When/where did your waters break?

I've suddenly realised that if my waters go unexpectedly in my house it might get a bit messy Confused and we've just had new carpets but then when watching OBEM etc and reading about birth, it seems more common for your waters to go once you're already labouring, maybe even at the hospital already.
The unexpected waters seem to be mostly reserved for the movies!
What was your experience? and did you ruin any fixtures and fittings?!

Wow spud28 that's supposed to be massively lucky for the superstitiousy types! Think the legend is that those 'born in a cawl' will never drown at sea! Fishermen in the olden days would buy the membranes and make trinkets out of them for luck and everything!

TeWiSavesTheDay · 06/08/2014 10:25

1st baby, had two contractions then my waters broke - totally film perfect start of labour! I was in bed, do bother with mattress protectors Grin

Next two times, once they were broken during labour when things weren't progressing, and once they broke at the beginning of the pushing stage.

Eatscones · 07/08/2014 23:50

I was at the hospital ... about 4 cm dilated and just had my first taste of gas and air ... which subsequently knocked me out - so had an good hour sleep and I woke up to a 'pop' around 3am. Baby was born at 9:39am

CheesyBadger · 07/08/2014 23:58

Fore waters in bed 5am
Hind waters broken by midwife and flooded the delivery suite!

Frizz1986 · 11/08/2014 23:50

In the toilet after doing a wee at 9am on xmas eve.
I had been contracting for 4 days but had assumed they were braxton hicks......they werent.
Baby was out at 10:49am.

BikeRunSki · 11/08/2014 23:55

Ds - just as I got into bed, I saw the clock change from 11.29 to 11.30. Made it out of bed and into shower before the big gush.

DD - I was scrubbing kitchen floor. Not deliberately to bring on labour, but because DS had dropped a pint of milk.

blushingmare · 24/08/2014 22:28

In bed, in a massive gush and it just kept coming! Got DH to get a load of towels, but soaked through them all pretty quickly. Once labour was over etc, I was really worried about my bed as we'd had a new mattress the month before (bad timing), but actually, my mum had stripped the sheets and said the mattress was fine, so no casualties!

chestnut100 · 24/08/2014 22:32

Walking through a very busy central London st on the way to my 40 week midwife appointment. They went with a huge gush. They were very bloody too; much to my surprise. I had no idea it could be that way. I was literally wandering round Victoria covered in it all!

MsVanRein · 24/08/2014 22:37

Mine broke in hospital - but I was an inpatient due to complications and that was the onset of established labour for me so in different circumstances I would have been at home.

In hindsight id been dilated and probably in early stages of labour for days but I had no idea what it was meant to feel like so didn't know!

Pumble · 24/08/2014 22:40

DD1 - I didn't realise they had gone... Rushed to the loo as thought my pelvic floor had finally given up and then kept feeling like I needed another wee. When I got to the hospital they asked if they had gone and had to check as I just didn't know.

DD2 - She 'fell' out with my waters all over my sitting room floor - it was an interesting arrival for her! (Yes, Mr Paramedic, I do know when I am about to have a baby, even if you are so convinced I'm not, you leave the house to go the ambulance not at all bitter Wink

mommathatwearspink · 24/08/2014 22:43

My waters broke at 37+5 at home in bed around 11pm. I had been stripping the wallpaper in our bedroom that day but I'm sure my body had been hearing up for it for a few days previously. It felt like a bubble popped and then I felt trickling water. I made it out of bed and into the bathroom before they went properly. Labour didn't start properly and I was induced 24hrs later. DD arrived at lunchtime on the Friday.

LabradorMama · 25/08/2014 08:38

In bed, an hour and a half before first contraction. Luckily I had a waterproof sheet on the bed, it was like a tidal wave! Carried on for the next few hours until DS was born. No one warned me how oily/slippery it would be!! Very hard to wipe off bare legs!

Thumbwitch · 25/08/2014 08:44

DS1 - down the toilet on the Maternity ward, after several hours of induced labour contractions.

DS2 - all over the consultant who was rupturing them - he only meant to release a little bit but because DS2's head wasn't engaged, it was like releasing a dam and it flooded everywhere! Grin

Hi, quick question. I'm 39+ 3. I want to know, when people talk of a 'gush' , how much water is that likely to be?
Just been to the toilet, stood up and made a smallish puddle on the floor. Could this be my waters or just the pressure of the baby and a ' bit of an accident' ? No other pains or symptoms at the moment. Any thoughts?

purplemurple1 · 25/08/2014 09:13

I had the sudden gush, about 5 hrs before any contractions (@39weeks) all over the living room rug.
It is fairly uncommon though.

MewlingQuim · 25/08/2014 09:28

I'm not entirely sure. I felt a bit dribbly sorry before I got in the birth pool so maybe they started to go before I got in. Otherwise they must have gone in the pool I suppose. I didn't notice, I was busy!

I had had towels on the bed and on the car seat for the previous few weeks just in case though, car and mattress were both new and I was paranoid about ruining them Grin

allisgood1 · 30/08/2014 10:37

Dd1 waters went on the sofa.

Dd2 they were broken in hospital.

Ds1 they went in bed!

ShelaghTurner · 30/08/2014 10:41

Hospital both times thank goodness. With DD1 it was an actual flood. I never knew so much liquid could exist inside one person! So with DD2 I slept on a bin bag/changing mat combo for about a month and then they dribbled out in the labour ward.

NotCitrus · 30/08/2014 10:50

Ds - in labour at home, had a bath, got out, dried myself, kept drying and drying and drying!
Dd - in car park of hospital. The shrubbery probably benefited. The bin bag and towel on the car seat probably got some too - don't think I've seen that towel since!

Did feel sorry for a woman being transferred from check in to delivery ward who was asked in the lift if her waters had broken - she wailed yes, on the way up here, and pointed to a puddle on the floor! Iwas very English and didn't say anything.

BlueStringPudding · 30/08/2014 10:59

DD1 waters didn't break and she was born in a caul
DD2 waters broke in Sainsbury's car park and there was quite a lot of blood for some reason, I was on my own with 1yr old DD1 and a large trolley of shopping.
DS waters broken in early stages of labour to speed things up, and it did very much so.

marymouse · 30/08/2014 17:22

dc1 waters went when I was 9cm dilated (in hosp)
dc2 waters were broken for me during labour (home birth)
dc3 waters broke as I pressed the buzzer to be let into the maternity unit

MrsPatMustard · 04/09/2014 10:12

In bed - was the only one in my NCT class who didn't buy the mattress protector thingy and turned out to be the only who in the class who actually needed it - oh the irony!

Nessalina · 04/09/2014 10:16

I reckon I'm going to stick a mattress protector on at 36 weeks. I'd be unlucky for it to be earlier, but don't want to leave it later as mattress is new!
