PrincessFlirtyPants i wud have refused it if i knew about it i assume you can refuse it i would ask your midwife it was horrible

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 01/12/2013 16:12

I had a natural birth and 2nd degree year. No finger up bum surprise!!

whereisthewitch · 01/12/2013 16:16

I had this Grin
I had an episiotomy and only 2 stitches but didn't feel it because of the epidural. I totally forgot about the registrar putting his finger up until I read this thread Confused
Can't remember his explanation though.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 01/12/2013 16:16

It really does sound it, princesscupcakemummyb

IdaClair · 01/12/2013 17:28

Of course you can refuse to let people put their fingers in you.

Not matter what the reason is, you say no and they don't do it.

karamcleod · 01/12/2013 18:41

Be thankful it wasn't a rubber fist...

RedToothBrush · 01/12/2013 18:57

Just a point here. If you've had this and weren't 'forewarned' you have actually technically been assaulted as they should ALWAYS warn you and get your consent for anything intimate like this.

Some posts on this thread are worrying.

Squitten · 01/12/2013 19:34

I had DD at home and they warned me well in advance that they had to check the back passage afterwards in case of tears up there. It was fine - hardly felt anything!

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 19:37

If you year we have to check the year does not go through to the anus. Likewise once suturing is complete we then check your bottom again to ensure we can't feel the threads of the sutures in your back passage.
We also put pain killer up there after c section and after suturing. You should however be informed of what is happening and why. It is standard practice.

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 19:40

Year - I obviously mean tear!

Wingdingdong · 01/12/2013 19:46

What?! I didn't get that after either CS (I'm not complaining). However, I didn't get anaesthetic for the first, either, but that's a whole other story. There wasn't much standard practice going on at that hospital... standard negligence, more like. The second, I was told that the anaesthetic would be enough but if it wasn't I could ask for ibuprofen. Nothing about pessaries.

MewlingQuim · 01/12/2013 19:48

I had that happen but I was asked if it was ok first. I assumed it was to check for any tearing.

Shocking that some have had a finger up the star without asking, how impolite Shock

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 19:50

It is assault for an intimate (or any other) examination to be undertaken without consent....

CoconutRing · 01/12/2013 20:52

I'm not surprised that some women on this thread have had an intimate exam performed on them without consent. Some members of the medical community seem to have no respect for women.

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 20:57

Sadly I have to agree.

mrsannekins · 01/12/2013 21:03

Crikey, this thread has brought it all back..I too am a member of this unique club...thankfully the surgeon who did it said he would be doing it, but do be honest I was so out of it on g&a I had no idea what was going on, but do vividly remember asking him, while he was stitching me back together, if he was good at sewing curtains too!!!! Gotta love the g&a..

But seriously, I'm a bit Shock at the stories of ladies not being warned in advance, but unfortunately does follow the pattern of xhildbirth being something of a conveyor belt affair!

katieks · 01/12/2013 21:09

I had it done without warning. Complained afterwards to the hospital and told it would have been warned about and it's not usual practise to document it. Um, well I was there and maybe there was a vague 'The doctor is going to check if you need stitches'. That just doesn't cut it and I was NOT expecting a finger up the bum, only a look/feel in vagina.

I still intend to track down the doctor who it was and report her to GMC as her attitude made it quite clear that there were a hundred other places she'd rather be than stitching me and she did not even talk to me at all, only the midwife did.

Idespair · 01/12/2013 21:11

Got a finger up the bum after one of mine. I was told just beforehand though.

CoconutRing · 01/12/2013 21:26

I feel that you shouldn't be "told" that you are having someone's finger up your bum - you should have the reason why fully explained to you. Your full and informed consent should be obtained before anyone attempts an examination. An intimate examination under any other circumstances is assault.

BurnThisDiscoDown · 01/12/2013 21:27

I had this, the lovely midwife warned me though and told me it was to make sure there was no tear between the vaginal and rectal walls. It wasn't pleasant, but probably less unpleasant than pushing a baby out of my fanjo! Grin

MrsCakesPremonition · 01/12/2013 21:30

It is probably also less unpleasant than discovering you have a tear or stitches in the wrong place at a later stage.

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 21:32

I agree CoconutRing, as a midwife I always explain what procedure I'd like to do, the rational for it and request consent. I have had women decline and I respect there decision.
This goes for procedures such as taking routine observations (BP/ Pulse etc), abdominal palpating, vaginal examinations and rectal examinations. No one examination is more important than the other in terms of consent and it does concern and worry me that failure to seek consent isso mainstream.

Meglet · 01/12/2013 21:36

I had this for the morphine suppository after my cs's. They mentioned it first.

Being an unhinged control freak I later double checked and asked them if they'd done it, totally forgetting that of course they did but I wasn't able to feel anything navel down at the time .

ChunkyPickle · 01/12/2013 21:46

First CS they did it but didn't tell me - queue freaking out when I did my first poo and was wondering what the hell all the white stuff was - at which point they explained.

Second CS they did warn me first, and really went on about it even though I said fine, yes please, no really it's what I want, CAN WE STOP TALKING ABOUT IT NOW.

Couldn't feel either time of course.. and wish I'd.. err.. held onto it longer both times because you really notice the pain killer wearing off once it's been expelled!

ZenNudist · 01/12/2013 21:52
