Are boys generally heavier at birth than girls

I've had two girls and they were 6.7 and 6.1. Everyone's warning me that because I have a boy he will be bigger. Is this crap or is it true? I'm 35 + 4 and need to think about getting some blue baby grows rather than pink (although do have white so not desperately worried). Its just that if I were expecting a 6 pounder again I would be buying Tiny baby but if its gonna be bigger..... So if you have both boys and girls in your family were the boys bigger babies and by how much?

Mine were pretty much the same at around 3 kg , just under 7lbs, with about an oz in it , and dd was slightly heavier at birth than ds, but about a week later.

Dd1 born at 38 weeks 6lb 8oz
Dd2 born at 34 weeks 4lb 14oz
Ds born at 37 weeks 5lb 14oz

Bozza · 20/04/2006 11:46

DS - 9lb 10oz
DD - 8lb 12oz

Both fitted easily into newborn size. If you have got some white I wouldn't bother buying anything more. When I had DD I bought one pack of vests and one pack of sleepsuits - £5 from Asda and I was sorted...

Bozza · 20/04/2006 11:47

Both mine were near enough on time - DS 1 day late, DD 1 day early.

Kelly1978 · 20/04/2006 11:47

on average I think boys are supposed to be 3oz bigger. I don't think you can really plan though. My ds1 was 1lb7oz heavier than his sister at 9lb7.

Jasnem · 20/04/2006 11:48

I have dd1 - 8lb 2 oz on due date,
dd28lb 7oz 5 days late
ds 6lb 13 oz 8days late.

Apparently boys are approx. 100g (3.5oz) heavier than girls at birth on average.

My ds was 7lb9 and dd was 6lb3, so in my experience boys are bigger. Saying that though, I am 38 wks pg with another dd and midwife estimates she will be about 9lb! So we'll have to wait and see.

oliveoil · 20/04/2006 11:52

no idea on boys but my girls (both 2 weeks late) were:

dd1 9lb 10
dd2 9lb 5

I had newborn stuff that didn't fit as it only went up to 9.5 lbs, all unworn grrrrr.

PeachyClair · 20/04/2006 12:06

my three boys:

ds1- 2 . 5 weeks early (induction)- 5lb 5 oz
ds2- 1 week early- 6 lb 11.5 oz
ds3- 1 week over- 7 lbs 4 oz

Bozza · 20/04/2006 12:16

Really olive? It fitted my DS perfectly despite the size on the label. I ran out and put him in a 0-3 sleepsuit and his legs only came down to the knees - was in the early days when they are all still curled up.

coppertop · 20/04/2006 12:38

Dd was the smallest of the three:

Ds1 - 9lbs 8oz (9 days late)

Ds2 - 9lbs (2 weeks early)

Dd - 8lbs 4oz (3 days early)

PiccadillyCircus · 20/04/2006 12:39

DS was 6lb 1oz (11 days early)
DD was 7lb 11oz (4 days late)

Wills · 20/04/2006 13:04

OK, there is a slight tendency therefore to have a heavier boy. How fascinating. Will pack the newborn baby grows rather than the tiny baby ones.

DS1 (10 days late) 7lb 14
DD (5 days late) 7lb 12
DS2 (4 days early) 9lb! where did that come from?
And yes, acc the charts, boys are heavier; ds1 and dd both right on the 50th centile.

Wills · 20/04/2006 13:19

This little one was heavy at the 20 week scan and I was amazed and have wondered since then if I'm not more advanced in pregnancy than originally thought.... But obviously not. Grin

a friend of mine had 2 boys who weighed around the 6 or 7 lbs mark (38 weeks) then had a 9lb 8oz whopper (over 40 weeks) Smile

eidsvold · 20/04/2006 13:49

no idea but my dd2 was 9lb 7oz and when we compare her with baby announcements that a big babe.... very few top her at times.

Wills · 20/04/2006 14:06

Oh bundle NOOOOOO. Mind you its not the weight that's important! Everyone thinks its the baby's weight - its not TRUST ME. Its the head circumfrance (sp?). Both my dd's were 6 pounders, dd2 was on the fourth centile. BUT both their heads were above the 90th centiles. It will be weird having a big baby though after my two little ones but if he has a smaller head I will be very grateful! Grin

ds (2 weeks early) 6lb5oz
dd (5 days late) 8lb10oz

hoxtonchick · 20/04/2006 14:09

ds 7lbs10 at 39 weeks
dd 6lbs11 at 38 weeks.

good luck wills!

beckybrastraps · 20/04/2006 14:12

Not much in it, but dd was the biggest:
ds 9lb 7oz
dd 9lb 10oz

beckybrastraps · 20/04/2006 14:13

I may well stop at two...

Bozza · 20/04/2006 14:14

What makes you so sure that you will be having a big baby? My DD was predicted at over 10 lbs but fortunately came in at 8lb 12. Agree about head size, mind you, DS is 5 and wears an age 8-10 hat and DD is 1 and wears and age 3-6 hat.....
