I'm booked in for an induction this friday, first baby, and no idea really what to expect. In an ideal world, going in with an open mind is preferable. But in practice I'm probably going to be prone to losing it Blush

I'm currently 37 weeks, but measuring 41 weeks with Polyhydramnios, large baby with enlarged abdomen, plus being back to back Hmm

So, what should I expect? What was your experience?

Be honest, I can take it Confused

Good luck for tomorrow mcPhee!

Completely understand how you are feeling - I had terrible pregnancy sickness plus Obstetric Cholastasis from week 31. Was petrified of labour but at the same time desperate for the pregnancy to be over so all the itching, sickness and fatigue would disappear!

You will feel so much better once you have baby in your arms!

McPhee · 21/06/2012 14:09

Just as I thought, the pain is late onset SPD Hmm Well just thank goodness my time is nearly up.

Midwife wasn't keen to sweep me, she reckoned I should get a good bit of rest before tomorrow instead.

So here I am, in bed, just about to do just that.

Hope you do manage to ret mcphee . Have you got the natal hypnosis prep for birth CDs by any chance or something similar? That might help calm you ready for tomorrow. I downloaded free meditation podcasts to help me relax when pg - they really helped. I think they [the people who made them] were called 'meditation oasis' - give it a go. Not long now, please keep us updated.

I had a failed induction, so sorry if this is not as positive as you would like. Prostin at 11am sunday, had the 24 hour pessary. Went out for lunch but had to stay in overnight. By 11 am monday was 2cm and just about viable for waters breaking. But the labour ward was full so we had to wait. At 10pm i fought to go home and be back at 8am the next day. Very glad of a night in my own bed!
Waters eventually broken around 11am and sent to walk around outside to get things going.
By 4pm nothing much was happening and I agreed to the drip. The drip starts out set to 3 and gets increased gradually depending on how much you respond. Pain and contractions came quickly and intensly but it took me 12 hours to get to active labour. At about 4am i was finally 6cm but it all slowed down again. By this time, i was in agony, we didn't know the baby was back to back (though she was) but the pain felt fairly constant.

I ended up on an epidural as the pain was strong and i couldn't move because of the monitor.
By 10am i was at 8cm but then it all slowed down. I didn't realise though because the pain got worse again. By noon nothing much had changed, she was back to back with her head stuck and i was just 8 cm, so we finally agreed to c section. They had been trying to get me to agree to a section since the middle of the night but i was in too much pain to think straight, just knew i didn't want a c section. Anyway from agreeing to the baby being born was about 30 mins flat. Beautiful baby girl born at 1.05pm on the wednesday.

My boyfriend was with me throughout.

I would say definitely read up on the what if scenarios, i'd had such an easy pregnancy i'd only skim read the worst case parts of the books so felt a bit out of my depth but the midwives and obsteatricians were amazing so it was much less scary than you might think. Also, it all took so long, there wasn't much sense of panic really.

Good luck and just keep your mind on the prize at the end, it's worth it.

Will be thinking about you tomorrow and sending positive thoughts and well wishes your way. Before you know it your beautiful baby will be here. Xxx

ButtonBoo · 21/06/2012 20:02

Will be thinking of you McPhee.... x

CockyPants · 21/06/2012 22:28

Ask for a cesarean. Chances are once intervention starts, it escalates and that's what you often end up having.CS not as bad as you think it will be.
I wasn't too posh to push, dd went into distress and cs done under GA to save her life.

MrsLowe · 21/06/2012 22:55

Hope it all goes well my love, just expect the unexpected and you will be just fine! Every time is different for everyone and each baby. Just keep going and you'll get the best reward ever at the end.

McPhee · 22/06/2012 05:07

Am crapping myself now. Scared shitless infact

Major emotional breakdown lastnight. Poor mum and DP Blush, but I think I just needed to get it out of my system. I reckon I've managed about 4 hours of broken sleep Hmm

So today is the day......we at least get on the right road to meeting our baby Smile

Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories, and offered their support. I love MN. I'll do my best to update as and when I can, signal allowing.

Oh and DP is snoring......I want to kick him.

I clicked on this because I thought you were discussing induction hobs.

MrsHoarder · 22/06/2012 05:26

(((((McPhee))))) It won't be as bad as you think. Remember you will be focusing on all of the worst aspects of the MN collective. So focus on the baby, don't be afraid to ask for pain relief. take a good book or even better a series of podcasts to give you something to focus on in the long wait and prelabour stages. DH measured the gap between my contractions in book pages for a whole day (I was sleeping between them, don't ask how).

Remember that the medical staff generally know what they are doing and want the same outcome as you: a healthy baby and mum, but they don't know you and your specific needs, that's what your DP is for.

reastie · 22/06/2012 05:48

zhaghzhagh Grin

mcphee xx good luck and thinking of you lots today. I'll be checking how you're doing.

Somersaults · 22/06/2012 08:42

I'm so excited for you. I know it's horrible and nervewracking but you're so close now to the most amazing thing. Think how proud of yourself you'll.be shortly when you're holding your gorgeous baby. Not long now. Good luck :)

McPhee · 22/06/2012 09:59

Well I'm totally fed up now

Ward is back logged so might not be until overnight or tomorrow Sad

They'll ring me.

Going back to bed for a good cry.

OP posts:
ButtonBoo · 22/06/2012 10:22

Oh no! Go home and allow yourself to have a good cry. Then do something nice today, nice lunch, warm bath, movie etc to try to take your mind off things if possible. Better if your home than waiting and waiting for hours in hosp. x

PandaSpaniel · 22/06/2012 14:04

What buttonboo said. Don't worry its worth the wait xx

Windandsand · 22/06/2012 14:06

Oh dear- this happened to me too. Try to relax and not stress as your baby can feel it. Watch some crap tv, and at he hospital relax and make sure you get the time and explanations you need. Don't let do out of your sight and ensure he is ready to understand all and help make decisions with you. My induction didn't work and this midwives got a bit short with me - if they want to break your waters it should not hurt and you can ask for gas whilst they do it. Also for when they give you prostin. You are not being a nuisance ever if you struggle, and make sure do gets shirty if anyone makes you feel like you are on a conveyer belt. If you end up with a CS, make sure you and do know what might happen. This waiting is horrid for you, but worth it in the end!

ButtonBoo · 22/06/2012 21:28

Hope no update from you for a while means either you're having a lovely sleep or...you've been called back in!!! Hope to wake up to some good news...

McPhee · 23/06/2012 05:04

Sadly no change. I've been trying to get as much rest as possible.

Just trying this on my phone to see if it works.

Hopefully they'll have space in the morning, fingers crossed.

OP posts:
MrClaypole · 23/06/2012 05:33

Sending good birthing vibes to you today McPhee. I hope they find a space for you on the ward.

PoppyWearer · 23/06/2012 05:35

Good luck McPhee!

McPhee · 23/06/2012 06:06

cheers.

I may have to start a sit in if they don't take me in today. I was so upset yesterday, I can't go through that again. I'd got mentally prepared and everything :-(

OP posts:
ButtonBoo · 23/06/2012 07:50

Know that feeling McPhee. My induction started Monday and didn't have DD til Sunday :-(. I just didn't dilate. But I think mine was quite an extreme case and even the lead O&G consultant got involved with my case!!! I kept thinking 'ok, it's going to be today' but little miss here had other ideas.

Once they start you off, you know you're on your way and they won't be sending you home!!! Will be thinking of you...

McPhee · 23/06/2012 09:22

Finally going in this morning! Just need to wait to be called with an actual time.

Oh thank goodness.....am feeling relatively calm at the moment. That of course is subject to change with no prior warning ;-)
