1st timer here, been having steady contractions (with pain but not unbearable pain) from 4pm this afternoon to now, was every 10-15 minutes, now every 8 minutes. Bloody show at 11pm. Hurts too much to sleep so got up and ate some noodles. Can't wake the inlaws (who would be taking me to hospital) at this time, and hospital said only go at 5 cm... DH in London (I'm in Belgium) and also don't want to wake him just yet...

If anyone's up I'd really appreciate your support, just a friendly face!

Hi Gem. If your DP catches an 8pm flight then he won't be home for another 20 or so hours.

You do sound like you're properly in labour and it might suddenly speed up. Why don't you call him and let him know? I think you should get him on the 6am Eurostar. He'll probably get an upgrade if he mentions you're in labour .

How are you feeling? How are the contractions?

mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 03:39

Yes - please wake your in-laws if you feel you need some support - just a hand to squeeze and someone to support you or rub your back etc.

Tell us what DH says...

MrsApronstrings · 06/10/2006 03:39

I would get him on the earlier plane, also think your doing really well

MrsApronstrings · 06/10/2006 03:40

also agree with arfish - this does sound very much like real labour

mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 03:41

If your contractions are lasting that long, I would def get in contact with dh and the hospital - have you spoken to them? They may be able to tell you when they want you to go in.

mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 03:43

How are you feeling?

mrsdarcy · 06/10/2006 03:45

I would definitely call your DH so he can get on the first place to Antwerp. Yes, you could have ages to go, but just as plausibly you could give birth in the next few hours. If it is a false alarm, well, that's in the nature of the situation.

If I was contracting as you are I would be well along and would probably deliver before daybreak - but obviously everyone is different.

Also, IME, you go from thinking "I'm going just fine, thank you" to "I want DH here right now" pretty suddenly

You'll be holding your baby soon, you lucky lucky woman and (am broody!)

MrsApronstrings · 06/10/2006 03:46

gemmitygem do you know what you are having btw?

arfishy and mamaa - glad someone is around need to get some sleep as i will have to be up at 6 with the littles

Gemmitygem · 06/10/2006 03:46

will ring him in a bit...

it's funny but in a way I feel calmer being completely on my own cos I can just use my own plan and not have to worry about DH as well as me.. for the early stages, that is. I think I'll need him as it gets more severe!

just tried to lie down but that hurt more.. think sleep's gone out of the window unfortunately. I don't think I can have dilated much, maybe should try walking up and down the stairs or something, do you think that will help?

MrsApronstrings · 06/10/2006 03:48

mrsdarcy is talking a lot of sense - and am also

Gemmitygem · 06/10/2006 03:51

Hospital said only to come in when ctx were every 5 minutes and had been for an hour, and these are definitely every 8-10 minutes like clockwork...

Don't mean to keep you up everyone! I'm really OK, it's just great to be able to talk to other mums who've been through it, specially at this time of night! Will wake ILs in precisely one hour, which means only about 7-8 contx, and maybe things will have intensified by then (I'm supping on yet more raspberry leaf tea as we speak)..

MrsApronstrings · 06/10/2006 03:51

i think you are def on your way - walking helps - but can also speed things up.

mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 03:51

I'm glad you are feeling calm. I don't mean to be bossy or pushy , but I really would contact dh asap. MrsDarcy is right - you can end up changing your mind very very quickly!

I think walking is meant to speed things up so if you want to wait for dh, you might not want to do that! I know it can help relieve the discomfort though. Squatting helped me or, if you have a big ball to sit on that might help too... or a bath?

mrsdarcy · 06/10/2006 03:57

If you worry that things are happening too fast, eg whilst you are waiting for your DH to arrive, get on your knees, knees apart, lean forward and stick your bum in the air (so dignified!)

I MUST go to bed. Good luck and tell us all about it.

arfishymeau · 06/10/2006 03:57

Goodness MrsA, I've just realised the time. You'll have to be up again in 2 hours! Off you go, we'll hold the fort.

How are things Gem?

mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 03:59

Me too - I'm

I'll be around for a bit...

Keep us posted. Do you know if it's a boy or girl? Do you have names? When is your due date?

Gemmitygem · 06/10/2006 04:15

good night and thanks Mrs D!

Nothing new, still every 10 mins.. due date is 12 Oct, don't know the sex but think it's a boy,

OP posts:
mamamaaargh · 06/10/2006 04:18

Ooo, my due date was Oct 9th & ds came on Sept 22nd. Was very releived to have him early as I was quite fed up by then!

Names? Or are you waiting to see?

Gemmitygem · 06/10/2006 04:31

we've got about 5 names for each sex, so will wait and see...
might try and lie down for an hour and just put up with the contx as feeling knackered... will post again in a bit..

Yes, get some rest. I'll probably be in bed when you get back, but hopefully some early risers in the UK will be around then .

Hope all goes well. Try to enjoy it & let us know how you get on. I'll check on you first thing in the morning. Thank you for sharing with us!

arfishymeau · 06/10/2006 05:05

Hi Gem, any progress? Did you manage a nap?

HauntedsandCastle · 06/10/2006 05:31

arfishy - always left to us Aussie's to hold the fort thru the night eh?

Wonder what's happening!

arfishymeau · 06/10/2006 05:36

Yep, we have a very important mumsnetting role in supporting the overnight labourers.

Hope you're ok Gem. We're still here if you need some moral support.

The UK lot will be up in an hour agog for news of the birth too. No pressure tho'

HauntedsandCastle · 06/10/2006 05:43

highly important...

BudaBeast · 06/10/2006 06:10

Already up here in Budapest. How exciting. Hope you are OK Gemmitygem.

Get your DH on his way. Understand where youare coming from - I was the same. Lived in Vietnam and was in process of moving to Bulgaria when pg with DS. Had him in Dublin. DH was in Bulgaria and not due to come for another week when I felt things were imminent. So got him to come early.

Phoned him Thursday am to come Friday night as just had a vague feeling. Waters broke Thursday night. (DH went out with colleagues til 4am!!) Nothing happened with me. He arrived Friday night. I was up all night with contractions which stopped about 7am. Went in to be induced on Sat am. DS born early hours Sun am.

Will check back later to see if any news!
