1st timer here, been having steady contractions (with pain but not unbearable pain) from 4pm this afternoon to now, was every 10-15 minutes, now every 8 minutes. Bloody show at 11pm. Hurts too much to sleep so got up and ate some noodles. Can't wake the inlaws (who would be taking me to hospital) at this time, and hospital said only go at 5 cm... DH in London (I'm in Belgium) and also don't want to wake him just yet...

If anyone's up I'd really appreciate your support, just a friendly face!

Hey just wanted to lend more support. i am overdue and v bored hanging about on MN. With DS my worst contractions were at the begining went to hospital as you and was told i was 1cm .But after that they became sort of less sharp but more effective . DS was born 18 hours later.
At your stage i was feeling demoralised and felt like i would n't cope but somehow those later contractions wee easier to bear. Good luck it's bound to happen soon now, sending good labour vibes.

Best of luck gem will be looking forward to the birth announcement, so excited for you.

My waters went and I went in to be examined and was told cervix fully shut and to go home and come back in 48 hours. Started getting pains in teh car on the way home, had a bath and 2 paracetamol (??!!) and had 3 pains in 10 minutes in the bath. DP took me back in and was examined (roughly) and told I was 1 cm and was not in active labour even though I was in agony every few minutes. Was told to either go home or lie in the room with the gas and air until morning. As I was making too much noise they came and reexamined me and I was fully dilated so that was 1cm to fully dilated in under 4 hours, DD1 was born 20 minutes later so 1cm is a great start, bet your a mummy by morning

hope you're ok gemmity,
we're all on tenderhooks over on the Oct Antenatal thread, wondering how you're getting on.
still nothing more than these endless contractions for me - but not really painful enough or regular enough to warrant heading to the maternity ward.
thinking of you xxx

Hi everybody, sorry to "steal" the threat but the title sounds quite appropriate now for me. I am almost 38 weeks pregnant and today I was awake by "period like pains" at 3 in the morning. Husband is sleeping in the sofa (poor thing) and I dont want to wake him up unless its "the real thing". This is my second baby, so I feel rather stupid trying to figure it out my self, if things are starting or not. My first baby was back to back so the contractions were really strong... I did not have this "period like" pains with the first one. I also feel like desire to go to the loo, but nothing happens... If this is the real thing, I need to go to hospital quite soon as I am strep B carrier and need the antibiotics to protect baby, however I dont want to raise false alarm either.... what to do?? no show, waters have not gone yet, just this quite regular "period like pains", right down, that are lasting around 50 seconds.... I wonder if anybody can relate to this picture??

hi, princes, also wondering whether am in labour. unfort. first timer so not much good for advice. do keep remembering people saying you know when you are in labour so maybe not as although painful period pains, nothing more. as for show you may have had it some point without knowing it. and the waters can break anytime up to the end can't they.

Not sure honey, I would personally just wait it out a wee bit longer if they pains are so mild. You could try phoning your local maternity unit and seeing what they say, they won't mind at all - don't forget to mention about the Strep B. I am a carrier too, so sympathy there.

I'm up feeling sick and yukky - due in Spril next yr wih my third.

//[hugs]

When are you due btw??

Yes waters can break anytime up to the end - all the best to you too martha!!

hi marthahm - good to have a virtual "labour (or fake labour) partner"! When are you due? My due date is 23rd october, but somehow I don't think I'll make it until then! how are your pains like? more in the back or in the lower belly? mine are mild pains now, but they do take my breath away and I have to concentrate when they come... coming quite regularly every 5 minutes... I am not panicking so much yet, as with first baby they were SO strong when in real labour.... however, maybe this time is different??

Report
CaptainDippy · 08/10/2006 05:09

I'd call your unit just cos of the Strep B!

Princesitalinda · 08/10/2006 05:15

hi captaindippy - thanks for advice. I am next to the telephone, will walk around a bit first to see whether it goes away, maybe being in the same position brings on the contractions (feeling more like stronger BH than labour...) if not, I'll ring the delivery suite.... scary!!

I wonder if congtractions are milder second time around or is it because baby is lying in good position this time...

marthahm · 08/10/2006 05:17

yes i agree with captaindippy. there'll be someone on duty anyway and with 2nd things can go quicker. i'm due on the 13th oct. had show thursday before last i think. i've been getting period like pains for 6or7 nights now getting stronger. pain is at the front, worst low down but also across my back. they woke me up tonight. wouldn't stop til came downstairs and posted on mnet! obviously stopped now and feel like fraud. my plan is to go and have some rice pudding i left downstairs and if the pain still gone then will try to go back to sleep.
how's yours now?

Hi guys - just wanted to let you know that with my second we had 2 weeks of evey other night false labour - really nasty and regular BHx but that when it finally happened I was woken by the contractions and knew they were the real thing - they were strong but bearable. I stayed at home for an hour until my dh put his foot down and got me to hospital - I was 4 cm on arrival and within 50 minutes wanted to push - dd1 was born an hour after I arrived! From first contraction to birth was 3 hours - I was later told by my MW that if you have loads of practice labour it speeds up the real one - would have been more helpful if told to me beforehand but there you go. Good luck
xx

3senough

m so glad that someone else had the endless false alarms! i was in and out of hosptal in agony with them telling me i was in labour and the contractions were proper ones on the monitors but because i wasnt dilating they said it was braxton hicks.

when they started again at 3am it was exactly the same pains but i felt like i had to go to the toilet and the pain didnt end and at 9.51am i had my 2nd child in the lounge of my house as the midwife only arrived at 8.45am and said it was too close to get me to the hospital!!

she said it was alot quicker than my first birth as id had so much practise in the weeks before!

until she checked me and said that yes i was dillating i honestly thought it was false again.

good luck to all of you that are in labour now and will be having your babies soon.

i hope all goes well for you

remember, make sure you get to the hospital!!!!!!
if you're unsure if this is it, get yourself checked out, better to be safe than sorry.

big hugs to you all

Hi guys!

To all of you talking about strepB (partic. princessitalinda), do not waste time getting to hospital if you think this is it because they have to allow enough time to give you the antibiotics before babe is born so that they go through to baby.

I had an infection (not strepB, just a cold or something - we'll never know) but they 'forgot' to give me the antibiotics and then when they remembered, it was too late as I was being induced and things happened very quickly.

The result was that little baby got an infection which kept us in Special Care for nearly a week as she was administered antibiotics intravenously. All was well in the end, after much anxiety, but it could all have been avoided if I'd just had the antibiotics in the first place! Well, i will know for next time!

Am thinking of you all. Lack of news from GemmityGem makes me think she's in hospital (hopefully enjoying holding her DS/D in arms!).
