3 natural births, no stitches with either, no finger surprises either

CatchesTheNightTrain · 01/12/2013 21:54

Hideous tears are very very rare, please don't worry!

If it's any consolation I'm also pregnant and share all the same worries.

Good luck in January, I'll be following you in Feb :-)

TBH I think in the UK they are not nearly fussy enough about checking our bits and reinstating something like normality down below. I ended up being rebuilt by a surgeon due to not being dealt with properly after Birth No 1. However he did a lovely job and I now have a lady garden even nicer than Sharon Osborne's (not hard, I imagine).

thereinmadnesslies · 01/12/2013 21:58

God I had this - I had a trainee midwife stitch up my second degree tear (would not recommend this, her hands were shaking). She did the stitches too deep so then a consultant had to come, undo the trainees stitches then restitch properly. And the local anesthetic wore off midway through and they said I couldn't have any more. So it hurt. Lots.

It took me months to get over the whole experience, to the point that I had it in writing from the head midwife at the hospital that if I tore with DS2 I could have the repair under general anesthetic.

beachesandbuckets · 01/12/2013 22:02

ENOUGH of the lols please OP, driving me NUTs on this and other posts!

stickysausages · 01/12/2013 22:03

Didn't have it with a vaginal birth, but did have it during medical management of miscarriages... hubby was amused as he'd actually read the leaflets & knew what would happen... was surprising to say the !

WaitingForMe · 01/12/2013 22:24

I can't imagine it being that way if men were going through it BoffinMum.

Quite aside from aesthetics, the risk of infection and continence issues surely make this aspect of birth really important. Even to be callous and talk money, isn't it better to do it right the first time? Although I fear we're heading into embarrassing bodies territory and too many women live with problems.

CherryLips1980 · 02/12/2013 06:54

I had the finger up bum too (2nd degree tear) but it was explained to me. DP said my face was a picture when he told me what he was about to do.

I kept hold if the gas and air for it and pretended it wasn't happening.

oopsadaisyme · 02/12/2013 16:55

beaches so ignore me, it's a 'lol', hardly worth getting upset about, chill??

I'd give you my phone for a day, luckily, got alot of 'Lol-ing' friends also -

Isn't 'Lol' in the new english dictionary now --???

Haha I had this. She was checking my stitches :)

BraveLilBear · 03/12/2013 04:09

This thread is making me feel quite ill - not because of the finger up bum prospect but because of the disgraceful lack of dignity/respect being apparently widely exhibited. It's genuinely disgusting and appalling behaviour.

As for me, I was in theatre under a spinal. I didn't have a clue what was going on. However, they offered me a suppository painkiller. I said yes. They then offered it again because they'd forgotten to put it in. I was grateful for their respect when I was already in such a vulnerable position (and could feel literally nothing).

Sunnysummer · 03/12/2013 04:31

If it was a surprise then you should definitely complain, as they should never be doing checks or pessaries without talking to you first.

(And for all the terrified FTMs reading this, firstly it is certainly not standard to need to do at all and secondly, during and after the birth it's astonishing how little you care about things that sound incredibly undignified beforehand!) Smile

ElleCloughie · 03/12/2013 23:22

Also twice, once for painkillers and once to check for damage after stitches. Really didn't care at that point, just so pleased they had finished my horrible stitches and that I could finally move back into a position so I could get my baby in my arms again!

ElleCloughie · 03/12/2013 23:23

Also, it was explained to me, and they sought my consent before they did anything.

Rosieliveson · 04/12/2013 00:51

Definitely had a big old painkiller popped up my bum after my DS

NickysMam · 06/12/2013 17:57

I had the finger in my bum with DS. hurt like hell I literally yelped like a puppy. I can't remember the reason behind it but it was after she stitched me up.

next time I'm telling them no fingers up my bum thanks

Ragusa · 10/12/2013 21:55

I had this with DD and I have to be honest and say for me there are many, many worse things like the actual giving birth bit Finger up bum? Size of a felt tip... not got much on a baby's massive, wedged head coming in the other direction IMO Grin

I do still remember being appalled there was the possibility she could have sown my rectum and vaginal canal together, though....

Ktb86 · 01/03/2015 19:03

This also happened to me, completely took me by surprise. I had already given birth to baby and placenta. I didn't splitter need stitches, my ds is nearly 4 and I've still never met anyone who had this. Does anyone know the reason for this? Confused

HandMini · 01/03/2015 19:09

I'm sure this happened to me after a third degree tear repair job but I was so woozy on painkillers and huge epidural top up that I didn't notice.

Agree with the pp who said not enough is done in the uk to check women's vaginas and bums post birth.

nottheOP · 01/03/2015 19:13

3rd degree tear here but had more than one finger up my bum, without any pain relief, when they were trying to decipher if I needed surgery. It was by far the most painful bit of labour and utterly mortifying.

Georgethesecond · 01/03/2015 19:15

I was so very impressed by my Voltarol suppository first time round I actually requested one second time! After a long pushing stage and a nasty tear on only gas and air I felt as though I had been hit by a truck. They gave me the suppository after the repair work (for which I needs a spinal). Bloody marvellous! Wiped away all the pain.

hideandseekpig · 01/03/2015 19:16

I had this to check my stitches was a fairly new midwife that did my stitches not sure if that made a difference. She did tell me what she was going to do and as unpleasant as it was after childbirth I didn't really care! I could also see my dd being held by my dh and so I didn't care what what was happening to me really Smile

Rhianna1980 · 01/03/2015 19:16

I wouldn't have ever known that my midwife put anything up my bum if she hadn't told me. I wasn't bothered to be honest as every tom dick n Harry had examined me to that point ( I think I'm the shyest person on earth) and I was planning to ask her to give me one anyway. I didn't feel a thing and I wasn't under an epidural either. The main thing is a happy and healthy baby and mother. GrinSmile

Rinkydinkypink · 01/03/2015 19:21

Yes I had this twice. Both dc was stitched back together. Both had pessary pain relief. Both times hurt.

Was warned both times but by the time the warning was said the deed had been done.

I didn't care on either occasion. I felt ruined anyway!

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/03/2015 19:24

Yes. I had it both times. Two 10lbers. Lots of stitches. No warning at all first time. I was on gas and air at the time whilst my stitches were being done. Gas and air (for me) was a bit like truth serum in "Meet the Parents". I believe my exact words to the midwife were "What the FUCK are you doing??? NO ONE puts anything up there. That is an exit hole ONLY" Shock

It was by far the most undignified bit of the whole shebang (and I speak as someone who did actually shit herself during childbirth) Confused
