How did your waters break?

Because I'm not sure if mine have I heard a definite pop last night in bed, and have been losing small amounts of fluid from somewhere ever since. Whilst leaning forward this morning, I had a big gush (wet my knickers and trousers - sorry if TMI!), which I'm sure wasn't wee (went to the toilet afterwards and still needed a wee).

My waters were broken in labour with ds, and there was seemingly litres of them, so I don't really know what to expect! 39+5w pg and head is engaged - would this mean I wouldn't get the big gush?

Mine went in the kind of hideous great gush that the midwives assure you only happens on TV!!!

Lucky I was at home, felt a pop got out of bed and.......... not the greatest time to have bare floorboards!!

Lornatoo · 29/06/2006 08:26

Good Luck! I couldn't resist posting, I normally just lurk!
Mine burst with a big Gush in Marks & Spencers Ladies!!
Felt as if I was going to have an accident and I made it into the privacy of the ladies just in time. All very embarressing!

gladbag · 29/06/2006 08:31

Oooh! Lornatoo, did you get the vouchers, or is that just an urban myth (you know the one I mean, waters going in Tesco's, John Lewis, M&S etc and they give you vouchers in celebration)?

Lornatoo · 29/06/2006 08:41

I got a visit in hospital by the store manager (even more embarresing!)and a beautiful layette.
White blanket, outfit, bib, hat etc.MASSIVE bouquet too.
They were lovely.
This happened with my ds1 6 years ago, I still pop in to say hello to the staff and first aider!!!

jamsambam · 29/06/2006 08:47

my sister worked in m&s once when a lady went into full labour in the middle of the knicker section, they gave her £100 of vouchers and sent food and flowers to her house for when she came home, i think they felt a bit guilty for making her go to hospital in a taxi!!

Laura032004 · 29/06/2006 09:22

So do you reckon it's worth me going to M&S with a bag of water to 'pop' at an opportune moment! !!!

Not much happening here. Had the reflexology, a curry, have eaten a pineapple and several pounds of grapes. Have even taken some raspberry leaf tablets. Got a good nights sleep last night though - had mild contractions for the previous three nights, so was nice to wake up feeling rested.

Might ask the MW to do a sweep today - said I wouldn't have one this pg, but otherwise it will be induction tomorrow night Hoping they can't fit me in until Monday though.

Oh No, I had an Ambulance, just to add to it all. Would much have prefered a taxi!
Go for it Laura, you never know the excitement of it all might bring on your labour!!
Good luck, thinking of you.

my first waters went when i work up at 4.15, had a show when i was examined by mw, he was out by 07.45, (12 days late) my second was 4 weeks early, no waters breaking at all and was out in 1hr and 27mins - in the bag! (with a caul)

MrsSid · 29/06/2006 17:03

With ds my waters broke an hour after I had my "show", and just as contractions were starting. They were tinged slightly pink, and just trickled out over the hours. However, with dd, my waters didn't break until I was pushing, and she appeared about 5 mins after they burst.

alibag · 29/06/2006 17:33

Laura you're still waiting?! I read this thread on Monday never thought you'd be here till Thursday! My waters broke with a trickle (woke up in middle of the night thinking I'd wet myself!), contractions erratic, went to hospital 36 hours later and was induced all day long. In fact MW did the knitting needle trick (because waters had not completely broken), which allowed contractions to regularise. I would try a sweep before induction - very tedious being strapped up on the hospital bed all day and I'm sure all those drugs had a big effect on me after the birth....
2nd time similar: trickle started while I was standing ironing (a rare moment) but everything progresed much more quickly & DS2 arrived 5 hrs later!
Best of luck!

Nathanmum · 29/06/2006 17:36

So... was it your water breaking?!! Hope all went well. Mine went with a huge POP & there was a flood, then I started contracting every 2 minutes straight away - nice!

Laura032004 · 29/06/2006 18:21

Yes, my waters have broken, but they think it's the hind ones rather than the fore ones. Need to read up on the difference. I'm still tricking away, which feels horrid!

I had to go up to the Day Assessment Unit today, where they did a CTG, which showed that the baby is still quite happy. I'm going to go and have a scan for liquor volume sometime tomorrow. They wouldn't do a sweep due to the risk of infection. They did some blood tests though to check that I'm not harbouring any nasties. I think if they come back clear tomorrow, and the scan and CTG go OK again tomorrow, I might leave things over the w/e and see how I go. This baby has to come sometime!!!

Good luck then - at least you know the baby's ok, even if you get to feel like a waterfall!!!

mummy23 · 29/06/2006 19:14

I had a sweep with ds2 after my waters had broke and they didn't inform me about any infections (luckily ds2 was ok)
Best of luck for tomorrow, and i'm sure your little bundle of joy will arrive when s/he is ready!(let us know how you get on if you dont go into labour before

nicnack2 · 29/06/2006 19:18

ds1 in labour

ds2 was a query hind water break that sealed up mw did sweep and ds2 born later that day. up here yhey give you 24 hours of leaking then induce if nothing has happened

hitchcock · 29/06/2006 19:55

good luck my love will be thinking of you the end is near!!!!!

alicemama · 29/06/2006 20:00

Oh Laura you must be getting a bit fed up of it by now, I remember I was when my waters went & didn't go into labour for days.

Go get yourself a big bar of choc and sit down with a nice dvd [[[[[[[[hugs]]]]]]]]

alicemama · 29/06/2006 20:00

forgot, how was the reflexololgy?

zamed · 30/06/2006 10:34

My waters only went naturally with my first - in the middle of a handover meeting in the staff-room actually. And in a gush, not a trickle. I somehow managed to remain quite calm - it was everyone else who ran around like headless chickens! I went home, got a shower, did some reading on how long it was likely for contractions to start and then sat down for a snack...only for the hospital to ring (I'd rung to check with them what I needed to do as I had no contractions initially) to tell me to get a move on. My first daughter was born 7 hours after my waters went, and with only 4 hours of contractions! Wish all my births had been as quick and straight forward!

aliparker · 01/07/2006 09:28

My waters broke with a massive gush 22 hours after my contractions started. My little boy was born 10 minutes later!!!!

bodenbetty · 03/07/2006 21:05

can i just resuureect this thread to ask how you knew it was your waters & not just discharge? sorry if this is toomuch info but in this hot weather i 'm feeling constantly damp down below. I've put a pant liner in, which feels damp rather than wet if that makes sense. I'm due to ahve a section on weds mornig so don't want to make even more of a nuisance of myself but am also worreid thatI might miss the signs.
the mw said i would know even if it was only a tricklw so I feel quite stupid for not knowning. is it a trickle that goes on & on or what?

zamed · 04/07/2006 09:38

If they go all at once - you WILL know. If they don't, it's like a continuous trickle...and it doesn't smell (like it might if you'd weed!)...but they might not even go.
I can remember being in a bit of a panic before my first, and my consultant gave me some excellent advice - there's no point worrying now because there's nothing happening and nothing TO worry about, and when things do start to happen, you be much too busy to worry anyway! so enjoy the last days/weeks of being pregnant - I really did miss it once my babes were born (well, some of it anyway!)

jamsambam · 04/07/2006 09:41

if you , in tis heat, really feel its just not normal, tell the midwife, or the cs team, whichever comes first...if they have gone its no big deal..just the start of soemthing!!
