?

Yes, granny you reminded of that first night. I held him all night...and got told off the next day by midwives on ward that it was 'dangerous' (he was well tucked in, and I was hardly sleeping anyway).

Also, when I first saw him - he looked so chubby and cute, and just like a boy that I knew he was a boy without anyone telling me.

MerryMarigold · 13/04/2007 15:13

How come everyone got tea and toast? My ds was born around 10am and I got nothing to eat till about 2pm when they finally realised I'd had no lunch! I was so ecstatically knackered I don't think I even had a drink of water before that...

sheepgomeep · 13/04/2007 15:45

I asked for tea and toast well insisted actually. they can't expect a newly given birth woman to go until the next meal or all night without some form of nourishment.

flutterbee · 13/04/2007 15:46

I got bought tea and toast afterwards took a bite and then threw up bright green sick everywhere just like I did at the begining of labour.

catnip · 13/04/2007 23:15

Holding him the night after he was born, he was screaming and screaming while I was practically dropping with tiredness, I nodded off briefly and woke to find DS looking up at me really solemnly. I completely fell in love with him in that moment
