How did your waters break?

Because I'm not sure if mine have I heard a definite pop last night in bed, and have been losing small amounts of fluid from somewhere ever since. Whilst leaning forward this morning, I had a big gush (wet my knickers and trousers - sorry if TMI!), which I'm sure wasn't wee (went to the toilet afterwards and still needed a wee).

My waters were broken in labour with ds, and there was seemingly litres of them, so I don't really know what to expect! 39+5w pg and head is engaged - would this mean I wouldn't get the big gush?

with dd mine went with a pop then a gush. put a pad in, if its pale pink liquid, i'd say your waters def gone, ring your midwife. waters can go and there just be a trickle, more will come out as both you and the baby move around.

alicemama · 26/06/2006 10:45

with dd1, my waters broke 2 days before I actually went into labour. I didn't have a big gush, just a constant trickle for what felt like hrs.
with dd2 they popped just before she was delivered and there was a huge gush then.

Sounds to me as if they've gone, ring up the mat unit and see ehat they say. If you go in they'll be able to tell you if they've gone.

LilacWine · 26/06/2006 10:48

mine went during labour, at 7cm. i felt a trickle and asked DP if they had gone. the midwife then broke them properly.

i'd ring your midwife!

Laura032004 · 26/06/2006 10:49

Should they be pink then? They looked clear (on white pants). Have left a msg for my MW, so I'll see what she says. I'm booked for a home birth, so fingers crossed labour should start soon

Mine were fairly clear!

fingers crossed for your home birth

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 26/06/2006 10:50

sounds to me like they've gone. mine broke ahead of labour and it was a fairly constant trickle (for 2 days!) very little gushing. very watery, (but not quite as watery as wee, if taht makes sense) slightly whitish. afaik you can get a small hole/tear in teh sac which means they dribble rather than gush. I'd get on eth phone to your mw

alexsmum · 26/06/2006 10:51

mine went with a bang and a gush while i was pushing the dss' out.5 mins later they were born.
it does sound like your waters have gone-def ring your midwife.i also read a tip once that said (if i remember rightly) that if you put some of the liquid on glass and leave it to dry and it makes a fern pattern then it's your waters!

hitchcock · 26/06/2006 10:53

my went with a big gush no trickle for me was like the horror stories you hear but mine was at home thank god! does sound like yours have gone good luck XXXX

BettySpaghetti · 26/06/2006 10:55

With both of mine they went whilst I was in bed -I woke up and then a split second later -GUSH !!

They then continued to trickle every time I moved. I didn't have contractions at the time (they came later) but both times when I phoned the midwife they called me in to be checked.

poppiesinaline · 26/06/2006 11:02

sorry, cant help. With all three of mine, my waters were broken for me at 10 cm when I was ready to push

AdelaideS · 26/06/2006 11:10

Ooooh, Laura....Good Luck

staceym11 · 26/06/2006 11:13

mine were broken in labour (twice!) so no experience, but sounds like yours have definately gone! good luck!

jamsambam · 26/06/2006 11:14

you can definatly get a big gush even ifthe head is engaged..i can remember having a tidal wave even after i had leaked for a few hours.im assuming you have called your midwife or who ever you are having to help by now..good luck...

Munz · 26/06/2006 11:14

ooh mine went at 9am and established labour was at 2pm the same day - fingers crossed for u, think it was nemo who told e that if it's ur waters within an hour any pad u put in is soaked thru. mine were clear, I had absolutly no bleeding until I was 2CM then it was like a really heavy period.

good luck hon.

Munz · 26/06/2006 11:15

(ooh and mine were ahem felt like my pelvic floor had colapsed! lol - thought it was a pee pee but like u still needed to go) I didn't htink my pelvic floor was that bad!

Jasnem · 26/06/2006 11:15

Sounds like it to me.
With dd1 they went in a flood, but with ds I had leaking every time I moved from the early hours. He was born that afternoon.
Hope you don't have to wait too long, and good luck with the home birth.

tessasmum · 26/06/2006 11:23

Definately sounds like it.
Both mine went as a trickle that kept on coming. Labour didn't start for nearly 24hrs afterwards with DD (and the threat of induction) Mild contractions started about 5-6 hours afterwards with DS and I went on to have a fabulous homebirth, hope you get the same.
Good Luck

bozzy · 26/06/2006 12:16

My waters broke as I leaned over the dishwasher to get a cup out for DS. There was a POP and then a small gush (was 10 days late so wearing a pad) - an hour and a half later I had a baby daughter at home!

bozzy · 26/06/2006 12:17

What I meant to say is that it sounds as though they have definately broken. I called the midwife and she said that if contractions didn't start in the next few hours I may need to get checked out with hospital in case there was a risk of infection.... home birth was planned so reluctant to have to go into hospital for check up.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 26/06/2006 12:41

bozzy - I was allowed to go 48 hours after my waters broke without induction - quite unusual, but it might be worth asking, if the idea of induction doesn;t appeal. I had to take my own temperature very few hours to check for signs of infection. I ran around trying everything I could think of to kick start labour. I don't have much faith in such things but I went and had my feet prodded by a reflexologist and I also tried blue/black cohosh (but DOUBLE check which is the right one). No idea if they worked or not, but I did go into labour without induction and had a good homebirth

hunkermunker · 26/06/2006 12:43

With DS1 they went while I was asleep - bit of a trickle that didn't stop.

With DS2 they were intact till 15 minutes before he was born, then they went with a pop all over the floor in the delivery room. I couldn't apologise enough, I seem to recall

LittleB · 26/06/2006 12:46

Mine went with a trickle, wasn't sure they'd gone. I went in to hospital and they used a testing stick to see if my waters had gone, they had, but as I was only having mild spread out contractions and wasn't in labour I came home, with thermometer strips to take my temperature every four hours to check for infection. I would think you could do this too. They were fine for me to come home. THey did have to induce me in the end to speed things up as not much was still happening three days later, and they don't like you to go over 4 days. I'd go in, get it checked, get some thermometer strips to keep an eye on it and hopefully you'll go into labour soon.

Misspiggy · 26/06/2006 12:48

When mine went with DS2 it was more of a trickle than a gush and the contractions started pretty soon afterwards. The midwife at the hospital took the pad I was wearing and did a test to check that it was definitely my waters that had broken so if you're not sure they can always check. Good luck!

Misspiggy · 26/06/2006 12:49

Oops LittleB....cross posted, sorry!

pol26 · 26/06/2006 14:20

Mine were broken in labour when I was 7cm... after that it took me 1.5 hours to dilate an extra three cm and push DD out....

I would guess that yours have broken!
