Am I in labour???

I know it has been done 1000 times before, but if nothing else I just want something to do with myself while my body decides what it is going to do.

I felt fine all day, got to about about 5 o'clock-ish, and very suddenly started to feel sick, didn't want to eat dinner but DH made me eat some toast which perked me up a bit, have been having fairly mild but intense contractions (can you have mild and intense at the same time?!!) with a tiny bit of back pain, coming every 8-10 minutes or so. The contractions aren't painful, but just really tight, and the baby has dropped really low.

Anyone who has followed the last 5 weeks with me, this is completely different to every contraction I have had before!

I actually feel really silly posting this, in case it turns out to be nothing, but I am bored and can't concentrate on the telly, so thought it would at least take some time up.

NatalieJane · 21/11/2006 12:46

Hello girlies

Lulu, that is fantastic news Congratulations and well done!!! I hope you have a nice botle of something special to celebrate properly with

Everything went fine at the midwives, she wouldn't do the sweep again, this time because the student midwife wasn't there (and she wanted to show her what was what) and 2 because after I told her all what has gone since Friday night she decided she want's to see if things kick off naturally, I am a bit pissed off really, but then on the other hand with DS not well, it probably isn't the best time to be encouraging the baby to come now, but I have made her promise that if I waddle into her room again next week she will do it then!!

And DS is still poorly, worse in fact today, I think he has the actual 'flu, he is complaining of head ache, ear ache, back ache, and belly ache, on top of the high temp. cold and cough, poor little thing hasn't moved off the sofa since DH brought him down this morning, he keeps drifting in and out of semi-awakeness, if he is no better by tomorrow I will take him to the doctors, but whilst the calpol is keeping his temp down well enough I think he is best off as he is really, just sleeping it off.

about no sweep. but if it was anyone else, i would have said 'told you so, far too early!!' but if DS proper poorly, best to leave well alone for now!!!

lots of fluids for him and rest....you have had your hands full !
nothing doc can do anyway if not an infection....
make sure you take it easy....if you can...!

and no, i only have virtual drinks these days! LOL

NatalieJane · 21/11/2006 13:09

Well I did say all along it was too early to be asking for the sweep, and if she had have just come out and said no, that would have been fine, it is all of the excuses she gives that I don't like, but as we've said, today probably isn't the best day for him to arrive anyway with DS as he is.

Hmm, no alcohol... chocolates, get yourself down to the shops and buy the whole chocolate aisle - you deserve it

Hooray lulu a fantastic bit of news, you must be soooo thrilled. Will do a happy dance too

Largeg&t wiggles round the room to her own special groove...bop...bop...and sings "yeah lulu is a doula"....bop....bop

NJ poor you with no sweep but it may be just as well if ds is still not well. When i had #5 my ds (then 2 and a half) was admitted to hosp with pneumonia, i was 10 days overdue. I had been doing everything to get the baby out up till that point. When i went in to hosp i told the baby very firmly that it was not to come out until his big bro was home. That was monday, the hosp kept sending midwives upstairs (we were on the kiddies ward) to check me and try and get me downstairs to be induced. I refused, the hospital discharged ds on thursday at 6pm, i went downstairs for a sweep and promised i would be back in the morning to be induced if i didnt work. The midwife said i was 5cm and tried to get me to stay in, i said i didnt feel like i was in labour (only niggly) and wanted to go home and call my midwife from there. She disappeared for ages (ploy to keep me in?) I demanded my notes back after half an hour and decided i probably was in labour so should get home quick. I crawled across the car park out of the maternity unit, exp ahead of me carrying ds. I got in to the front seat and couldnt get comfy so turnred around on all fours, exp drove home very fast, we got there about 745 and my mum, who i phoned in the car, opened the door as we came round the corner. I crawled to the house and in the front door. The midwife (also called from the car) arrived about 8 and ds#5 was born at 820pm! He had done as was aked and waited till his big brother was home safe, if only just! The midwfe thought it was hysterical that i was zooming away from the hospital...

Sorry that was so long, just showing you what could happen! Im sure your baby will stay put until your ds is better and then appear, possibly very quickly!!

NatalieJane · 21/11/2006 17:05

LargeG&T wow what fantastic timing you have!!! LOL Isn't it funny how things work out like that?

Must admit the midwife has me a little worried, she said that due to how quickly DS was born (whole labour from first niggle to him being born was less than 12 hours, I went from 6-10cm in an hour, and then pushed him out in less than 15 minutes) all of that coupled with all of the contractions, which she has now decided must have been doing something and not nothing afterall, she says she expects the whole labour to be less than 2 hours, which isn't good considering DH is often at least that far away, if not closer to 4 hours, plus I need time to get the pool ready (which I won't be able to do on my own) and I get the feeling that after all whats gone on, I am going to be in pretty much established labour by the time I am convinced something is finally happening, and the midwives have warned that it can take up to an hour for them to get here in the middle of the night......

Arghhhhh remind me to never ever ever ever get a silly thought like having a number 3 get into my head please!!! LOL

NatalieJane · 21/11/2006 17:06

Oh meant to say, DS is still poorly, but he seems to have picked up a bit, his calpol is now overdue, but he isn't burning up yet, and hasn't complained yet.... fingers crossed!

luladoula!!!!! ROFL!!!! thanks mars..you are so wonderfully kind..if you are ever in merseyside..i'm taking you out for a big drink!!

largeginandtonic · 21/11/2006 18:58

4 births, surely you will get those in no time. When i was doing my midwifery training we had to watch 5, then do 5 hands on, with mentors hands over mine. Then we were allowed to deliver ourselves with the midwife in the room. Before qualifying we had to have 40 births under our belt. I found it all a bit trick really, i used to feel awful having the poor lady with 2 sets of hands down there. Then when we were pretty much left to our own devices im a 'hands off' kind of person but used to have a 'hands on' mentor, so i always felt like (and she often did) she was going to jump in there cos she thought i was being neglectful.

I loved it lulu, im sure you will be fab. You are so calming, even through a post!

You do sound similar to me NJ, perhaps you should brief ds on what to do, at least on the numbers to ring. How old is he? Ds #4 watched ds#5 being born and says he would like to be there to see this one, in fact they all do! That would be quite an audience, my mum and dh's mum want to be there too, what with Luludoula in the room as well it will be crowded

lulumama · 21/11/2006 20:56

thanks lg&t !!! you are all so lovely and encouraging!

Are we still bored, not interested and not caring about NJ??

largeginandtonic · 21/11/2006 22:18

Of course lulu, not interested at all...in fact may not even check back tomorrow

NatalieJane · 21/11/2006 22:57

Lulu, I'll set the webcam up in time for the birth and then that will be only 3 more to go!! And I think Luladoula is great, I think you need a name change hun
LG&T, I have tried to get DS a bit prepared in case it should all kick off with only him here, he knows how to ring DH. He says he wants to be there when his baby brother is born, and he has seen the programs on Discovery which don't seem to effect him at all, but I don't think he will like it so much on the day, it will depend on how I am I think, if I am quite calm and quiet, then he will be fine, but if I am not calm and quiet, I think he would be petrified TBH! We are just going to see what happens at the time. DH quite rightly pointed out that grown men can be traumatised at witnessing a birth, he says he brother had the gas and air and left his wife to it while she was in labour!!! LOL

And since no one is checking any more, I won't bother to let you know that more of my show came away tonight, and I am once again getting contractions, pretty irregular but quite painful some of them, but I am not getting my hopes up! I really think I am still going to be sat here at 42 weeks...

MKG · 22/11/2006 01:29

NJ,

I keep checking in but am getting very frustrated with your new baby. He's defintely a man, because he's doing whatever he pleases on his own schedule.

If I were you I would go eat three big macs before your next midwife appointed, that will make your bp skyrocket, and then they'll induce you and the you will be done with the whole thing.

NatalieJane · 22/11/2006 04:00

Hiya MKG, I can't even do that, they won't induce me at home!!!

I am finding it a bit easier now, whereas before I was always concentrating on a date that was months and then weeks aWay, it is now only days, and it is broken up even more for me with my two due dates (by my dates I am due Saturday, by their dates I am due next Wednesday)

I wish these contractions would either hurry up and dissapear, or actaully get going and do something, I am shattered

hope you got some sleep mumsnetting not allowed at 4.00 am .....

but it's not like i care or anything...
