I had a bunch of stitches both times with vaginal deliveries and never had that. I'm hugely relieved i missed it, but then the midwife first time round completely missed the fact that the stitches had over-healed and left me with a large keloid scar that was burned off with silver nitrate. That is something i would be delighted never to experience again!

For those facing this make sure you cling on tight to the g & a before they start. No local given but g & a did the job for me!

Bowlersarm · 01/03/2015 19:29

Yes I had it . Wasn't a problem, just pleased at the medical professionalism.

PookBob · 01/03/2015 19:33

I had a 4th degree tear.

A mere finger up the bum would have been preferable.

Georgethesecond · 01/03/2015 19:33

Oh I think we all shat ourselves didn't we?
I'm sure that was what the midwife was doing with that thing like a washing up liquid bottle with no top on - removing the little poos?

gaggiagirl · 01/03/2015 19:45

I tore front to back. I couldn't feel a thing anyway, not because of painkillers, just numb because it couldn't feel any worse.
She could have shoved a mug tree up my arse I wouldn't have felt it.
The finger was fine.

WiIdfire · 01/03/2015 19:49

Having stuck my finger up a thousand+ bums in the name of medicine, I always, always, ALWAYS ask first. And wait for the affirmative reply. Anything less than that is just not good enough. A little shocked at how many of you weren't warned to be honest.

BlueberryWafer · 01/03/2015 20:52

The doctor did check my bum, but she asked me first! She said she needed to check everything was stitched right. They should always bloody ask though!

MildredDreadful · 01/03/2015 21:09

Happened to me in two births. Dr always asked first though. One was to check after a tear. And one was to check after a ventouse delivery that there wasn't any damage. Had a lovely morphine pessary too, with that one. It really helped me get back on my feet the next day after a very prolonged labour and difficult delivery.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 01/03/2015 21:29

I have to say if anyone medical or otherwise did this to me without my informed consent I would probably be doing some assaulting of my own.

I had no idea real medical professionals - actual humans would do or have done this. I'm also slightly surprised that no one has reported it as assault as well tbh if someone did this with no warning at all.

jaykay34 · 04/03/2015 17:29

I had this after ventouse delivery and stitches to check for damage.

The doctor apologetically forewarned me but I didn't really notice or care, even though I knew she was doing it.
After the experience of having to push out what felt like pooing out a massive bowling ball in just 4 pushes, a finger up the bum was nothing Smile . Plus i was holding my gorgeous healthy boy at the time, after he scared us with a really low heart rate.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2015 17:51

Not on to avoid telling a patient beforehand.

Aestas333 · 15/03/2015 02:36

This made me laugh so much.

Gemzybelle · 15/03/2015 13:14

After the indignities and pain of childbirth I would be most put out if someone came along without introduction and shoved their finger up my arse!

sugarplumfairy28 · 18/03/2015 20:17

I nearly nearly had the finger up the bum, but I have a massive phobia of all things medical, and both DS and DD were born at home. Was fine with DS and I think I had a small tear. With DD though the second midwife who turned up in the nick of time, was somewhat abrasive and I didn't really like her. I was lying on the bed completely exposed, and just happened to over her the second midwife talking about investigating my anus! From what I recall, I believe it was to check for a 3rd degree tear. I sat bolt up right and tried to ask wtf, and was told oh I'm just going to pop my finger up your bum. I swear I said 4 or 5 times, no. I ended up screaming for my mum who had gone downstairs I was in such a state, I had to have counseling. The first midwife was lovely, my mum had explained my phobia and she was incredibly supportive in a way I could deal with, although still no warning of the possibility lol.

Missm00 · 18/03/2015 20:22

I had this to check the stitches after my 2nd dc as I tore along the same lines of my first (ouch)

Roseybee10 · 19/03/2015 20:46

I had this with my first to check the tear hadn't gone all the way through.

Never had it with dd2 as only had a grAze.
