When/where did your waters break?

I've suddenly realised that if my waters go unexpectedly in my house it might get a bit messy Confused and we've just had new carpets but then when watching OBEM etc and reading about birth, it seems more common for your waters to go once you're already labouring, maybe even at the hospital already.
The unexpected waters seem to be mostly reserved for the movies!
What was your experience? and did you ruin any fixtures and fittings?!

First time was during my labour whilst at the hospital... I felt abit sick so rushed to the loo but didnt get there so was sick in the empty birth pool, asked my hubby to clear it up so he had sumthin to do, he couldnt switch the taps on and was stood up in the pool with my sick and i laughed so hard my waters broke!!
Second time i went for a lie down on my due date, i felt a pop, didnt realise it was waters until i rolled over and having opened my legs abit the water came out... Nothing ruined.

Dc1 - broken with the hook in hospital
Dc2 - broke whilst I crossed the street in town! I waddled all wet back to my car!

slightlyinsane · 04/08/2014 05:43

First 3 were during labour just before I started pushing. The ttwins was while I was sat on the sofa one night, felt the pop, didn't know I had it in me to move as fast as I did so it didn't cover the sofa. Labour started 4 hrs after the twins arrived 3 hrs after that.

JustCallMeBaldrick · 04/08/2014 07:04

DTs waters went as I got out of the car to go for a curry, DD1 in hospital about 20 mins before she arrived, and DD2 as I turned over in bed at 5 days overdue - not very messy, as I waddled faster than I would have thought possible along the landing dripping all the way...

nooka · 04/08/2014 07:14

In bed at around 7am with both of mine. Not as a huge gush though, and with dd I leaved for the next three days before I was finally induced (I wore ds's cloth nappies!). Oh and 10 days early with both of them.

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 04/08/2014 07:24

Mine broke at the top of the stairs at home before any constractions started with dc1
Dc2 they couldn't even break them in hospital!!

Nessalina · 04/08/2014 09:20

Right! So far we're about 50/50 for broke in hospital vs broke somewhere inconvenient!
I always assumed they went in one go - I didn't know they could leak for ages Shock At least I should have lots of maternity pads in just in case!

Didn't until baby nearly came out!

BabyStone · 04/08/2014 09:28

I was induced on my due date, pessary at 10am, my waters broke at 8pm that evening in the Induction suite all on my own as DP had gone home to check some stuff and feed the cats etc. I just got up to go to the toilet and POP there they went with a huge gush (i had too much waters) luckily i wasn't too far from the buzzer on the bed to call for a mw who came rushing along. They found more water when i was in labour

Eminybob · 04/08/2014 09:38

Mine took me completely by surprise at 37+4.

Was sitting on the sofa watching telly about 9pm on the Friday night, got up for some reason (probably for more chocolate Blush) and felt a gush. Looked down to find damp patch on the sofa so quickly ran to the kitchen where there was a complete downpour.

Contractions started about an hour later, full labour at 4am Saturday morning and DS was born at 1.22pm.

The midwives said it was pretty textbook following spontaneous rupture of membranes or whatever they called it.

Lamu · 04/08/2014 09:39

With DD1 waters trickled in the car on the way to hospital. DD2 they gushed on the sofa at 35 weeks whilst watching Game Of Thrones king Joffrey had just been poisoned I jumped so fast off the sofa as I thought I'd peed myself with excitement.

Nessalina · 04/08/2014 09:58

Grin @ Lamu - I'm surprised that Joffrey's poison face didn't bring on more labours around the country! Confused

Eminy - good to know that even with a surprise you have a bit of time to make a dash for it! I can hopefully waddle quite speedily from any carpeted room to a laminate floored one without too much damage being inflicted Grin

I think it was instinctive - I've only had my living room carpet down 6 months! Grin

EvilHerbivore · 04/08/2014 11:12

Both times they went literally seconds before baby was born, in fact I think DS2 came out with waters (there were loads with him though)
In terms of location, with DS1 it was on the hospital bed and DS2 on our bed (home birth) but the midwives had put plastic sheeting and towels down so nothing got stained

CulturalBear · 04/08/2014 11:26

In bed, at 2am at 39+6 - I was asleep and felt a pop and something like I was about to wet myself. Dashed to the loo (not easy in my house, down a short flight of steps and up another) and wasn't wet.

Realised when I'd definitely stopped weeing and the water was still coming, that it was my waters (I took some convincing). Ended up stood in the bath wondering what the hell to do and how to get to my mat pads in the bedroom without wrecking the joint!

Mild contractions ensued after front waters went in the shower at 8am. Ended up on the drip after 40 hours as nothing significant happening, DS arrived almost exactly 48 hours after first waters went.

I got through loads of pads before DS was even born lol :)

Those maternity sheet thingies - like puppy pads? - came in really handy. Used one in the car to and from hospital, on the sofa, on the birthing ball etc. Amazingly nothing got drenched :)

SouthDerbyshireMamma · 04/08/2014 18:44

Mine sprung a dribbly leak at home about 8.30 pm at 38+6 and I gave birth at 39 weeks at 8.32am.

I was convinced they would burst on my brand new sofa lol!

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 04/08/2014 18:48

In the bath! Convenient on the one hand...no real mess/cleaning but hard to know that is what had happened, only realised as there was blood and then saw my mucous plug float by!

stargirl1701 · 04/08/2014 18:50

Second last push in the pool. No mess Grin

Callmecordelia · 04/08/2014 19:17

Small trickle while we were out and about. I sat on one of those sheets in the car going back to get the hospital bag (no, it wasn't in the boot), and then a huge, huge gush just outside the front door to our flat. I am so pleased that I hadn't taken too more steps, and that it was raining. Blush

Freya83 · 04/08/2014 19:22

In the birth pool a few minutes before she arrived!

mrsbucketxx · 04/08/2014 19:25

My first was as I got out of bed to ease a contraction in the labour ward it was in the middle of the night, I was worried the woman in the next bay would slip so cleaned it up myself. Obly then did I get a midwife.

Second was done for me while I was induced

FreeWee · 04/08/2014 19:25

Mine 'popped' as I got into bed but only a trickle so made it to the toilet. Then kept 'breaking' for the next god knows how many hours as I writhed on my birthing ball 'wetting' myself and puking. Joy Grin

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2014 19:28

All three times my waters broke just before the baby was born.

The second time, the poor midwife got a faceful when she bent down at the wrong moment Grin

StrumpersPlunkett · 04/08/2014 19:37

DS1 after 36 hours at 10 cm just before pushing
DS2 after 1 hour of contractions in the birthing pool about 10 minutes before he popped out.

VodkaKnockers · 04/08/2014 19:51

With DS2 my waters broke outside my block of flats as I stepping into the ambulance with most of my neighbours and random bystanders watching.
It sounded like a water balloon being smashed against the ground.

DS2 arrived 5 mins later in the back of said ambulance.
