I'm booked in for an induction this friday, first baby, and no idea really what to expect. In an ideal world, going in with an open mind is preferable. But in practice I'm probably going to be prone to losing it Blush

I'm currently 37 weeks, but measuring 41 weeks with Polyhydramnios, large baby with enlarged abdomen, plus being back to back Hmm

So, what should I expect? What was your experience?

Be honest, I can take it Confused

Hope it's going well and you're not too uncomfortable. That passage can really sting!! Hope you managed to get some sleep too??!

ButtonBoo · 24/06/2012 07:13

Passage??! Meant pessary!!! Freudian slip??!! LOL!

chullah · 24/06/2012 07:17

I found that the pessary was more of a delaying tactic for the nurses due to lack of beds - I had 1 and had it removed 12 hours later but then didn't start commence with the drip until the following day.

Mind you, made up for lost time - 5 hours (had one if those heads onWink)

ButtonBoo · 24/06/2012 07:19

The pessary didn't work for me either but I think they prefer to start you off gently. The drip (syntocin) is pretty full on and the forced contractions can be really really strong. Id get an epi if they are going to do syntocin!

McPhee · 24/06/2012 07:32

Well its not started anything off. I had some tigtenings last night, when I was on the monitor, but nothing since. Lovely lady just brought me a coffee. I'd kill for an egg mcmuffin though ;-).

I think the plan is to give me another pessary, then there was talk of breaking waters in theatre because of me being high risk.

I've never felt so keen to be in pain before. Let's get this party started folks!!!

Doubt if they'll give you another pessary. With me they took it out after 24 hrs and 'rested' me for another 24 hrs. Then they started with 3 doses of gel, 8 hrs apart. 3 is the max they can give.

My cons. asked me to have an epi put in to break my waters as my cervix was really high and they thought it'd be too painful to ARM. Glad I agreed (originally wanted natural birth!!) as the syntocin was hardcore. My epi was one that needed constant top ups and if it wore off before the top up was given, boy...those contractions were powerful!

TRY to get some zzzz when you can. Won't be long before you'll be a sleep deprived new mummy!!!

ps thinking...is there going to be a Nanny McPhee?!!! LOL!

ButtonBoo · 24/06/2012 07:56

Sorry if some of my posts sound neg. Just want you to know I've been there too so know how tough it can be.

pingulingo · 24/06/2012 07:57

Good luck McPhee! Am sure you will not have too long to wait - and even if it does take a little while to get going, you will look back and think of it as a blur! My induction took a couple of days, but looking back it really doesnt feel it was that long, and I am sure you will be quicker if you have already had some tightenings, which is more than I got!!

lambethlil · 24/06/2012 08:07

Very good Luck! I was induced all three timesShock

It was fine, pessaries ripened everything up and each time, once they broke the waters the babies literally flew out. And I mean literally, in moments. By the last time DH and I were a bit Hmm at the MW's surprise, no time for gloves.

I'm sure the party's started, and you'll have a lovely baby by tea time.

McPhee · 24/06/2012 08:25

It is all a bit surreal. I was just sat here looking out the window, and I suddenly thought, the next time I step out there I'll be a mummy. I really hope somethings happened by the time I'm examined next.

The. Midwife last night said my waters would be broken in theatre. Don't know when though.

Exciting. Hopefully the second pessary will do more.

Keep Calm and Keep Having That Baby. Thanks

debka · 24/06/2012 10:06

Still here thinking of you! It took 2 pessaries to get me going each time. Good luck xxx

ThePinkPussycat · 24/06/2012 10:32

Good wishes from me too. Brew if you can get one! The first cup of tea after giving birth....aaaah!

McPhee · 24/06/2012 10:34

A few tightenings but that's it.

Nearly finished on monitor, then off for a walk.
