Have I, unknowingly, made this worse for myself?

Afternoon!

I'm 39 weeks pregnant with my first and have been having fairly strong cramps and tensing since 11pm on Tuesday night. Went to maternity twice yesterday just to see how things were progressing. I'd got to 2 cms dilated yesterday afternoon on the second check up. Most of yesterday I was sitting upright-ish in a chair and just breathing through any tensing (mostly in my back as little one is back-to-back despite being perfect on Monday).

Since yesterday afternoon, back at home, I have been trying to get on all fours during each contraction/tensing to get him to turn and drop but still not a lot doing. The tensing doesn't seem to be getting stronger or more frequent and waters haven't gone. I have also been trying to spend as much time as possible resting on my side and kneeling up against the edge of the bed, or on all fours rotating my pelvis whilst there are no contractions.

So that's over 40 hours of contractions so far! Have I done anything to cause the first stage so be so long, or is this fairly normal?!

I really don't want to go back to maternity again to be checked for them to tell me that I'm only another 1 or 2 cms dilated since 24 hours ago! My waters haven't gone yet either.

Ok an update!!

Contractions were getting more and more painful, and not baths and codeine was not really helping. Didn't matter what position I was in and I just couldn't manage things particularly well! So, at 1.15 am we went to labour ward where they gave me another check up. Finally thing were getting somewhere!!!

Put me on the monitor to keep an eye on baby's pulse rate but he was flapping about so much the midwife (who was incredible) got the doctor to put a clip on him after an hour or so. I was also a bit dehydrated by this point so had a cannula in. It was next to a valve so needed to be repositioned. As the doctor had put the sensor on little one's head, she broke the waters which got things going really quickly. I opted for diamorphine in the end as well as I was exhausted, having been dealing with contractions for 80 hours.

Finally, at 7.09 on Saturday 28th December William was born, 7 lb 03 oz and he is completely perfect. Was a "normal" delivery with no other intervention, but did need a few stitches afterwards for a second degree tear.

We stayed overnight and he's feeding easily, and has already taught me how to change many nappies!! Just at home again now, and have already taken the dog out to the park for a run, with William in the pram - thought we'd start as we wanted to go on!!

Thank you soooo much to all of you who kept my spirits up and reassuring me that things would be ok. I am very grateful to you all xxx
