1st timer here, been having steady contractions (with pain but not unbearable pain) from 4pm this afternoon to now, was every 10-15 minutes, now every 8 minutes. Bloody show at 11pm. Hurts too much to sleep so got up and ate some noodles. Can't wake the inlaws (who would be taking me to hospital) at this time, and hospital said only go at 5 cm... DH in London (I'm in Belgium) and also don't want to wake him just yet...

If anyone's up I'd really appreciate your support, just a friendly face!

Good Morning Northern Hemisphere!

Am hoping Gem's managed to sleep. In the meantime I'm listening to the capital fm breakfast show live over the interweb and tapping my fingers waiting for some good news.

Good morning .
Gem, did you sleep? Have you woken the inlaws and phoned dh yet?

I took it really slowly with my first (pacing myself) By the time I went in and asked for pain relief (paracteamol - I thoughtI had a long way to go!) I was fully dilated.
Don't leae it too long...good luck

hi ladies,

I'm so gutted: just got back from the hospital, was examined by a horrible doctor who was really rough, and I'm only 1 cm dilated, so all the contractions were for nothing! All that's happened is that the baby has moved right down and completely engaged. Dh will be here by 6pm so that's good, but I feel such an idiot because it was so regular and painful and all for nothing, with probably days or whatever to go! and can't sleep because still getting them every 8-10 minutes on the dot.. grrr!

thanks for all your support: I'm hoping it will probably all kick off in the next few hours/days, but feeling really fed up now as it's almost 24 hours of contractions!

1cm is a good start - at least your DH is on his way. Sounds like you shouldn't have too long to go either. Best of luck

1cm is closer than 0cm. The contractions haven't been for nothing. At least you know DH will be home soon.
Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Oh Gem! What a nightmare for you. And a horrid doctor too. . I also went in and was only 1cm and know how soul destroying it is after hours of contractions.

How are the contractions now? Have they tailed off enough for you to get some rest? I really hope so.

You poor thing! At least DH is on his way now.

Try to sleep and rest as much as possible if you can.

Don't you wish someone would invent some gadget that would tell women how many cms they are to save them going in and being guddled with by rough nasty people? Still it gives your dh time to get there. Have you got company for the rest of the day? (other than MN ) Keep us posted.

thanks for all your encouragement!

I'm very glad DH is coming, and am trying to stay positive and think, well it probably is a case of a couple of days rather than weeks (hope so anyway). Waters breaking would be a good next step...

Contx are still regular as clockwork on 8 minutes and pretty painful, so I suppose they will have to have some effect at some point! As long as that vet woman has gone off duty by the time I go back there...

arfishymeau, how long from your '1cm' diagnosis did it take before you actually gave birth (lie to me if it was too long!!)

Morning, Hi gemmity - try not to feel too disappointed - you've had your show, and your body has had a practice. This gives your dh time to get there. You handled last night very serenly and stayed calm Well done - It wont be long now - I had a false alarm on the monday night and dd was born early hours wed morning. If you want things to happen try and stay active - but you will also need to get some rest after last night so you have strentgh for the real thing

well i just read the whole thread with tears rolling down my face... what's that about? broody moi? i didn't think so, now i'm not so sure!

anyway, with dd1 i had bad period like pain for a whole day, went into hospital to be roughly examined and was 2cm, got sent home, told to come back when my waters broke. Then at home i refused to go back, thinking it was only 2 hours later, my waters hadn't broken and i would be only 4cm. When i started holding my bum my mum shouted at my dh to get me to hospital FAST - when i got there i was 8cm! (my waters must have broken when i had a bath, i had no idea - and hadn't had a show either.)

Anyway, the point i am trying to make is as soon as the contractions really get strong then don't hang about!!

aaah. you are so close......rest, nourish yourself, lie on the sofa and chill... if baby engaged fully - won't be long

i went from 3 cm to baby in arms in 2 hours 45 , so don't fret......

1 cm is 1/10th the way there.....sending good labour vibes.....

Try not to feel disappointed Gem - I went into hospital and was only 2cm dilated and DD was born only 7 hours later!!!! Just keep telling yourself that every contraction takes you a little bit closer. Every contraction is your body getting ready to give you your baby. So the contractions you have already had are absolutely not "for nothing".

Just remembered - from 1cm it was about 24 hours to delivery.

arfishymeau · 06/10/2006 13:07

Hi Gem, DD was born 12 hours after my 1cm (actually, my nurse told me I was 2cm to stop me being so disappointed, and revealed afterwards that she'd fibbed a bit and I was only 1cm!). I also had to have my waters broken.

Fingers crossed for you, it's now bedtime here, so I'll have to catch up in the morning.

Best of luck! Here's to speedy dilating.

Oh Gemmity - Its morning in the US so we're just getting up but wanted to check on you.

So sorry about the doctor - how horrible. THat was the most painful thing for me throughout my labor - obvioulsy the contx weren't great but the people checking on me were far worse. AT least you shouldn't have long to go now. And DH will be there. I'm pleased he's on his way.

Hope you are getting some rest - I know sleep will be hard but do try

hi!
feeling a bit more human and able to retain sense of Zen after 3 hours of painful but much needed napping. husband arriving at 6pm. contx still coming but no change.. leaning back against a boiling hot radiator is doing wonders.

Anyway the hospital bag is still in the boot of the car, so I can only hope for imminent developments!

will keep you all posted, thanks to all for being so kind and supportive!!
